Oof, I feel you: this video was initially a lot longer, but I cut some of the stuff down to make everything digestible. Didn't want to scare people away with a 45 minute long runtime ;) Glad you enjoyed the video though.
It took me over 2 years to notice how Clout Cobain summarizes the grey part of the album. "Watch these hoes when they say they want a lot of me" is in reference to Super Saiyan which is loaded with sexual imagery. "I don't know who's the one that wants to plot on me" covers Switch it Up, where he discusses his friends turning on him at a moment's notice, as well as Mad I Got It where the final verse is literally someone so jealous of him that they're willing to commit murder. "I stay low so my demons don't acknowledge me" references Sirens which are flying creatures in greek mythology. Finally "when i go i know death don't do apologies" ties these to Clout Cobain, where as a result of distrust of women, his friends, people less fortunate that him who may act on their jealousy, and the entire institution of his country which is designed to prevent him from escaping poverty as an African American, it overwhelms him to the point of considering suicide. This is the point at which he realises that no amount of money or fame can truly allow him to escape from his problems, ie his black balloons, the greatest being the death of his brother. Denzel is my favorite rapper btw and this video was so dope, keep up the great work :)
as a man who experienced sexual assault, i was casually listening to this while in the gym and my mind immediacy raced towards traumatic thoughts. however, i really appreciate that there are men now trying to be open about this topic.

I am the biggest zel fan to ever live, I didn't know people thought it was actually constructed like light, gray, dark. He said it in an interview that he was in a terrible state when recording black ballons.
RIGHT? I think it's pretty evident through the lyrics, so the context isn't even all that necessary to see that Light has the darkest content on the album
This video is very underrated I remember listening to taboo when it first came out and listened to it over and over again trying to understand it. Fun fact: On Sirens when he says "The Revolution will not be televised" it’s an interpolation of the first ever "rap" song: The Revolution will not be televised
After watching this video, I can fully see how and why Denzel would appreciate a band like Rage Against the Machine, let alone do a cover of Bulls on Parade.

Great analysis to one of my fav albums ever! Denzel is one of the most creative, raw, and talented artists of our generation, he deserves all the respect he gets
Oh my theater nerd side loves the Hamlet motiffs. It jibes well with the paranoia of Switch It Up, because Hamlet is a play where everyone is watching and spying on each other and specifically Hamlet himself. In The Blackest Ballon, Denzel's brother calling to him parallels Hamlet's father's ghost calling out to his son - for Vengeance. Oh and Ophelia's suicide! Which plays off Denzel's - because Ophelia's self-annihilation is an act of madness, yes. But also autonomy! It's a way in which the character takes ownership of her own fate not unlike how Denzel frames his own. GAH! This album is so good.
The ending lyrics for vengeance i think could go 3 ways. 1. suicide, he is smiling about loading the bullet and excited to finally end the pain and suffering that he has endured, "gonna catch you" referring to himself that he will catch himself from falling deeper. 2. egodeath, not exactly suicide but silencing himself because of what he said was 'taboo' and shouldn't be talked about since he could be in trouble for it. 3. killing those who have wronged him, his black balloons to finally rid himself of toxicity and evil surrounding him in his life.
Just started the video and I already appreciate you looking at the lyrics. I've seen most of the reviews and I always wondered why nobody brought up the dark lyrics. Even though the "Light side" had smooth and feel good lyrics it was like the beat and vocals drowned out the negative lyrics to where people forget about them altogether. The dark lyrics seemed to be looked over just because it was called Light side. I also noticed that the dark lyrics hit at issues that were more societal in nature, while the "Dark side" sounded more aggressive in the lyrics I could argue that the dark lyrics hit less then on here then on the first part looking at them. However vice versa could also be stated with the lyrics on the dark side. I will say that the instrumentation is how Denzel views the world and the lyrics are how Denzel navigates the world around him.
Denzel curry is one of the greatest rappers i have ever heard if he was born sooner he qould be mainstream but i enjoy his multiple music background this era gives him
When I first heard this album, it was hard to piece together the narrative, but I rocked with the sound of this album so much! It’s mix or dark themes with Erie rhythms that still get me moving is facinating. It’s sort of like the musical embodiment of a chaotic end to the world movie, where everything slowly gets worse and crazier, but by the end it leaves you with a protagonist you can latch onto. To put it simply, the world around Denzel is crumbling, but by the end he finds a way to prevail, but leaving you questioning if he’s anywhere what the same person. It’s truly a masterpiece of dark and chaotic storytelling presented in a erotic soundscape that still hits your ears in a way that gets you excited. It hits many emotions, from mellow tracks, to synthy swaying, to high octane bangers, or pure horror core vibes. It’s so dynamic and borderline random at times, but that’s what makes it so interesting. On top of that, the fact there are so many way to interpret every line of this record is a positive to me. It leaves a lot to figure out and piece together, and you may need to listen a few times to get it, but because it sounds so good you really don’t mind. And once you get, it all just clicks. Any part you might have thought were weird or didn’t make sense, now come clear to you. Every time I listen to this album, I find a new thing I live about it. Every beat does a great job at conveying the emotions Denzel wants you to feel. His writing, energy, cadences, flows, and voice inflections change so much, but he makes all of them sound so good and work into the theme of the album. Every feature is so perfectly calculated to whatever song they get on, and always to do their best to step far into the world dense creates. Every. Single, thing. HITS! If it wasn’t clear already, I fucking love this album. Great analysis, you helped clear up some details I missed. I can tell how much of a fan you are and how much breaking down this album meant to you. Great job dude!

