- There have been tons and tons of great and bad races. But what about races that are both? Well that’s exactly what the 2005 Coca-Cola 600 was. It had a great finish and great racing. But it also had tons of crashes and poor drivers and cars running up front when maybe they should not have. So what is so great or poor about this race? Find out, this is the worst best race in NASCAR history.

I remember watching this race man do I feel for Bobby if he would have won that race it would’ve been a turnaround season
Poor Booby... ;)
Booby labonte lmfao
I was watching it too. I always liked Bobby back then. Was already getting sick of Johnson. It was definitely a tough one. I was and still am a Kurt fan
Booba
He Was Unselfish that night
Jimmie Johnson’s 3 Coke 600’s in row is extremely underrated. Aswell as his 12 wins coming from 26 starts spanning from 2003 to 2016. “When it comes to Charlotte, Jimmie Johnson has been THE man to beat.”
As awful as Jimmies last seasons were, he was still pretty good on the Charlotte Oval.
Being a Jimmie Fan, I used to love Lowes Motor Speedway because it was a Jimmie Sponsor, Jimmie was so Damn Good at Lowes
knaus had the magic setup, jimmie was trash without him lol
@@cdel4391 so what about Byron, where was the magic there

I feel like the YellaWood 500 sorta fits in. INCREDIBLE RACING, but a little sloppy at the start and towards the end. And OH YEAH, the YELLOW LINE RULE.
YellaLine 500
The spring race was cleaner and no controversy at the end. But same great racing. Easily makes it the best race of last season IMO.
The yellow line rule doesn't apply to JGR
Iceberg: worst best

I watch Iceberg but love Slapshoes and BFM and Dirty Mo because they actually convey the "reality" of the sport and not some clickbait drama.
The back straightaway shot on the last lap of Jimmy and Bobby’s cars bouncing is awesome
The endless times Darrell Waltrip would jinx the leader
Except Ricky Craven's win at Darlington

The Charlotte races in the mid-2000s were crazy races
I always loved the 2005 fall Charlotte race where everybody's tires blew up but Jimmays car was bulletproof.
@@steveguzman6141 The fall 07 Charlotte is a bitter one as a Newman fan cause I thought he had it won before he crashed with 2 to go
The track wasn’t worn, it had actually just been redone in a “diamond grating” fashion
Something similar happened at Indy around that time as well which caused the drama in F1 there
@@packisbetter90 yes that was the 2005 usgp tire debacle. Only 6 cars started the race. The only cars that started the race were on Michelin tires
@@gwhit9281 they were on Bridgestone tires, Michelin teams were the ones who backed out
They could’ve just left it alone. I don’t understand why SMI wanted to diamond grind it. It caused the subsequent repave the next season and destroyed it.
Gosh I miss Larry McReynolds in the booth
Honestly. Such a treat.
me too miss D W too
Yeah I agree. He was a character.
Mike Joy, DW, and Larry McReynolds were the perfect Fox Sports team in my opinion, with Benny Parsons and Allen Bestwick keeping the NBC side of things exciting and funny.
My heart is still broken from this one. Was rooting hard for bobby
My guy Kahne had a blown tire, Bill Elliott got dumped, Nemechek had a blown tire, and to top it all off, Labonte lost on the last corner of the last lap. Still pretty sad about this one.
Yell him and his brother terry,Terry, was 2 of the nices guys that you would want to ever meet.i knew of no one that disliked either one of them ever now!!!!!
i miss this era of racing, so glad i grew up in it
Just like the 07 500, we could've gotten an amazing Bobby Labonte comeback win, but no, we had to get a boring Johnson win.
2007 Daytona 500? Harvick won, Labonte P21, Johnson P39. Johnson had no Dega wins either in 07.
@@fuzzytron He means Kevin harvick and Mark martin
I remember this race. Broke the record for cautions.
I was highly upset when Jeff Gordon got in that wreck
he struggled on this type of tracks through out the season, but in this race he had the pace to win the race
This was the first race I ever attended. Late in that race it sure felt like the caution was coming out like every 10 seconds. But it was fun to be a part of. I had been casually watching since the previous year. But I’ve been fully hooked ever since this night
I still remember this race like it was yesterday. My favorite race since I started paying attention to the sport in 02. I was soooo conflicted because they were, and are, my favorite drivers in the sport. Also, you had me looking for a hidden tab playing Louder with Crowder. lol
How the heck is this race not in better quality? Such a well-known race, yet Nascar has yet to uplaod it, and one unofficial upload only has most of the second half of the race.
