@@AVAPopCultureright... and this one used digital tools to mimic that look. So what is your actual point? Are you trying to say the delivery medium of 4KUHD somehow alters digitally produced content in a negative way? That's a super hot take, and likely misguided. The medium is just a container. Outside of a bad compression job it shouldn't really do much. With the major caveat of the color space and dynamic range of the source. What is the DI of this film? How was it packed for DCP? Because if it was 4K, HDR, BT.2020 then it's not the problem of UHD being bad, it's the fact that Cineverse chose to give us a reduced quality product.

I ordered from Umbrella as well. But ordered all 3 individual releases. Haven't heard anything from them yet about shipping. Might be a while before they get to my order since I didn't order right away.
I watched this on 4K last night. It looked great. Many are saying there is no HDR on this. I have seen specs that say there is, but people are saying its only playing in SDR. Are the online specs for the U.S standard release (non steelbook) inaccurate?
The 4k looks great, there is nothing wrong with the quality- that wasn't what I was saying...I'm saying the esthetic and the way they shot and color graded it and the "look" they are going for does not lend itself to 4k... and the US steelbook specs say HDR10 - it is listed on bluray.com as that too
Greetings Programs. Always good to hear your movie making knowledge. Totally agree with the 80s VHS vibe of the Terrifier movies. Love the films and I agree with the potential of Art becoming one of the great horror icons with some subtle changes to how the movie delivers. Thanks again, Chase. 🎉
I get what you’re saying, I felt this way with Blade, I switched to the blu-ray as I felt the asthetic was better and gave me more of that gritty look. I’ll be getting the Umbrella collection in January and thankfully they all include the blu-rays as well, so ill have both options
I placed an order for the steelbook and it got backorder and said it wasn't coming until December 31st,so Tuesday morning I went to the record shop next door to my work and was totally surprised at the lenticular cover and bought it. I wasn't expecting the lenticular cover.
I just bought the HMV Blu-Ray trilogy of Terrifier because of this recommendation. I will get the 4K set later down the line but I'm sure the Blu-Ray is just fine. Thanks 👍🏽.
I agree I returned mine, the noise and grain was way to much, even the trailer has less noise on the image, it’s actually unwatchable on a lg oled tv, and the blu ray is actually better colour, the 4k hdr10 is so over blown it’s not natural. It’s a shame they have ruined the release of this movie
It's not HDR10. It's SDR and BT.709 color space (same as bluray). I have a Sony Master series OLED calibrated by D-Nice at Value Electronics. A90J. Panasonic UB-820 with all settings on pass through/disc direct/etc... it looks wonderful. The grain is nice and gritty looking for the exact grindhouse/70s feel this youtuber is saying the film is missing. I will try and A/B with the bluray. Maybe you're right, but I'd be surprised.
I just found it confusing that you were agreeing with the video. The author is saying his 4K is basically too clean and bright. And you are saying its too grainy. Confusing. I think the appreciation for film grain (fake or not) is an aquired taste. Take it for what it is and eventually youll develop a taste for it! That's what happened to me anyway. Probably 10 years ago. @dan9700

@AVAPopCulture 4k is awesome, but when your going for that old griddy grindhouse, look 4k, and hdr can ruin that look, especially with all the practical effects they use like I was saying if they got rid of the hdr it would help it
Christmas 🎅 gotta love it 🎉 Good to know about Terrifier, I don’t have any of them except on Vudu maybe. Just got a couple from KL, still waiting for Far and Away and Sanctum from Shout
Haven’t checked any of these out yet. As you know, so love atmosphere and vibe. I hadn’t really run into a movie that I thought might have been better on dvd. I notice some like the 4k better. I’m curious if those people grew up in the 80s and 90s with VHS and DVD? Is the visual representation just activating our nostalgia? I like that you’ve added some specs in the corner. It works.
