The issue with AI and art is that AI doesn't have a way to understand the emotional response that art causes in people when they are exposed to it. When an artist is making a painting, as the artist starts to paint they experience an emotional response while watching what they are painting, and that serves as feedback for them to know what to do next. Same thing with producers and composers. As we make the songs, we have an emotional response that serves as feedback for the next thing to do with the song. AI doesn't have that emotional response, so its only feedback is external from humans.

    • @aemythjensen

@William Braddell Of course, but then it relies on human data to learn that, which is exactly my point. AI can't know if a new type of music or art is going to be likeable unless it fits a patter it has already had access to, because it doesn't feel. It is limited by the data it has. Humans aren't because art is for us, we determine if we like something by the reaction it makes on us. And what's more important, those reactions can change over time. Tendencies in music and art change constantly because human reaction to them change.

And to say AI won’t be able to create anything original is beyond ridiculous and shows you don’t know anything about AI but that’s okay. AI advances exponentially and will be eventually considered alien to many people because of what it can do. So many people don’t understand anything about AI and try to undermine its capabilities to try and make themselves feel better.

If you want to become a singer songwriter, AI will not help you. If AI makes up the things you're supposed to come up with yourself, you just don't learn, you don't progress, you don't sharpen any skill or vision, you develop nothing. It's like have your mama tie your shoelaces. You want to become a musician, learn an instrument, learn music theory, harmony, analysis, composition, arranging. Broaden your view, discover new music, all that. Don't believe a single word of what all the silicone snorters here say about AI. Depending on it will degrade you, not empower you

You briefly mentioned being scared, and I am too. We have to be careful when giving people the ability to press a button and achieve the same results as people who have trained their whole lives on their art. Why would anyone bother putting in this time? I can obviously see why people not so good or haven't put time in will love this, also I can see how talented people can use it beneficially but It will be interesting to see how it pans out. It seems to me that we are eroding the value of music and art which is one of the highest forms of human expression.

Don't worry bothers and sisters. AI is only ever going to cause any uproar in commercial music that is already very flat, and formulaeic. TikTok music... There has always been music for those interested in music, and music for the masses that is made and promoted to sell. Let's face it: any per example Ed Sheeran song is so incredibly predictable and flat. It is literally a matter of pick one of the X amount of options of for all of the various standard ingredients of the song and then put them together. It's the next iteration of the same thing. For all I know it could already be an AI, and I don't give a damn. And even if an AI could generate a listenable song that could pass for Ed Sheeran, I just don't see it ever making the real Ed Sheeran obsolete. AI won't perform live, AI won't give interview. The fact that we CAN does not mean that we WILL. We can animate entire movies with CGI, that did not replace actors.
I personally do not feel threatened by AI at all. Real music lovers who are looking for touching music in which you hear the identity and personality and drive of the person making it, won't ever ever be fooled by AI music. AI will never do a new, personal thing. AI don't know how to use material, it can only generate validate options. AI can't interconnect, make a concept album. AI cant take a month to keep tweaking the sound of a mix and keep adding little details. AI won't capture the struggles and personal storms of a performer. Also, AI will never be an instrument teacher. Never will a computer generated chord sequence have ANYTHING to do with a trained musician harmonically improvising on guitar or piano. The people who want real music, will continue to seek for real music.

@@lp712 Yea sure... And it is quite clear to me that you just do not understand what music is and what function it has for humans. You are basically trying to tell me that soon we will be able to make human looking AI driven soccer robots that play much better and quite a lot more spectacular than humans. So all professional soccer players should start to fear, because soon we will be only watching soccer robots play each other. Whoever says that, has not understood what soccer is about, right? Well, whoever says that AI music threatens real musicians, has not understood what music is about. The fact that it is possible doesn't mean it is interesting. How can you not find AI generated music the most boring idea ever? You only think of music as something that is consumed by the millions on spotify. Music is so much more than that. What is AI going to do for the 50+ kids and adults that I teach music every week? What is AI going to do for the countless amateur orchestra's, choirs and bands and music groups? What is AI going to do for acoustic music, enjoyed by millions every day? For jazz and classical? For people who go to live concerts and festivals? What's AI going to do for all the people who want to connect to an artist and hear him or her through the music? And yea, I fully acknowledge AI might be able to generate some credible pop music along the lines of Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran, though I absolutely deny that it will ever do anything else than generate either extremely predictable music, either extremely weird and 'off' music. You don't seem to fully grasp my point: mega hit music is practically speaking already AI generated. Whether the generation is done by a team that is programmed to function like an AI, or an actual AI, makes no difference. Soulless music made to sell, is soulless music made to sell. People who consume soulless music, might start to consume AI music. People who love music, will never even be interested in AI generated music.

