I got to spend the day with my homesteading son today and he was telling me their ups and downs of that tough life, but he would not change it for anything. When he talks about their life and his small sawmill business along with it, his face lights up. Life can be challenging no matter what, but I would much rather be challenged in the country rather than the city.
Little Buggy is so stinkin cute! And i love how she wants to be involved in everything and im so impressed, Ben with the patience you have while shes getting her time on camera. Yes, I love that you don't use baby talk. You allow her in the conversation, and you also allow her independence in the background, too. She has awesome vocabulary learning words like Prosciutto and able to put full sentences together like she does. And she loves to help both of you.
I am soooo happy about your pregnancy. As a mom of six grown children, I am sooo very glad that I had so many children. I can't imagine life without them. They are a blessing just as the Bible says.

It's the way I grew up, but we were called farmers back then!
I remember a winter in the 70s, big ice storm, no electricity. 60 Holsteins to be milked twice/day. Frozen water, frozen everything!
Dad and Mom did all the milking and 220 acres of fieldwork. We had a huge garden, growing and preserving most everything. And 100 chickens! Selling the milk and eggs was the income. I look back, sure it was work, but it was good, satisfying work. I wish i had stayed and taken it over. Good life! ❤❤❤❤❤
Ohh you were blessed ❤. I grew up on a fairly small vineyard/ farm. We were involved in everything also. Would love to be back in that time at my current age lol. Late hubby had absolutely no interest in it 😢👵🏻👩🌾❣️
I was telling my husband about you (I've watched for about 5 years now), and what I see that you have achieved most of all is a healthy family. You are all glowing! You have great relationships with your kids. Their faces light up when they talk about the food you prepare for them. This is a life well lived, and you created it. You are an inspiration!
Best move in our marriage we ever made was leaving city life. And with 7 children homesteading was the best move financially. I've spent most of the last 19 years in my kitchen and I don't regret it
You two have coffee time together to relax and talk, my wife and I took a boring chore and turned it into our time together and it is washing dishes, We took something that was boring by oneself and used it as time with each other and talk the days plans or accomplishments and sometimes old memories. It made the time go fast and satisfying, We have been married for 61 years and knocking on the door of 80 years old.

I just pictured her enthusiastically telling plants to "gwow" for 20 minutes. and it made me smile. I needed that! Also... Buggy talking about "Piscuto" Char-CUTE-rie! I can't take that much adorable.
I cannot eat at a restaurant any longer, after growing, preserving and cooking our meals from scratch every day....restaurant food has to be spectacular to compete . My husband and I pack a thermos of tea, 2 cups and go wandering the forest trails he's created each day....with a basket in case I find wild edibles along the way.

Being a homesteader the work is never done, but the food you put on your table is free from all the additives etc so you know what you and your children are eating. As a child of the 60's my father had an allotment so we always had fresh veggies and eggs from the chickens.
My father ever the romantic bought my mother 2 piglets as a wedding present, 1 for them and the other one to sell!! His gifting never changed!

I like how you guys get everyone involved in working together. You are teaching skills for your children. Almost hundred years ago, men worked together and children saw their uncles, nephews and the boys learned how to be men. Then I see Buggy that she likes working in the kitchen and working with you. Ben. Solving problems on your homestead will help your children be able to learn to solve problems and be good husbands. To think outside the box. I salute to you and your wife of being a great team. Thank you for being an example for others.
If you talk to your children like they are fully able to converse, you get children that communicate like Buggy. As a former Kindergarten Teacher Assistant, it is so wonderful. It is sad the children who have trouble because they are talked at, not talked to. So glad y'all are living the life you dream of. Meg said it so perfect. I’m in my 70’s now, but have been homesteading since my early 20’s. Didn’t have many friends that understood why we lived the life we did when, as they said” u can just go to the grocery store & buy it”🤣. They just didn’t understand how good it feels to sit down to the table & know that everything u r eating u grew & raised. 👍. The sense of pride is fantastic. All the hard work is well worth it. Plus u get the benefit of it being healthier then anything u can buy. Keep going, all of u that r homesteading. I’m so glad that this type of life is making a comeback. 😜. The Hollers r a wonderful family to follow. 🥰

I Love “coffee time” the idea of date night is very important in a marriage but for those of us out there that don’t really care for “town” being on your own property maybe walking along and sipping caffeinated nectar of joy sounds absolutely wonderful
lol I was waiting for Buggy to yell “lay flat bacon” lol. Like she does when she plants seeds, “grow!” She is such a smart girl for her age, because of her wonderful parents.