Yeah I know a lot of these guys from a movie we worked on and from them being a part of the film festival I started....they are big time 80s horror fans and they want that vibe and esthetic because of their nostalgia and love of that time period
As much as I agree with your take, I feel like holding back on the gore would be slightly disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I love Art the Clown and want more lore, but the gore is what the fans are expecting, and I think Damien and his team love working on practical effects and how much they can push it further. With a higher budget, I can't wait to see how much creative these kills can get. Also, yeah, this movie isn't for everyone because it's a Splatter Film, not really general horror. A lot of people aren't going to like it, but for the people who do, it's a damn good time. (The people in the comments prove my point. The point is that if you like Terrifier, then keep enjoying it. Thanks for sharing your opinion.)
I know they like working with practical effects...I worked with most of those guys on the movie Penance Lane...I edited the movie they shot and shot the pick ups for it (this was before terrifier) ... if gore is the big draw, it has a shelf life that will burn out like Found footage or torture films and I don't want the character or story to burn out
@AVAPopCulture Some people felt the same way about the Saw franchise, and it now has 10 whole movies dedicated to nothing but traps that are practically torture. To be quiet fair, these movies can thrive with a dedicated fanbase. Art is already popular, and I think we all know that Terrifier 4 has a lot of potential to pass the 100 million mark because of all the hype from the third movie. Art the Clown can definitely become an icon while still living an infamy from his movies. It's all up to Damien to make a good story that people will love aside from the gore. I think Damien needs to balance the gore and story for Art to reach his full potential in mainstream horror, even for those who may be queasy. People may not see his movies, but they'll definitely remember his name and face.
@AVAPopCulture I totally understand your point of view completely, but I think what I meant is the fact that the terrifier series is so gory is what drew people to it so much, to see how over the top it is and to see what everyone was talking about. When I first watched the first terrifier I thought it was going to be crap and turned it off. After hearing people hype it up I decided to give it a second chance and my mind was completely blown and loved it and became a fan.

@subaquaticencountersofthed8515 yeah man I'm totally misguided...have no clue what I'm talking about....good thing I haven't made movies for a couple of decades or something crazy like that...or edited a movie the terrifier production crew shot or something amiright?
Btw 4k is not just a container...
And for the 100th time, I never said the 4k was bad...but if you put a downgrade distressed look on something then make it as detailed as possible, you are defeating the purpose...all you are doing is highlighting purposeful downgrades
Terrifier 3 good horror film 🎥🎞🤡🧑🎄👍
Budget $2 milion
Box office $89.7 milion 🎥🎞🤟
I didnt say it was a bad movie!
3:07 Are you sure there’s HDR on the disc? My player will only play it in SDR, but it plays Terrifier 2 in HDR. I can’t find any mention of HDR on the case either.
yep there is HDR 10 according to the specs and it shows on my my player as HDR10...either way, the point I was making is not about the quality of the 4k because it is fine...
here are the posted specs
Codec: HEVC / H.265
Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)
HDR: HDR10
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1
Kobe, I just picked up the 4K steelbook walmart and other US sources have... No HDR here. Panasonic UB820. SDR/BT.709. I'm not sure what this youtuber is looking at, but all the forums are saying no HDR as well.
@ thank you. I had emailed the disc distributor and they confirmed they had no HDR on this disc due to licensing agreements. Umbrella’s release in Australia will have Dolby Vision, but no HDR here.
@AVAPopCulture it’s already been confirmed that in the United States there is no HDR for any of the Terrifier 3 4k releases. It’s SDR only. With all due respect you should make a correction video as this negates basically your entire video. There is no HDR on this release. I have confirmed with the supplier and with many sources so it’s impossible for highlights to be blown out. It’s SDR only.
to add one more thhing , the bluray com listing is incorrect, it says HDR when there isn't, i have confirmed this as well
I just got the trilogy box set from Umbrella.
Terrifier 2 & 3 have Dolby Vision. I will check when i get home if the hughlights are blown out with DV on.
I ordered from Umbrella as well. But ordered all 3 individual releases. Haven't heard anything from them yet about shipping. Might be a while before they get to my order since I didn't order right away.
VHS days are over AVAPopCulture. The people who shot the film need to realize that in 2024. Young kids doesn't know a VHS is.
I watched this on 4K last night. It looked great. Many are saying there is no HDR on this. I have seen specs that say there is, but people are saying its only playing in SDR. Are the online specs for the U.S standard release (non steelbook) inaccurate?
