    The boat is 700mm long not incl. the rudder gantry.
    Total weight is 1600g, of which 300g is the hull; 200g the foam filled self-righting carbon lid; 380g is the battery 100g the motor.
    Hull construction is from 0.9mm Laser-cut Birch ply.
    Foils were hand built from Aluminium Alloy 6061-T6.
    Mostly hand tools were used along with a Dremel and a propane torch for brazing the Aluminium foils...
    Building the hull was the easy part...
    It took three attempts to build a foil system that worked well for stability at speed and fast cornering...

    Now if you did tests to see what you would preform in full scale and could reach 200-230 mph I would definitely buy something like that

    Hi Jerry, how did you do to find the best angle of attack and longitudinal position of the Main and secondary foils?

      Hi Erick,
      The longitudinal positions were worked out from deciding the weight split between the front foil and the rear foil; approx 75%/25% in this case. An uneven split means you get one bigger foil forward and a small foil at the rear. This is an 'aircraft' layout. The opposite is a 'canard' layout. You need to know the position of the LCG (Longitudinal Centre of Gravity) which you can only know for sure once everything is built and fitted, so you have to do a weight and LCG estimate at the design stage. The battery is used as a balance mass, which is why the battery tray is over length so you can move it back and forward to adjust trim. In the end it hardly needed to move much from the centre position.
      The incidence angles of front and rear foils are set in the design stage to give optimal L/D at max speed (about 7.5 m/s for this design) which for the foil sections used is about 1.5 to 2.5 deg. In actual testing the foils were tried at a number of different angle combinations to find which worked best in practice. Even just +/-1 degree on either foil makes a noticeable difference to the way the boat takes off and maintains trim in flight.

    im trying to turn a regular rc boat into a hydrofoil, but i encountered a problem, the motor is too high as to not be able to touch the water, what parts do i need to lower the motor to the water

      You will need a long shaft and a long shaft strut to support the propeller so it can be in the water at the same level or lower than the foils, or the foils will just lift the prop out of the water. I had to custom make both shaft and strut to get what I wanted. You may find you can modify some standard parts, but don't expect it to be easy! There's a reason why there aren't too many good hydrofoils out there... ;-)

      Thanks very much. There's no substitute for the experience you get from making stuff!
      I sent the cutting files to modelshop.co.uk/ and they did the laser cutting for me in a couple of days.

    I would of thought that the prop would go behind the rear foil due to prop wash

      is water turbulence not an issue for the foil?

      Not sure whether this relates to your question regarding the prop wash or turbulence from rough water. In any case the final set works well and appears to be stable, so if there is turbulent flow the aft foil doesn't seem to suffer as a result. The section is a non-laminar one precisely so as to be less critical about flow conditions. Hope that answers your question!

      Hi Ryan, considering your question about the prop position a little more, it is actually a similar argument to the one that early aircraft designers had over whether to have pusher or tractor propellers. The Wrights and other Americans favoured pushers so as to keep the flow over the wings better; the Europeans favoured tractor propellers so the propeller would work in undisturbed flow... the rest as they say, is history.