I remember when the six of you were on the road looking for your homestead. You were in some RV Park and made your entire Thanksgiving meal in your camper. Then you set up table and chairs outside with lights. It was very, very touching. All of you just enjoyed that wonderful moment together. And now you have two more additions!!!!! ❤❤❤❤

Great show today. The love you show each other is wonderful to see. I’m so glad you guys decided to give your marriage a hard reset and do a homestead. Another benefit is I’m afraid to buy anything now. Bio engineered food is almost all we have. I’m 70 but wish I would have done this when is was younger.

I'm 70 and as long as I can get out of bed every day, it's not too late to live the life you enjoy. Yes, every year gardening gets harder but one day in my garden is better that ten days in the city.

Buggy is beyond adorable! She reminds me of my daughter who grew up just like this and is now 12. Buggy could possibly change her mind about the animals though. We don’t have farm animals on our homestead but my daughter was always involved in the process after a deer was killed and we always visited the local farms that we have bought our meat from her whole life. She knows the farmers and she knew the animals that she was eating. And now although she will still eat meat (thank God!) she loves her deer that live on our land too much to even want to restock the freezer with venison.
Yes I love gardening and am active. I was talking about butchering your own meat that I wish I would have done in my younger years.

Long time viewer ... really hit the spot, I needed this. Finally got my land in NC, miserable up north, I just want to go, don't even care about the $$ anymore. Kids are grown, doing great. Time for me I guess, to just do it. TY Hollar family, you give more inspiration than you could ever imagine.

you forgot one very important thing..your children are going to reap the rewards of having their mother and father everyday..not coming home tired and grumpy from a hard days work. most kids are sent off to daycares and babysitters after being in school all day..your family is richer than most families these days..i have been watching for some time now..and still love watching your family daily routine
My maternal grandma had quiet hour after lunch. Each child had to play, nap, read solo! I instituted it with 5 kids i babysat and the kids loved it. Each person needs time to be quiet and slow down. Coffee time is good!

What a good vid!! I’ve been with you guys since California & have watched the transformation from back yard to road trip to homestead! I’m 70 & did about 10 years off grid. It’s hard physical work under unpredictable conditions. What it boils down to is having a good partner. Good communication. Respect for each other. You have that. Carry on❤️

Becky from Acre Homestead came to learn about hog butchering. She posted some photos of her exciting trip with her sister. She speaks so highly of both you and Meg and she loved the. food which you prepared. I have followed Becky for a couple of years now and was delighted to know that she loves your channel as much as I do. She was so impressed by the reverence with which you care for your animals and the meticulous care you show when processing it.

I really like the coffee time idea. My husband and I have started praying for each other each night after going to bed. It is nice praying together and we've been having restful sleep. I would recommend it to everyone.

Buggy's vocabulary is amazing for her age. Your broccoli is beautiful. Our greenhouse is doing well. We are getting cucumbers, tomatoes, all of the herbs, lettuce, kale, spinach, collards and broccoli. We have a heater in our greenhouse and it's worth it to be getting the fresh veggies right now. Unfortunately what we're seeing at the grocery store as far as fresh veggies go- they look pitiful and the price....forgetaboutit! lol. What's the old saying...if your not working then your not productive. Homesteading, farming, gardening, ranching is hard work. The application of this hard work changed with world war 2 when everyone moved to the suburbs. Were producing our vegetables, and buying meat from a farmer who is a friend. We've been maintaining our property, and modifying more of it when we can to continue to grow more food. I would rather work for my food on my property than to work for someone else just for a paycheck, and a life of stress.
HA....we both had a craving for Asian food. This evening I made chicken lettuce wraps and cucumber salad.

