Given Fromm’s stature as a public intellectual, it is easy to overlook the fact that he was first and foremost a practicing psychoanalyst. His work as a psychoanalyst was the one constant in a life and career that spanned different countries, cultures, languages and disciplines. This video seeks to shed light on Fromm’s clinical contributions, using three of his key texts. Fromm’s clinical ideas are discussed in their historical context and the parallels with work of contemporary relational psychotherapists and psychoanalysts are demonstrated.
Fromm, E. (1941) Appendix. Escape from Freedom.
Fromm, E. (1956) Selections from Art of Loving.
Fromm, E. (1959). Three Lectures given at the W.A. White Institute, transcribed and published in English for the first time in 2000.