Bipolsrism is a huge taboo in rap/ music as a whole. Ironically, some of the best albums were made when the artist had suffered from bipolar disorder, since there is a correlation between bipolarism and creativity. Taboo, Tpab, Mbdtf
Had to watch the analysis a second time since it 's so good. Can't believe such good content came from a channel with only 6k subs, I really hope you get the success you deserve. You definitely earned that sub and that like
Great video, taboo is my favorite album of 2018 and I've listened to it countless times and you get this work as well as i always have when literally nobody else could seemingly get it. So fuckin great, thank you❤
In sirenz the line "revolution will not be televised" actually is referring to the poem/song by the same name by Gil Scott-Heron. The poem's main message is essentially that the revolution won't be something you can watch on the television, because black people will be in the street looking for a brighter day. this further links with the idea's in vengeance of a violent revolution being the only viable option in denzels eyes
Hard to believe this is not done on a channel with 100k+ subs with 10m+ views...keep on the grind, production qualitys real good fam...Nice breakdown btw
yea im not gonna pretend im some kind of genius who "got" the album but i've heard it several dozen times, it's one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, and i've never really been satisfied with any of the breakdowns of it i've heard until now. Like you said, it's like they're all missing the point. I couldn't put my finger on it until i watched this but i think you nailed it. the way it all builds to black metal terrorist is nothing short of creative, as the taboo goes from internal to external and he seeks to change the world he views rather than his worldview. solid breakdown, great video
I’m so sad it took this long to find this channel, to start really listening to Denzel Curry and to really understand Taboo. Instant Subscribe and like a year later 🔥
My favorite show i ever saw was Zel in Charlotte on the 1st anniversary of x passing. It was unreal. Felt like a spiritual experience for all of us, even Zel got teary eyed playing look at me at the end. He let me sing Sirens with him it was so great!
I can only imagine. X and Zel were really close to my understanding, so I can only imagine what a performance that must have been. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see him live some day
@@themanicpineapple8772 yeah they lived together at one point, Zel talks about it in some interview i forget where. it always hurts to lose a friend, so it was poetic that I met one of my best friends that day when Zel brought him on stage to do X's song with him (think it was sippin tea in your hood they did) and I bought my man Jake some water when he got off stage. Hope you get to see him some day dude! This video was so good I watched it twice to show it to my dad.
I'm a little late because I wanted to listen to the album before I watched and I'm glad I did. You lay it out the narrative really effectively and give a pretty sensible interpretation that's cohesive and rock solid. And the visual presentation is next level shit, this video's aesthetic is insanely distinct and on-point from beginning to end and I think seeing editing styles that are this specifically tailored to the subject matter of the topic in question more would be a fantastic thing. As well as just comprehensive analysis videos about albums, it's a woefully underexplored niche and I think that you've just proven that the video essay is an ideal format for it. You and Serena hit it out of the park with this one, my guy. This might be my favorite video you've ever done. Good work!
This is one of the best videos i've ever watched. I love Denzel Curry, and Taboo is my favourite album of all time. I grab bits of info from the lyrics I hear and piece together what I can, but this video really just puts into perspective the genius behind the music. Denzel is so clearly one of the greatest rappers, and in my opinion maybe the best rapper period, but that's down to opinion.
TA13OO was in my top 5 fav albums of all time, but after this vid, it's without a doubt my favourite album Good god, you've done an incredible job on this video
The coke could be a reference to the light-when he has the coke on his face Grey-sort of coming back to his senses Black-he has woke up and has rose up to fight these norms.
When he explains the way people are ignoring all the problems in society is very similar to the way he described “melting eyes”. He says in melt session #1 “being aware that’s my definition of melt” as well as in an interview that melting eyes is becoming aware of every fault in the world. This way the theme of melting eyes is very similar to the things he discussed in taboo which is cool considering they are seperate albums from about 4 years apart
One year late, but thank you for doing this video. Denzel's gotta be my favorite rapper and I'm glad someone has finally dissected this album CORRECTLY.