The 4k looks great, there is nothing wrong with the quality- that wasn't what I was saying...I'm saying the esthetic and the way they shot and color graded it and the "look" they are going for does not lend itself to 4k... and the US steelbook specs say HDR10 - it is listed on bluray.com as that too
It showed as hdr10 on my player
Greetings Programs. Always good to hear your movie making knowledge. Totally agree with the 80s VHS vibe of the Terrifier movies. Love the films and I agree with the potential of Art becoming one of the great horror icons with some subtle changes to how the movie delivers. Thanks again, Chase. 🎉
I get what you’re saying, I felt this way with Blade, I switched to the blu-ray as I felt the asthetic was better and gave me more of that gritty look. I’ll be getting the Umbrella collection in January and thankfully they all include the blu-rays as well, so ill have both options
Rumor has it that you were an executive producer on this movie .
I double dipped got the steelbook and the linticular lol. Thanks for all the info Chase. Really enjoyed the video.
thank you! enjoy it my friend!
@ it is hdr10 in the uk, and it’s horrible, the cinema release was better and clips on RUclips the grain is way to much
@@dan9700 thank you for clarifying you're probably looking at a different disc than I am. Mine is the north american release. ❤
@ yeah in the uk we got hdr10 I have the lg g3 oled and I can’t enjoy the picture, it’s a shame because RUclips even the trailer is much cleaner
@dan9700
The US disc isnt hdr though right? So there should be no hdr highlights. 4k SDR wouldnt blow out the lighting.
the highlights being blown was almost certainly at the time of the recording...it can be made a little worse or better by grading but not to the extent we see here so, Id say it was intentional for the "look".... all I can tell you is this is the listed specs for the steelbook and my Sony is showing it as HDR as well ...BUT I also put it on my Panasonic ub820 and it looks the same - let me say this again, there is No Problem with the quality of the 4k!!! The issue I am talking about is how 4k pristine and high-detailed delivery is, in my opinion, at odds with the look they are going for
Video
Codec: HEVC / H.265
Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)
HDR: HDR10
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1
The umbrella set I think is a different transfer so I think it will look good. However I won’t know until it arrives whenever that is.
@@williamdriver1959 I don't think it is about the transfer...I just don't think high resolution 4k meshes well with the look they are purposely going for
@ I haven’t seen the 4k. I didint wanna buy since I bought the set. Will be a while before I can see it.
I totally get what you're saying. I have the 2nd one on 4k, and I had the same issue to me it has that look of an old horror movie that you would see at the drive-in in the 70s it's supposed to look old and gritty and 4k ruins that look I bet of they didn't use HDR it would prolly help it great review
exactly!!!!! that's exactly what I am saying! thank YOU! so many folks in the comments think I am hating on the movie and the 4k - the opposite is true!
Just got a couple from KL, still waiting for Far and Away and Sanctum from Shout
it is a style choice that they did well, it just doesnt fit great with 4k in my opinion...I am still waiting on Far and Away myself!
I'll get it on dvd. I'll get all three on dvd if possible. Thanks for your expertise.
I think the DVD transfer would look great! and Id buy a vhs if they had it!
I have Terffier 1&2, and All Hallow Eves in both in DVD
I think if they toned down the gore,it probably wouldn't have been as successful
why? they could have literally doubled the amount of people who could have seen it
@AVAPopCulture I totally understand your point of view completely, but I think what I meant is the fact that the terrifier series is so gory is what drew people to it so much, to see how over the top it is and to see what everyone was talking about. When I first watched the first terrifier I thought it was going to be crap and turned it off. After hearing people hype it up I decided to give it a second chance and my mind was completely blown and loved it and became a fan.
@@AVAPopCultureit cost 2 million to make and made 89.9 million id say that was pretty damn successful lol it may have made maybe 10 million more if it was r rated but for a unrated movie thats good i believe it is the record
yeah baby! let's do this!
