    I grew up in Thief River Falls, and have family members who still live there. Lots of local people work at Digi-Key and enjoy it. As far a work camping in the winter goes, the weather is going to be very challenging. Northern Minnesota can be brutally cold in January. We typically see a week in January when the daytime highs are around 10° and the nightime lows are about -30°. (That's negative 30°, about 60 degrees below freezing.) If you are from a southern state and haven't ever experienced that kind of weather, it might be just too dangerous for you to try living in your camper all winter. Locals don't camp in the winter.
    Be sure your car has a really good battery and is equipped with a block heater that you can plug in on cold nights. Keep a winter survival kit in your car especially if you travel out of town.
    If you are going to stay in a camper or RV of some sort, you will need to do something to avoid frozen pipes and tanks. Also have at least two heat sources, propane and electric, and a third if possible.
    It's also more expensive to live here in the winter. Heating costs can be much higher than you might expect. Plus jackets, boots, hats, gloves, mittens, snow shovels....

      When does it start getting bad with cold and snor and how is it in April?

    • @wanderlustwheels4870
      @wanderlustwheels4870 3 года назад +1

      It can start getting cold in October sometimes. November for sure. April can be pretty cold, and unpredictable, too. If you Google search "average monthly temperatures in Thief River Falls MN" you should get a pretty good chart. But bear in mind, Minnesota can deviate pretty far from average. Most of the resorts in northern Minnesota don't open for camping with water hookups until sometime in May and then shut off the water in early October. I'm not sure if there are things they could do to extend that time frame or not. You could call and ask, but you would also need to do something to protect your campers water lines. I think Petro Pumper/Falls Stay and Play has some camping spots where they have had construction or pipeline workers stay into the winter months. They might be able to tell you how it's done.
      I don't want to discourage you, I only want you to figure out how you are going to make this a successful experience.

    Sounds like you sure had a better experience than we did. Express made promises they did not keep regarding housing. Was a waste of time, energy and money to travel there for work. I'd recommend anyone thinking about working for Express to NOT work winter because they get you there then decide to close campgrounds, then back out of providing water and honey wagon services. Then they tell you that you have to get an apartment and store your RV at your cost. They sure didn't honor their word and made it clear that they didn't care about us.

    Time with Job... Last Thursday's zoom interview Alyssa did with Cheap RvLiving she said this year because of the Migration project the job may last til next April. After that she was looking at Express/Digikey as a late Spring/Summer job- May til late Sept. That does not sound like year round to me. But, if you are a Nomad or seasonal worker 4-5 months could work for you.

      Yes, older nomads are hired. The RV parks do have shower/bathroom facilities. Most of the sites are fhu.

      The rules are constantly changing. When we left, masks were not required. However, we have heard they have gone back to requiring that everyone wear them. You would have to check with Express about the current rules.