I bet Fox has an HD version but they never aired it.
It's really been 16 years? God I was at this race with my dad but it seems like yesterday. One of the few things both my dad and I both enjoyed. RIP old man.
I was actually at this race. It was the only time I have ever been to the Coca Cola 600. Like 20+ cautions, raced literally lasted forever. Add to the fact that Dale Jr wrecked Michael Waltrip on the front stretch, hearing Jr getting booed was wild. Bobby Labonte was so close to winning, I thought he had won until the replay on the big screens. The race was nuts. I've been to over 25 races in person, and other than the 2012 Daytona 500 where I seen Juan Pablo smack the jet dryer, this was the wildest race I have ever been to.
As usual. Outstanding video iceberg, thank you
I still remember that race and remember when my favorite driver Bobby Labonte lost to my second my driver Jimmie Johnson.
Yep I remember that race as well. 2005 had some great finishes.
Great video. Before watching I was getting this race confused with the 2007 running. I remember watching that broadcast live thinking that Kyle Petty might win...
2020 yellawod 500 the racing was good but The finish was just BS
I appreciate you letting it play from that last restart! Made the video better in my opinion
Being a JJ fan from day one this three peat was thrilling to watch!
So, was it the Worst Best Race or the Best Worst Race?
Both simultaneously
Despite this being the first season I really followed in NASCAR, and being only 9 years old, I remember this race quite well. Junior wrecking Waltrip caused my grandma and grandpa to argue 😂
I was waiting to see Bobby kick the car. Or wasn't it at this race?
Even tho it was on fuel mileage, I liked the 600 that Mears won. But only for the top 5. That said I wouldve been just as happy had any of that top 5 won, especially one K.Petty!
Great video :)
I couldn't imagine being one of those fans at that race and having to deal with all the yellows thinking "Come on guys, where's our long runs?"
Fans like cautions at the track. Chance to piss and get beer.
I've been watching a ton of "Best of the Worst" on Red Letter Media so this video is amazing xD
I think around this time was the peak of the Fox broadcast booth's quality.
Although I think it should be worth noting that the new booth for this season has been fun so far!
Records that probably will not be broken or done again that were set in the last 30 years
5 straight Championships - Jimmie Johnson(2006-2010)
4 Straight Southern 500s - Jeff Gordon(95, 96, 97, 98)
3 Straight Coke 600s - Jimmie Johnson(03, 04, 05)
4 wins in a row - Jeff Gordon(1998) and Jimmie Johnson(2007
10 or more wins in a season - Jeff Gordon(13, 1998) and Jimmie Johnson(10, 2007)
Gordon and Johnson really were good those years.
Man those Gen 4s looked bad fast and they put on great racing, hope this Next Gen car can bring some of the magic back.
And I don’t want to hear the bs about the Next Gen car when we HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN IT RACE YET.
People forget he slide into his pit box leading the 600 in 2002. He could’ve easily had 4 in a row. That’s how good he was there.
He could have also broken the record of most wins as a rookie too
Why did I think the title said "The worst race ever"???
Pretty much all of the better restrictor plate races fall into this category lol. They're all pretty much bad races from anything more respectable than a casual fan standpoint, but a few of them have a weird allure.
I don’t mean to be that guy and correct you, but in Nascar’s off season, Charlotte (then Lowe’s) actually received a repave. The reason why the track was a mess was due to the diamond grinding they performed on the new racing surface. Diamond grinding basically is a way to age the track a little bit so it feels somewhat “broken in” but the track lasts a longer time. Diamond grinding essentially causes the track surface to turn into a million tiny teeth causing tires to shred and lighter compound tires (which is what they used at this race) They began to bring heavier compounds to Charlotte in order to prevent this from happening again. Diamond grinding is what happened to Indianapolis Motor Speedway the same year causing the driver walk out in the US Grand Prix for F1.
This race reminds me of the time I went to the coke 600 and how its practically the total opposite. I went to the 2012 race (I think it was 2012 might've been 2011). I recall there being 1-2 cautions the whole race for debris and that was it. Kasey Kayne won the race in his Quakerstate 5 car.
I was actually at this race. Also was at the 2008 when Stewart cut a tire with 2 to go and Kahne won.
I have no regrets for watching this entire, glorious trainwreck of a 600-miler, for both the near-constant drama in the closing half, and especially for those last 5 laps. That sort of finish is exactly what makes racing fun for me -- dicing right up to the checkers!