Terrifer 2 on VHS is the best, hands down way to watch that movie
@thelastmoviestanding exactly! They are shooting and grading with that esthetic and I guess I still didn't get that across in the video judging by the comments lol
The Terrifier films aren't my cup of tea but I reckon they'd look awesome on VHS.
vhs is the way for these or dvd!
Ive only seen the first one but if this one had similar kills as one of them in the first then im not surprised they didn't feel comfortable letting your kid see it. Eventually ill check out the sequels.

The UK and Australian versions are better because at least the UK version has HDR10 and Dolby Atmos and the Australian version has HDR10 and Dolby Vision + Atmos, no idea why but the US version does NOT have HDR10 or Atmos
My us version shows up hdr10
But the issue is not with the quality of the 4k
@@AVAPopCulturecan you please prove this somehow. This is a big deal if you are spreading misinformation. You are quite literally telling people not to buy something and it's quite possible you are using the HDR aspect to deter them. In fact, I would say people shouldn't buy it because it has NO HDR... they may want to go for an import that doesn't clip. Instead you are saying don't buy it because of the HDR not being aesthetically pleasing.. therfore they skip this AND any good imports with proper HDR grades. Can you snap a photo of the player showing HDR10 for us? And maybe a photo of your HDR settings on the Sony?
I actually really liked the 4k. I understand what your saying, but to me its like i can see the 80s EFFECTS better, vs an 80s film being brought to 4k better, of that makes sense. I get qhere your coming from, but i like it alot
The youtube app is messed up. I wrote a comment about this video and just as I was to send it…I noticed it was a thresd for comments about a video from the Why Files… so weird. But now it is right.
I hope…
Thanks for another great breakdiwn of a movie from a cinematographer perspective. 👍

Yes, it does.
tell me you didnt watch the video without telling me
The 4k looks better than the blu-ray. The gore is perfect hopefully they never tone it back. You are wrong Art is already a horror icon.
He is an icon to hardcore horror fans not to the general public...
@@AVAPopCultureI get what your saying and I generally agree that he isn’t quite there yet. but my 12 year old nephew who NEVER watches horror movies dressed like Art for Halloween. I think he’s getting pretty close to becoming the next horror icon. Even if they don’t tone down the gore most people will know who he is based on the controversy that gets dusted up every time a movie comes out.
So by this argument, it wasn't intended for giant screens in theaters either?
not sure how you got that out of it...I literally pointed out the camera and the quality and said the 4k itself is great...the look, esthetic, and style are in direct opposition to the point of a 4k....they want a gritty, contrasty but washed out, rode hard and put up wet look so that the feel of the movie is older and "dirtier" then, for a 4k, that look is crapped on in favor of a clean pristine delivery....
I have the Terrifier trilogy 4k box set from Umbrella on its way to me now so this makes me sad to hear. :(
@@phizix5023 It is not a bad transfer or anything like that...the high resolution of 4k just doesn't mesh well, in my opinion, which the look and esthetic they are purposely going for...the two things are at odds...
@@AVAPopCulture yeah. I’m sure it’ll still look ok. If anything I’m just sad I didn’t get the more expensive version now which I’m pretty sure came with a VHS copy.
Hey, I think this actually looks great! It reminds me of an 80s quality movie put to 4k. It's like I can see 80s quality up close, and I prefer it to the Blu ray. Definitely don't be sad
@tzmkira002 I like seeing 80s stuff in 4k but that is waaaaaay different...80s stuff in 4k is being brought up from a 35mm negative and was only in lessor quality because there was no way to watch it that way back then...this movie was shot with digital and done in such a ways as to make it look older then downgraded (purposely) in post production and then that purposeful downgrade is raised back up to 4k...
@@AVAPopCulture and I totally respect and understand that take
I honestly never see myself rewatching the film so I’ll just skip out on it.
I agree with your points on the film. I don’t have many friends or family who know Art but they know Michael and Freddy.
Art is everywhere lol Terrifier 3 broke records and is the highest grossing unrated film of all time. You can't get there without being extremely well known
He is well known with horror fans...he is not well known with the general public like Freddy, Jason or Michael Myers
@ For sure. I’m a huge horror fan and seen them all but I haven’t heard amongst friends bringing the film up or anything.
