A glowingly Autumnal version of a work that grows on us slowly but continually. It is interesting to have both Clarinet and Viola versions. For me the Clarinet is more objective - Teresa Berganza or Gundula Janowitz. The viola brings to mind more subjective singers like Janet Baker or Christa Ludwig. All beautiful, but in different and contrasting ways.
@@filipszczotka6479 Correct. The sonata was eventually transcribed by one N. Simrock for the viola, and in the immediate wake of the transcription's it seems that Brahms did particularly take to this adaptation of his sonata. But I am speaking from years' past gone; forgive me for any mistakes. In any case, I personally think both versions have their merits, though I personally think the Romantic proponents of Brahms really shine through with the viola in the hands of a great violist
I have played this piece a couple times in in concert (allegro appassionata) and I feel that Zukerman definitely captures the deeply romantic style that perfectly suits this piece and the viola. I may be biased but the viola version is more touching in my opinion. It has a depth and a warmth that the clarinet just cannot even touch upon. In terms of balance, the piano is a little too in the foreground, however, this should be more described as a viola and piano sonata as they have an equal relationship, hence the balance isn't too far off what it should be! Again, thank you Brahms for this 'bop' as I like to call it, and thank you Barenboim and Zukerman for playing it with true Brahms flair!
Magnificent playing of a gorgeous work , this sonata originally composed for clarinet and piano ... most beautiful here . I fell in love with it in my younger days , and am falling again . Thank you Brahms , Zuckerman and Barenboim
Once performed this sonata with both clarinet and viola taking turns on various sections allowing the audience to hear both possibilities simultaneously.
Gorgeous playing, sublime tone quality. First mvt. to me too slow, some of the markings do not reflect in the playing. Third mvt. beginning : dotted rhythm sounds like triplets mostly on both instruments. Otherwise wonderful.

Very interesting comment
This is my favorite of Brahms viola sonatas.;so powerful. yet so tender! Just beautiful!
It is not a viola sonata, because it has been written for an outstanding clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld.
@@filipszczotka6479 But Brahms arranged it himself for the viola

Zuckerman, der eigentlich Geiger der Weltklasse ist, ist meines Erachtens, eine der besten und vortreflichen Bratschisten der Welt.

yes, clarinet, though later rearranged by Brahms for viola...
This is music with big M ! :-)
One of my favorites pieces. And a wonedrful interpretation as well.

Vielleicht die schönste Brahms-Sonate - ob mit Klarinette oder Viola, ganz egal

Nice idea
that sounds amazing
Vim aqui pelo Bruno do Plano B ;)
i thought this piece is for clarinet, but hummm, viola captures our heart.
Transcription by Brahms himself !
Yes - Brahms wrote it for a clarinetist called Richard Muhlfeld but then transcribed a second version for viola (changing very little)
Actually here because of Peter Zumthor's Atmospheres: Architectural Environments Surrounding Objects; would recommend

Not bad for a violinist! Still prefer Doktor or Primrose.
I dicover doktor due to you , tank you
How beautiful. I accompanied so many renditions of this piece
Amazing music!!
I always wanted this to be a piano trio (piano violin cello) haha

I believe the key is E-flat MAJOR. Otherwise, this is a lovely performance and upload.