Being a Johnson fan and holding my breath for 600 miles was insane, and I knew he had it.
I love how its the crown jewels that are always debated as one of the worst races in NASCAR history lol
No kidding. What about the snoozefests at Pocono or New Hampshire or something?
Atleast the crown jewels ARE crown jewels. That keeps them from being worst at anything. They always have intrigue and that more than most tracks.
@@-BigMike- I'd argue many snoozefests occur at Pocono due to sheer size and set up reasons or New Hampshire being a one groove track. You either get a complete snoozefest or a very entertaining race with no intermediate at 80% being races you could fall asleep to!
The Race at Martinsville where there was like one caution and Rusty Wallace won the race without taking a pit stop. Great race in that one was rooting for Rusty to make it to the end but the worst great race in that NASCAR top people implemented the Fuel Cell on the standard size gas tank due to this race and changed how people ran Short Track stuff.
How did you not mention the diamond grinding or whatever Humpy had done to the track? Heh
The best worst oxymoron title in RUclips history.
This is the best Wreckfest mod I've ever seen
In my opinion, the 05' 600 was one of the WILDEST races ive seen!
awesome video 💪💪
The race in the fall was crazy too. I remember being a kid and missing it. I turned the tv on at like 11 thinking it had to be over but because of the cautions there was still a little left. Lol
That was an amazing dogfight on the last 3 laps!
As a Bobby fan growing up, I have one word to describe that ending:
PAIN
Exactly. I'm in the same boat
i remember being 12 years old coming back from the lake near my place to watch this race, and i was getting into NASCAR back in 2005, and i stayed up the entire time watching the race, even to the point where i had it on the radio heading back home with my family from my grandparents' house and running up to my room to watch the rest of it.
this race sealed my interest in NASCAR and made me watch the entire 2005 season and even looking back, I still consider it my favorite NASCAR race. Is it the best? probably not for many people, but i still hold it to a high regard for the awesome racing and the unpredictable chaos.
My nominee is probably the race at Charlotte the following year at the October race, after they repaved the track. There was *too much grip* on the fresh surface and it was tearing up tires. What I remember is that everyone who was in the lead for more than a few laps would blow a tire and hit the wall. it happened over and over again. It wasn't until near the end of the race that Jimmie Johnson took the lead and won the race before his tires blew.
Remember the top 10 drafters can you do top 10 drivers that can turn left and right please
great coverage YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!
Man, Jimmie and 1.5 mile tracks were some type of combination in the 00’s. Like MTJ recently tbh.
Got a video idea. In 2001 NBC didnt call the track Lowes motor speedway and it got to a point Humpy Wheeler was gonna have all the NBC trucks towed off the speedway properties and have either Fox or ESPN broadcast the race. Fall 2001 cup race. All of that is from memory but its such a crazy story.
I haven’t watched this race since it aired live. I forgot about all of the wrecks aside from Junior, Kenneth, and Waltrip. Might have to rewatch it again soon.
No matter how many times I watch this finish, I am always on the edge of my seat watching it
It may've not had as many cautions, but I think last night's Coke 600 just became the wildest 600 race ever.
2nd Wildest
Man I wish fox would still play DW's audio of boggity, boggity, boggity at the start of each race. Because even though DW got on my nerves most of the time. I really miss that.
Bobby Labonte was my favorite driver as a kid. I still have a bunch of his unopened memorabilia.
If I recall correctly from S1apSh0es, the 2005 Coca-Cola 600 had a diamond ground track. Track president humpy wheeler touted the project as litigation, trying to naturally improve racing grooves with a repave. However Goodyear misses the mark, and after the events of the 2005 Coke 600, NASCAR alert its lesson and never used litigation at any track ever again.
However, in the modern era, there are some tracks I want to have diamond ground again, like Auto club. My proposal for this would be making sure that the teams bring Daytona and Talladega tires to the track, as I believe that they are harder tire compounds, even if they are slower.
2005 Nascar: omg 22 cautions
2021 Nascar: hold my empty beer can
I just started watching again this season so I have a limited sample pool, but for me, the trucks championship race at Phoenix this year could hold the title of worst best race for a while. Very entertaining and pretty good racing throughout, playoff drama, ruined by 12 cautions for 77 laps (in what was supposed to be a 150 lap race). There were FOUR overtime attempts that extended the race by an HOUR. Worth the watch if you skip the overtime caution laps
I was actually at this race. Well for a while at least. I worked at the then NASCAR Speedpark at Concord Mills, a few miles from the speedway and we were always slammed for every Charlotte race, especially during the All-Star and Coke 600. I had to work before the race and it was pure hell. Finally I get to leave and go to the race, I have to park up on that big ass hill and basically hike to the track through all the mud, I finally get to my seat and my favorite driver, Kurt Busch, wrecks almost as soon as I sat down. With the terrible day I'd already had combined with the fact that my seat was directly behind a support pillar I got up and went home.
