Crooklyn is one of my favorite movies. I've seen it a few times and I just watched it again. the other day. the point that gets me is. after the mom died. when she is sitting on the couch. and her brother comes over. and sits beside her. and holds her hand this movie is so good. it never gets old. that's why I just pulled up her name. to find out what happened to her. as a grown up now
Susan Perron I HATED the movie as a kid just because the mom died and I was raised by a single mother at the time and I couldn’t imagine what they were going through.
Detective Hawk I know. But that mom train that lil girl. Taught her how to shop how to clean and she always looked after her lil brother. Her mom told her to look after things. I always wondered what the mom whispered In her ear. But if you notice that lil girl put on her mommy's shoes 👠 and cleaned the house 🏡 looked after her brother and took on the role of big sis. The mom knew the dad struggled too. So in opinion that lil girl becomes queen of that house and she kept it in order. Her mom taught her well. And the older brothers knew what was expected of them. Like don't go to bed without pitching in with the chores. Mom taught them that. I feel in real life mom would have been missed beyond belief. But they family would have survived with no issues. I loved the movie
This is still my favorite film by Spike Lee. Considering the great body of work of Spike Lee, it is amazing that "Crooklyn" has been so overlooked. It is not "edgy", not controversial, none of the things which people expect from Spike Lee. Can't the man just make a great retro film about a family? It is simply a sweet film and DESERVES BETTER! That said, Zelda Harris carried the film and SHE deserves better as well with her magnificent performance. Perhaps it would fare better with today's critics. It should have been nominated for Best Film and more. I still get tears in my eyes whenever I hear "Ooh Child" and think about that scene at the funeral.

He could have maybe referenced another scene but, he maybe expected her answer to be like- “Hell no, that wasn’t fun”. It was supposed to elicit some sort of cute, kid response. He even corrected her when she said she liked to shoplift- he points out how she likes to PRETEND or ACT to shoplift. I don’t see Conan having a racist bone in his body. His correcting her shows HIS good heart.

@@Toonice20 I actually found that to be depressing. She basically lost her childhood after mom died. Forced to grow up much faster.