Meg, I really admire how you take care of your family by providing home-cooked meals. You are a superstar in the kitchen and I admire the example you’re setting for women. I’d like to encourage you (all homesteading content creators) to ask yourselves this question: If you took RUclips off the table, would it be worth it and could you provide for your family and animals? The truth is that homesteading costs money so you must have income of some kind. I haven’t see one single RUclipsr admit that RUclips is the only reason they can afford to homestead. Another truth is that homesteading is hard work and there’s a reason why people stopped doing it. It is incredibly rewarding, but no matter how much you love it, there are expenses that require your dollars. I just hate to see people get into it and then feel like they were sold a false bill of goods because they can’t figure out how make it work.
There is a book I came across many years ago. Describing exactly the sentiments you’re trying to convey. I think I bought it at Baker Creek in 2010. It’s called The Have More Plan. It really got the gears churning in my head. You’re definitely on the right path, you both look so happy. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments.
I watched you guys from the beginning leaving CA. Traveling around the US. Then settling on East Coast. Growing a garden, then animals. Awesome job..💯💯
Look at the amazing adventures that your family has had. Not just the Hollar family, but any family that has tried any form of self sustainability...even if it doesn't end the way that you thought. You and your children have shared experiences that you wouldn't have had. Trying this lifestyle is NEVER A FAIL. You LIVE and you LEARN. That is life. If you don't step out at least once and expand your horizons, you never truly experience life.

My children lived for a time in a sporting camp...38 miles from the nearest phone pole... generator for electric during the day...homeschooled...flooded in for 3 months...tapped birch and maple trees to make syrup as part if their science, math and natural history classes...16 gallons by the way...they planted gardens.. ground deer meet for burger..it didn't last as long as I would have wanted, but they still treasure the memories. As do I.

Every time I see either one of you working with your children, I picture them as adults themselves, recounting to someone how they have the fondest memories of working side by side with their parents. They say that trauma can have generational impact, well, what you are doing is the exact opposite...positively impacting your children, their children and so on. The. Most. Important. Work. One. Does. Well done you two.
When we moved to our homestead I worked for two years and made the decision to retire and homestead full time. Started with chickens and then goats. Went to you tube U and learned to make cheese and soap. Put in a garden raised a bunch of veggies. Then made the full leap and now have raised and processed four cows and two pigs. I've also processed a dozen are so chickens.
I wouldn't trade my life now for any 9-5! And I am mentally and physically healthier. God Bless!

Brassicas mellow and sweeten in cold temps. We always left Brussel sprouts on the stems through December in zone 6. Picked them in the snow.❄⛄⛄❄ So sweet!

The main thing is the homestead life is what you both want. I have a homesteaders heart and would love to have a homestead, however, it is not my husband’s desire at all, so I watch homesteaders like y’all instead. One can not do all the work homesteading requires all by themselves. It takes many hands and a mate that is willing to share in that homestead dream. I want to add to what Meg said that growing and cooking your meals from scratch you don’t have all them added chemicals fast food has in it. Keep living the good homestead life. You’re living my dream and I love watching how each day unfolds. 😊
the lady in the kitchen in these videos is the best cook of all the ladies on these type shows. She has style and grace and is also easy on the eye.
Soy Sauce Recipe Substitute
1 cup Beef Broth can be homemade
1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tablespoon Blackstrap Molasses
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/4 teaspoon Ground Ginger
1 teaspoon Salt
Instructions
In a saucepan, combine the beef broth, cider vinegar, and molasses. Add in the garlic, ginger, and salt. Mix well. Let the entire mixture simmer on the stovetop over a medium-low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes or until the sauce begins to reduce. The best flavor is when you've let it reduce to about half of it's original volume. Store the finished sauce in an air-tight container

I think its wonderful that you have coffee time. My husband and I have been married 45 years it will be 46 yrs in March. We have always went on dates. When our children were small once a month we went on dates. Now my children are grown and married and they go on dates also. Just anything to have time for yourselves. One day the children will be gone and you have grown apart. We still go on dates sometimes. Now we have the house to ourselves. I think it's wonderful and keep it up.
I'm pretty sure that most gardeners wear the sign "Will work for food" because we know the satisfaction that comes from it, plus all of the other benefits
My daughter was around Brett's age when she bought the groucho glasses. Love it+ Mom and Dad do need time. My husband and I always took around 15 minutes by ourselves when he got home from work for mom and dad time. I think country living, no matter the acreage, is peaceful for the soul. I don't think it matters how much you grow or raise, get a little piece of land and see how your soul will find peace.+

