This is a very nice trick. I read a somewhat similar trick it in a magic book about 30 years back. The author described it as a thought reading experiment and explained that success of it depends on how the spectator is able to transmit his thought. Now the magician takes a rectangular piece of paper, places it on the table and draws two circles which intersect and create a common curved space between the circles. Now he says that one circle belongs to him and the other to the spectator and if a word is written in the common space, whatever thought written in a single word inside the common space can be transmitted by him to the magician. After handing over the piece of paper to the spectator the magician asks him to write a powerful action oriented word like love, hate run, jump, float etc etc. and asks him to hand over the pre-folded paper in the form of a billet. The magician takes the billet and immediately tears into several pieces and burns it in an ashtray asking the spectator to look at the fire and try to transmit the word to the magician who turns back so that the spectators thought does not interfere with his. While burning the paper pieces he removes and hides the small piece with the word in his palm as he tears the pieces in a special technique which can be learnt with a little bit of practice. Now he dramatizes and reveals the word slowly. This was shown as a Closeup magic trick.
Thank you so much for sharing that detailed description, Jay! The effect you described is indeed a classic known as the Center Tear, which involves a clever technique for retrieving the written word. My video actually showcases a different method known as a switch, which is much easier to perform compared to the Center Tear. I appreciate your insight and love hearing about your experiences with magic over the years!