Lmao you would have to do a video at least 3 hours long of all the cringey/creepy/weird things that Chris Myers has ever said during a broadcast. I'm not gonna lie that would be a very interesting video
You forgot September 2000 New Hampshire race where they used restrictor plates and Jeff burton led all 300 laps.
Didn’t they also do a diamond grinding repave to “artificially age” the track?
They did, and safe to say, after this race and the fall race, there's a reason why they never did it again.
Indianapolis did it too.
When Indy did it, F1 said goodbye and never came back lol
@@-BigMike- it has since they say goodbye but they race here in the US and Canada and Mexico nowadays so let's be honest we got coda out of the Indianapolis
But yeah tire manufacturers do not like that they can't they can't figure out how to make the tires work
2007 Sam’s Town 250: “Am I a Joke to You”?
Easily a far worse race...the 2005 Coca Cola 600 actually had some long green flag runs in the beginning but the second half became a crash fest...2007 Sam's Town 250 was just a non-stop crash fest...I think 5 laps was the longest green flag run.
As a Bobby Labonte fan who also was not big on Jimmie Johnson (in my childhood) man this one still hurts. BAD!
Bobby should’ve gone high
Yeah I forgot how tense that final restart and finish is. Mostly brought on by all the carnage and cautions throughout the night but a great finish nonetheless! It really is a shame Bobby couldn’t bring it home
Leaving out the exact reason that caused all the cautions is a big miss in explaining this race
I remember watching this race. I'm pretty sure at the end they said how Bobby didn't have a mark on his car and then he kicked it in anger.
This was my birthday present that year. I loved it but my grandpa swore off going to the 600 ever again.
And just months later, diamond grinding was also a one of the causes for F1’s farcical US Grand Prix at Indy. Goodyear and Michelin both screwed up badly the during same year
I've watched so many races so many times now that I can pull out any race out of my head and know what happened.
This race broke my heart so much as Labonte fan. Still mad at Johnson for this one.
Wow, I forgot about this. Goddamn it would have been so awesome if Bobby one.
Jimmy was the man and boy were those the years nascar needs to get back to. Cars beatin around on a rough track, lots of horsepower, low downforce..wtf happened man.
I think it would’ve been pretty cool if he would’ve saw two cars racing the same race from the same team with the same sponsor. I know Ray Evernham did this, however he has been the only team that I know of that has done this in the last 20 years, unless I missed a race with someone else
I remember this *marathon* of a race. The cautions were soooo annoying
Dale Jr. tries to bump draft and wrecks
Brian Vickers "Hmmm that sucks Jr. but I'm built different"
God that was a very long race that I thought it will never end.
I was there, it was awesome. Gordon was my guy so I was a little bummed out but the finish was one to remember.
I went from really liking this race until about 10 laps to go, then I really, really hated it.
Everyone' thoughts: Acually relevant to the topic
My thoughts: "Man i forgot just how good that Mopar 9 car looked"
Gosh dang, look how many people were in the seats!
It was the diamond grinding of the track that created all that chaos.
Liked video 👍🏁🏆
Video idea: best nascar race of each season from 2000s and/or 2010s
The onboard camera shots from Labonte and Johnson show how much more "twisted' Hendrick had their bodies than Gibbs at that moment.
Hendrick in general and especially Chad Knaus did some funky stuff with the cars in that period. I remember the pogoing 48 car at Dover in 2005 and wondering exactly how the fack that made it faster.
Another thing that happened in this race was Jeff Gordon had a piece of concrete come up similar to his Martinsville incident.
it was the filler in the track seem
HE DID IT! THREE IN A ROW, JIMMIE JOHNSON!
4:58 twistedtoes nightmare
Best Worst Race: 2015 Talladega Fall Race. Ending under caution and giving Joey Logano was something else. Especially with the drama and "boys have at it" in the weeks leading up to it. I had the flu that weekend and wasn't sure if it was real or an elaborate fever dream.
This one and the 2011 coke 600 were crazy
