What impresses me when jazzers quote from other songs is not just the quote and how they make it fit in with the tune they're playing, but at the end of the phrase how they meld it into a continuing phrase of their improv at the end of the quote. Jim gives a prime example here on both the use of the quote and his using the quote as a springboard. Lovely.
Saw Jim Mullen at the Boaters in Kingston Upon Thames too long ago and he was brilliant. I approached him to say thank you for the great playing and asked him about music as I'm a very amateur guitarist. He was down to earth and sincere. His advice about learning jazz was "you learn the main roads then you learn the back roads then the really small roads" or something like that. I thought it was brilliant advice.
Absolutely beautiful. One of the prettiest tunes ever written in the hands of The master Jim Mullen, very nice tight little gem of a performance. Thanks for sharing :-)
I heard him saying he kept losing plectrums, Joe Pass used to keep an extra one in his mouth. However Jim's rhythm playing with Morrissey Mullen was incredible, especially his upstroke with the thumb. So sorry he didn't make it up to Scotland with Hamish Stuart for the Jazz festival.
I never heard Jim Mullen before. I've been missing out. I was not ready for that solo. Killer. You played excellent as well. Nice sign language to bring it back to the head.
Of course, this the Mullen of 'Morissey-Mullen' fame. He was a guitar giant back then and clearly is still a giant now (soaring way above the somewhat pedestrian stylings of the band!)
Hi! It's a social club in Allesley, Coventry where (normally) my band 'Swingshift 7' do a monthly Sunday lunch time gig and we invite guest soloists to play with us.
Blown away by the guitar solo ...Lovely. --- I hope I can play like him in future. :) ..
Morrisey Mullen was a fine Funk Blues Jazz band....love that band
My Favorite Things quote at 2:20. Awesome!

at 2.50 he quotes "bumping at sunset" Wes Montgomery
Wow! Been listening to him for decades but never seen a video . Never knew he played so beautifully with his thumb. Looks impossible.
.
Oh wow - that short quotation from 'My favourite things' around 2:30 or so blew me away :)
Outstanding. Well done.
Wow Jim Mullen so Amazing solo 🔥👏

His playing is timeless, everyone was great. You are only as old as you feel.
Mighty fine guitar playing!! Horace would have been happy with this!!
Been following Jim since early Kokomo and then Morrisey Mullin - what a guy - cannot get enough of this talented Scot
Jim Mullen is great player! Amazing tone, time feel and phrases.
unbelievable guitarist....real original artist...impeccable
Jim Mullen is a jazz monster. He's up there with another favourite of mine, Kenny Burrell.
Yep! A monster indeed!
Love it, and the way he plays with his thumb reminds me of Wes Montgomery

Nice quote from " my favorite things
Didn't see that coming, Grandpa. Much respect. Hot Licks, Great ideas... Very nice. You certainly can't judge a book by its cover.
Absolutely beastly. Unreal
Jim Mullen is so good so good

It sounds like they got a pro to play for a high school band.
@@JohnPrepuce That is f'ing rude.
@@pimeye - why? There are some great high school bands out there.
@@JohnPrepuce But these are pros.
First heard with with Brian Auger around 1970.
Incredible thumbpicker especially at his age. Guitar tone is as it sings and not strings probably best to describe. Good to know about his guitar.
it´s an Aria FA-71
Wonderful improv! There is hope for us old guys still playing and learning
Sweet!
I read that he plays with only his thumb, no picks. I do the same but nowhere near as well! I like his tasteful playing and want to hear more!
Very interesting, his technique and phrasing is influenced by Wes but harmonically and note choice he is somewhat closer to Jimmy Raney.
I feel compelled to write a comment, but truthfully I don't have the words.
Throw it down Old Head!😜👍👌👀🙌✨😃😎✔
Jeez, this cat’s smoking!
Outstanding
Where is the Jaguar Club?