I think the word you're looking for is 'rewarding ' you're life and work is rewarding.
Meg with the amount of cooking you do, you need a dishwasher. Every couple needs time alone. When my grandchildren were young my daughter and son-in-law would load up the kids and go get coffee and go for a drive. They still carry on that tradition only now the kids are grown and they go alone. That communication is so important for a healthy marriage.
Get some frost blanket. A couple of layers would have probably protected the winter veggies for the odd frigid nights.
Meg is sooooo... right! The work doesn't stop! But the work doesn't stop you!

I know in our first 3 houses when the kids were young I worked, my husband worked but I still came home every day and because I worked less hours I took care of the yard but I also cooked all our meals so that we sat down as a family at the dinner table. I think people don’t sit down at the dinner table anymore and talk and discusslike they used to everything is fast fast fast and especially fast food. I think it makes a big difference just that you know 45 minutes or an hour sitting at the dinner table discussing with your kids their day and your husband or your wife their day it doesn’t seem like a lot but it is a lot to the relationship of the whole family.

Great points. It is hard work. Also look at what you have the opportunity to teach your children. What they are exposed to is priceless. 😊
My hubby and I love sushi. But to spend 80.00 on a sushi dinner out was just getting way too expensive. So I decided I was going to teach myself how to make it. So after making it a few times. I have gotten pretty darn good at it. And we find the sushi I make is so much more filling than the ones we got at the sushi restaurant. And I really enjoy making different kinds. I use my home canned salmon, tuna, pork, chicken, etc. And use all kinds of different sauces to make really unique kinds. Even made spam sushi! It's really good too. I make all our meals from scratch because 10 years ago, I found out that I am highly allergic to gluten and dairy. So I have had to recreate all my recipes that we love to gf/df ones. And when I cook for others. They can't tell. I even made sushi for my hubbys brother and wife and their 2 friends. They were so impressed! I made 14 rolls, all different kinds. And there was none left. So anyone out there that thinks you can't recreate something that you love from a restaurant. Think again. You can, and you might even like it better!

Love your lifestyle! Wish I would have chosen it decades ago. Do what we can now but in our 70’s.Have chickens and many gardens and a new large plastic greenhouse that my hubby put up in Oct. so this garden season is extra exciting to look forward to. Have a good evening❤️

If you put frost cloth over the plants in the greenhouse it may save the ones that haven’t got bit with frost/ cold yet. Sorry about the cauliflower. Arugula may come back if you cut the wilt off. The broccoli looked great! Growing your own food is a ton of work but very well worth it all in the end. I looked at the price of hog grower & chicken feed for layers & meat birds last week, couldn’t believe the price! Wow! 50 lbs cost what I use to pay for 4 80 lb bags of feed for hogs & chickens.
AND I LOVE that framed map on your wall. I remember Ben and Buggy making the frame and thought YA that’s cool- preserve the map and hanging it - 👍 We had to dig the map out if we had homework for latitude and longitude- I notice it every video 😊. Just looks like it belongs there or something 🤷♀️
I did this same thing yesterday, and was telling my cousin, it's a blessing to get dumplings from your house instead of a restaurant! Made my own ramen , with dumlings on the side w/dipping sauce Tommorrow will be pepper steak, Lo mein and dumplings

I've been watching your videos ever since you were on the road leaving California. I keep watching your videos because you not only show us what you're doing but you also take the time and explain how and why it's done. Thanks for going out your way to really help those of us who's still learning.
My grandchildren call me Nonna, not because we are Italian but because I love how they respect their food. They are artisans of everything … olives, grapes, cheese, meats, etc and they don’t rush things. You all are doing GREAT

Appreciate the video. I already know I enjoy that work and am so struggling to try to be able to afford to get started. I feel so stuck in a life I dislike and am sad when I have to leave the 4 chickens I have in the city on the 7x12 'plot' of dirt I have telling them that I have to go back to me "real life" -- when really THEY are my real life that I just can't find a way to really live.
Can’t eat takeout, makes me feel really bad. I cook from scratch every day. I think you guys are doing a wonderful job! God bless
