My house has a granny flat. Eventually, I’m considering moving into the granny flat, and renting out the house. This couple is smart. They are earning money with the main house. If they start a family, they can live in the main house and rent out the studio.

      Graet idea!
My plan after uni is to buy a house (single Dad brother & nephew will rent) with a granny flat that I live in. I can lease my flat as well and go off on adventure.
Secure accommodation for my sibling, income for me and inheritance for my nephew.

    • @pattimessenger6214
      @pattimessenger6214 2 года назад +12

@@LaSorciereFeuillue Great plan! You might want to consider an older duplex. I’m in my 60’s. They were very common where I lived growing up, near Seattle. The ones I’m thinking of were usually 3 bedroom on each side. The older ones usually came on bigger lots, whereas most new builds are usually on postage stamp sized lots. That bigger lot might afford the opportunity to place a tiny house or two, so that you and your family can have family togetherness while also offering privacy and security of being able to close and lock your own door to get away from too much togetherness and family drama.
Also, if someone wants their own tiny house, let them pay for it. Get a written lease agreement for the parking space. Don’t try to foot the bill for everyone.
When I was young, my mom advised to buy a duplex, live in one, and rent the other. That would cover most of the mortgage payment. Wise advice. If I had stayed in that area and not married, that is probably where I would be, with my home paid for with other peoples money, the place paid off and rent still coming in like the tide.
      Best wishes. And good luck!

@@pattimessenger6214 good advice and I appreciate your support.
A duplex is a good idea however they tend to be two bed on small blocks where I live (Tropical North Queensland in Australia) and have that skanky rental property look about them with small yards.
I am eyeing off larger blocks with an established house and a Big Shed With Potential as well as researching local council permissions for a THIMBY.

Portland has always been progressive in this area, I hope other places will wake up to this smaller version if communal living. I’m moved and inspired. Thank you.

I LOVE watching stories like this, where patience, planning & making sure you're doing everything right ... culminates in helping to positively change Council Legislation ... even if it's a little bit at a time.
Sounds like you actually have people on your Council, that actually care about alternative living, and the spaces that people want to build/errect. Go Portland !!! Hugs from Australia, Veronica 💜

I'm from the Midwest and had never heard of ADU's before. We have VBO's (vacation by rentals) rand Air B&B;s as well here in SW Michigan. Many communities here have actually outlawed them because the homes here are being bought up by corporations who rent them out during the summer seasonal months. And this sometimes means larger groups, lots of noise, vacation parties and fireworks in the middle of the night which disturbs the local residents. This has caused multiple issues in the neighborhoods as well as fewer homes available for families who need homes. Personally, I would much rather have tiny homes in our community with year-round residents who are invested in the neighborhoods. I love how you have created such a great a habitat in such a small space - just genius! I'm thrilled that Portland has accepted these tiny homes as my son live in Portland and someday when I age, and my retirement savings runs out, I might need to live in a tiny home on his property. I am thrilled!

This is so nice. I have 10 acres in Florida that I have an old mobile home I have been renting. I moved a nice 12 x 20 building out there for storage in 2020. I was planning to take a tour of the US, however, I believe I will postpone.
My tenants decided they do not want to share the property with me ( they have really junked up the place); so they are moving out. I have been lenient with them.
These designs are more efficient than trying to repair the mobile home.

had to look it up: ADU = Accessory Dwelling Unit. never had heard this term before . . .

We discussed the meaning in the episode but totally understand not being familiar with term. They really aren’t common in most of the US; though that’s slowly starting to change in cities!

Still doesn't make sense to me, what is the difference. They live in it. Where or what are the accessories DWELLING there.

@@slofootcrofoot Adult Dwelling Unit - a legal term governments use to allow small houses in yard, basically.

I think I have found the design for my Tiny Home. Our community says no bigger than 1000. I have 1.47 acres and can park in the tiny apple orchard and rent out my 1700, 4 bed, 2 bath house as a vacation ABNB on the island.

That really tiny house would be hard to live in for 4 years with two people. My husband and I live in a 320 garage apartment for 4 years and even that has been hard sometimes.

Oh gosh I wish I had seen this a year ago! I’ve been trying to find an already built affordable tiny house that I could move to Portland in. This is an ideal situation, and I hope that I can find a scenario like this one soon.

How wonderful to have so many share a city lot. We are soooo far from this in Texas.

I loved this and hope to one day start a community like this but on a larger scale. Getting back to self sustaining life living is the way we all should be living. Just my hopes and opinions.

I know it’s more money but I love the idea of using the house as an air b&b and doing full time living in an adu or tiny home. You can still live tiny and not have to worry about finding parking or a place to put it.

Very nice . Wish it would work out for you all to move into the main house or I should say the Airb&b with the baby so you can all stay close , it does take a village to raise a baby .
    Would be wonderful.
Congratulations for a wonderful area & friend ship
