    Sit in your car, smoke a blunt, drink a few beers and listen to this at a reasonable volume and those guitars are a god damn brain massage

    I agree. that main riff about 3 minutes in, just washes over/through me in a good way.

    Better than most atmospheric black metal I've heard from this year.

    As a fan of xasthur and burzum and summoning, + drudkh, this is cold and dissonant, excellent job mates. 👍

    I've never had much of an interest in USBM except for Absu and Weakling but these guys sound like they're worth checking out.

    "Cascadian" pretty much refers to bands from the Cascade mountain region who play Wolves in the Throne Room-style black metal. It's a stylistic term that refers more to the "scene," like "bay area thrash metal" or "Swedish death metal"--it yields a general geographic region and general hintings of musical style.

    i've been telling my friends about weakling and how they created the whole westcoast BM genre :) came across ashborer very recently and i'm really liking this ! I really hope that they can tour near me at some point

    @FallenEmpire13 Point taken. I'm not tied to labeling things down to the minute subdivision, but I find it useful to use these labels to get a handle on where a band is coming from and what I can likely expect. There are certain things I can expect from a Norwegian black metal band and others that I would expect from Cascadian. It's not the end-all definition of what they're doing by any means, but even many of the bands self-identify as such so I do think it has *some* descriptive value.

    @Muckruckuck 12 лет назад +1

    yeah, this is the first time ive heard that term. it doesnt really need to be called anything other than black metal. atmospheric black metal is as far as id go with the tag.

    @FallenEmpire13 I would say the broader genre has expanded to the point where it's a legitimate identifier of the specific sub-genre. There's certainly a difference in sound, and even more of a difference in worldview/philosophical approach.

    That's sad to hear :( Vastness and Sorrow/I Will Lay Down My Bones... are hugely influential and really powerful tracks. I'd recommend at least reviewing the former again, but I doubt that would change your mind. Oh well. We both think that Ash Borer rules, though, right? Right? They have a new album out, if you haven't heard it yet, too.

    Black Metal is a 1982 album by Venom and it predates Von by half a decade. Implying that WitTR were influenced by Von rather than Burzum because Von came first is silly, since you could just continue to move backward through time from one artist who influenced someone to another.

  • @zarucarsha

    @Preacherdaniel Weakling invented the style, but after Two Hunters came out it seemed like the style exploded in popularity :P

  • @zarucarsha
    @zarucarsha  13 лет назад +1

    @MasterExploder61 Have you listened to Wolve's Two Hunters album? It practically jump-started the whole atmospheric/cascadian style. I agree that Skagos aren't that great, but they're not horrible, either. Have you tried Panopticon, by any chance?

    Of course you can expect certain things, but they are pretty much on the surface. I live in central Europe, we have shitloads of (good) BM here and there are as much different styles as there are bands.

  • @zooders
    @zooders 11 лет назад +1

    then with that argument, witchfinder general would be close to the first, not venom

  • @Preacherdaniel
    @Preacherdaniel 13 лет назад

    @zarucarsha Actually Dead as Dreams by Weakling was the first cascada/whatever LP to jump start it all. Not trying to be a douche at all! Just trying to inform people of the first thing to trigger it all :)

  • @zarucarsha
    @zarucarsha  12 лет назад

    In terms of popularity, potentially. I think False are more similar to Weakling in terms of their similarly complex writing styles, though (or their new split, specifically). Ash Borer closer to the new WitTR, I think. :P

    @yoyosareawesome1 Haha, yeah. I'm not too big a fan of Collapse, honestly. The guitars were too far back into the mix for them to be enjoyed properly. Because of that I feel that the black metal parts are really lacking, but the folk and post- sections are very good. The self-titled itself is a great listen, and I'm hoping Social Disservices will turn out to be a phenomenal opus!

    And Venom went back almost a decade further, but that doesn't mean WitTR were inspired by Black Metal.

  • @MasterExploder61
    @MasterExploder61 13 лет назад

    @zarucarsha I have tried Two Hunters and I was very underwhelmed. I thought the percussion was stale and the guitar-work uninspiring. I'm kind of more interested in the styles of A Forest of Stars, Dammerfarben and Fen.

    @metalmonkey666 "cascadian/atmospheric BM bands are close to the same level except those with a slightly better production."
    Not true at all. Atmospheric black metal bands can vary with classical influence, folk influence, shoegaze influence, can be more melodic, more raw and in touch with second-wave.