Great video Nick! I just subscribed.
Like anyone here who has spent thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars and years if not decades purchasing and learning: an instrument, songwriting, lyrics, performance, music recording engineering and mixing etc etc etc...this is an ABRUPT change and the immediate feeling is that this feels "TOTALLY UNFAIR" to everyone who has paid their dues. Reminder: LIFE IS NOT FAIR.
This scenario of "no bar to entry" reminds me of the Jurassic Park Jeff Goldblum line "you stood on the shoulders of genius and then..."
But there is no going back, the genie is out of the bottle. My prediction is that the advancements will be mind boggling even as early as a year from now.
Incorporating A.i into our work flows will likely be essential in order to compete in certain ways (i.e time it takes to create and populate a basic multitrack session with a.i assisted stems).
The thing I kinda struggle with at this particular moment is the "well...why should I even bother now? if everyone can just create visual and audio content with no experience at minimal time investment and practically zero cost then what is the relevance of of this art form and commodity. If it can be easily replicated, in essence we are being shown that although our species has special capabilities, that they aren't so special that they can't be unraveled in a binary equation. CRAZY!
Personally, I create sound and music for animation and video games so working with pipeline tools that include basic a.i is not a new concept for me...but as a musician it is.
So, will one of the DAWS like Ableton or logic or FL studio ( I don't expect Pro tools to jump on board early on) incorporate some basic a.i creation tools into their software...one would think yes.
In a way, NATIVE INSTRUMENTS REAKTOR is a glimpse at utilizing randomization and signal mapping to create patches and sequences that were generated with software programming assistance.
In summary...feeling kinda lost (and redundant) but fully acknowledge I will need to adopt bits and pieces of a.i content creation tools and workflows to stay in the game.
if anyone is wondering, my EDM / DJ producer name is dj DREAMALOT and my RUclips channel is dreamalotmusic.
    Buckle up and good luck!

I am not musically trained so i find the VSTs which assist in developing Chord progressions /basslines etc (eg: Captain Plugins, Orb, Splash (RIP:( ) ) really helpful. They are not proper AI and I get that, but they are tools that i use to generate those components I'm not that great at. I think AI tools will be the same for the music producer, generating hose elements that still need to be sequenced, effects added, mixed etc by a human.
In work we have a saying, the tools we develop are "decision support, not decision making". In my mind that is what the future of AI in music will be.
Did i hear you say that you will be using DallE for Album art? I have a friend who runs a label, who is doing the same thing with MidJourney - I do feel for the graphic artists who are loosing income to AI.

I would argue against the trolls but I can already tell that it would go nowhere because they're to busy reveling in their dopamine to take the time to analyze the severity of consequences that could compromise the future of not just music's future but the future of the human minds ability to think on a creative level and for people to create a work that stems from the heart and not just what is fed to them by a machine. Not only this but the value of creative works will be virtually destroyed when the market becomes flooded by that which lacks the genuine emotions behind the human touch. But unfortunately those who are either wrapped up in the illusion of all technological developments being beneficial will be blind to this until it is too late to reverse the damage if these developments are not created and utilized in a responsible and regulated manner as an inspirational aid and not a crutch to create an entire piece. This response is not for the trolls but for those who can still think on a critical level independently of what modern society has told them to believe. I can see the ocean of the blind incoming to rage against this wisdom. Let them come. It seems at the moment, being a sheep is all they know how to do. For the others who are willing to listen, think to yourself. What do you want and what can you do? And with this in mind act for the benefit of more than just yourself.

great video and great analysis. However don`t underestimate the human ability of creativity, which is not only based on data collected from the past, but also consists of the ability to plug in to a stream of ideas, that seems to happen outside the realm of cognitive abilities. If you ask the greatest scientist and Nobel price winners who had great ideas they would all agree that the solution was inevitable, it occured to them. They had an open mind to recieve that input and they manifested it through experimenting or presenting to the right context.
The ability to recognize whether something is groundbreaking and revolutionary is not quantifiable. Since truly great and gamechanging creations of art have that aspect in them. AI will undoubtedly (if asked the right questions) enhance the flow of ideas of humans, by simulating scenarios based on all existent data (which is the strength that sets that technology apart from a human mind), but it will never become the source of ideas, as long as it doesn`t become a concious being. The question whether that will ever be possible is a philosophical one and one that exceeds the understanding possible in our human condition.

Nice video, nice insight and good job (liked it). Anyway it makes me so sad to see musician cheering and getting excited for AI in music. I don't agree on most of the stuff you said, for example:
    - would you be as happy to have Drake's AI voice in your song as to collaborate with the real one? (just to follow your example, in case Drake is your idol)
    - or would you be happy if a hater would go on AI making a song in your style with your voice singing horrible things just to destroy your image and releases it?
Apart for the tons of headaches we are going for, I mean not only Cancel Culture 2.0,
    - would you be happy to know that a brand refuse you a soundtrack/jingle job because you cost more than a click on an AI website? (and you have already lowered your fees at the point where you can't even make a living out of your craft)
    - or would you be happy to know that you don't get any gig anymore because AI artists cost nothing, are ready to act on the spot and don't have human needs? (It is already happening in K-Pop, it's a matter of time).
    - or would you be happy to be writing lines of text for at least a couple of hours a day instead of taking your guitars and playing something because now that everyone is a musician they release 3 songs a day (TikTok reference here) and you don't have time capability to touch a single instrument anymore?
I hate to sound like a boomer, but the more I see AI in music, the more I think we are giving permission to incompetent people to think they are living the dream.
Think about this: how long does it takes for you to mix or master a song? how long does it take to create a bass line? Do you really need an AI for that?
But well, I don't mean any hate, just opening a slot to discussion. My guess is that in a few years, we will all be writing lines of text cause "you have to publish 3 songs a day at least to be relevant ... and make a TikTok video for each one of them" until people get tired of it and music and musicians become more obsolete than painting on rocks.

Think that they have the right to put out as many tracks with your style or voice even when you are dead, and if you complain about anything you get dropped and you can't sing at all, cause now you are a competitor...
Don't know, everything seems so wrong to me, and still I see musicains excited about what has to come.

You know what would be cool? If someone could invent an AI which trawls through the internet identifying companies and writing personalized CV's and cover letters to each and everyone of them, on your behalf. Let's be honest, most of us may need that once this technology develops further and it's no longer feasible for even more of us to be able to do music as a full time career.
But anyway, don't worry about that, just keep repeating after me: "I'm super excited about AI technology and to see where it's headed" .. lol

i believe i saw a tiktok about someone who either programmed that or talked about an AI that does it, but even if it doesnt exist yet, that does not sound like it would be too complicated considering what some AI can already do

    Also, thank you, Nick.
This was an eye opening video about something I thought I was well informed.
    NOW I am.
And I better start running to keep up.
    Oh well.
    Too late.

A lot of musicians make music for advertisements or they do background music for tv-series and so on. I don't think that's going to be a thing. You'll have expensive movie producions that will hire a composer but most musicians will probably not be able to make money like before. And for graphic designers it's even worse, because they usually don't do performances. It just presses more on the collective existential question. Where does humanity want to go? Easy communication with machines is fine and all, but that's not a human need, we're just solving problems we didn't even know we had before. AI is going to make a few people rich and it will flood reality with amazing artistic impressions so that nobody will be impressed by anything anymore. AI is not solving problems, it's solving fun right now.

@@hombacom I don't think that the future will be bleak, quite the opposite. But openAI claims to solve all human problems, but it just does low hanging fruit right now, and we're just aimlessly going into the direction of least resistance and most effect. Our species just takes another random path, it's not going to make us happier or anything.
I don't even think the direction of AI is bad in itself, I just worry that it doesn't work well with all the social and economical systems we have set up. It will create more dysbalances and problems than solve them in the short term.

I personally will never use AI to generate "inspiration". AI is great if you want to 'create' a song and you're not a musician. Problem is when you do that, "you" didn't create the music. You didn't play it. A big chunk of music is the musician actually performing the music. It's amazing that AI can do this, but how can one say "Listen to this new song I wrote"? You use the word "enhanced" with respect to your voice. If you can't hit a note and you use AI to "hit" the note, you are faking it. You can't really sing it, so it is fake. I guess some are OK with that.......

AI WILL revolutionise the way we create and experience music. In a devious nefarious way, this could explain why the likes of Paul Simon, Sting Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and Bob Dylan, have sold off the rights to their music for millions of dollars.
Naively, Sting says "It is absolutely essential to me that my career's body of work have a home where it is valued and respected - not only to connect with long-time fans in new ways but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians and generations" ... (THAT is complete b0ll0cks)
The reality is the fact that the back catalogue of ANY artist which has been bought up, is and WILL be used to train Ai systems without impunity ... This, in turn could lead to new (Ai) artists being labelled as the 'new' Paul Simon, or the 'new' Sting or the 'new' Bruce Springsteen, etc etc ...

my biggest problem with ALL the AI stuff they are doing is, it's tools for complete babies that know how to do nothing. text to music is a waste of time and not useful to any real producer. AI midi drum quantization? i'd use that every day. AI pitch correction? yep. AI vocal comping? yep. AI tone matching. yep. AI that can listen to your music and provide additional ideas? THAT would actually useful. text to .. whatever, is a neat gimick but not that useful to real creators. I don't want AI to write for me, I want it to collaborate WITH me.