U also missed how in the chorus for black balloons it says when they pop the pain will stop. And in the end or clout cobain when he kills himself, the balloon pops in the music video. This alludes to the pain will only stop with suicide. Maybe this is due to all of the troubles he talks about on the record. Great analysis tho and easily the best one of I’ve seen
great analysis! just got taboo as my first ever vinyl, always knew it was my fav zel album but this video taught me a lot. can't wait to see this man on tour in a few months :')
About your remark on Denzel's makeup in Vengeance... It's a reference to Ichi the killer, a character from a manga. He's as unhinged as Joker, it what this character portrays is total freedom from social convention and lifestyle, living as a hitman and as a pariah of society, but attaining true freedom

So fuckin great, thank you❤
This video got me into denzel curry last year and now he’s in my top 3, thank you bro
Denzel curry said in a recent interview that super saiyan superman didn’t fit in with the album
It's kinda nice having the artist validate this analysis in few different ways ;)
this video rules holy shit ive watched this so many times
Thank you so much. I put so much time into this one
Great analysis!! I love your content bro!! Can’t wait for another album review
Another analysis review*
Many thanks :) Glad you enjoyed the video
In sirenz the line "revolution will not be televised" actually is referring to the poem/song by the same name by Gil Scott-Heron. The poem's main message is essentially that the revolution won't be something you can watch on the television, because black people will be in the street looking for a brighter day. this further links with the idea's in vengeance of a violent revolution being the only viable option in denzels eyes
Amazing video man, got into the deep aspects and portraid it really well. keep it up!
Hard to believe this is not done on a channel with 100k+ subs with 10m+ views...keep on the grind, production qualitys real good fam...Nice breakdown btw
Thanks yo :) That means a lot
@@themanicpineapple8772 welcome
This album is way over everyones head. This album is genius
yea im not gonna pretend im some kind of genius who "got" the album but i've heard it several dozen times, it's one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, and i've never really been satisfied with any of the breakdowns of it i've heard until now.
Awesome video, got even more insight into one of the greatest albums ever and my personal favourite.
brrrrooooo what a nice video i just discovered you channel and man, i have so much respect, keep up the good work
I’m so sad it took this long to find this channel, to start really listening to Denzel Curry and to really understand Taboo. Instant Subscribe and like a year later 🔥
I love video essays on music
Man this video essay was amazing. Really made me reflect on things my loved ones and I have gone through. Thank you truly.
Really liked that you used the FlyLo production. Genius.
A bit off topic, but I absolutely love your mascot! IT IS SO CUTE!!!
definitely the most slept on artist
Good work!
Thank you so much yo :) We really put our all into this one, so I`m glad you enjoyed it so much
Amazing interpretation! Helps a lot with understianding this masterpiece of an album
TA13OO was in my top 5 fav albums of all time, but after this vid, it's without a doubt my favourite album
Good god, you've done an incredible job on this video
The coke could be a reference to the light-when he has the coke on his face
Grey-sort of coming back to his senses
Black-he has woke up and has rose up to fight these norms.
That's a cool way of looking at it for sure :) Clever observation
dude, astonishing video. this was really interesting to watch and you really made me think about the album in a new light, it makes a lot more sense.
Really glad I found this video, wonderful job!
Awesome review by an amazingly underrated artist. "People sleeping hard on me and IM THE HARDEST IN THE BANK"
On first listen, I wasn't sure if the girl from ta13oo was Denzel. I thought it made sense cuz of MMESYF.
definitely had to drop a sub after this. you really confirmed my thoughts about this album. defo a top 10 album for me
The album is a magnificent work of art, and I'm glad this video gave you even deeper insight into it. More Hiphop related videos to come ;)
@@themanicpineapple8772 thanks man! Will definitely tune in
Watched whole video and I already figured a lot of this out but showed me some new things about the album
I just found out this video and I have to say you made an excellent video. I’m really impress by it
You made appreciate This album more than I did
One year late, but thank you for doing this video. Denzel's gotta be my favorite rapper and I'm glad someone has finally dissected this album CORRECTLY.
Thanks yo--that really means a lot. This one was a labour of love
bruh this was great, i love this album. it’s nice seeing someone actually explain it
I love the whole album but i wish the hook for Clout Cobain just played once every time instead of twice because it gets old quick. But it's so catchy
Ohhh my god, that was a crazy analysis, thank you for making this oh my god
you should do a video on Imperial, his best album
About your remark on Denzel's makeup in Vengeance... It's a reference to Ichi the killer, a character from a manga. He's as unhinged as Joker, it what this character portrays is total freedom from social convention and lifestyle, living as a hitman and as a pariah of society, but attaining true freedom
This video needs more attention great video
This is the most underrated video essay channel I’ve ever seen
Comments like these motivate me to work even harder on my scripts :) Thanks a bunch
@@themanicpineapple8772 the algorithm will get you that push and you definitely have the talent to keep the viewer retention. Keep it up!
lil late but i appreciate you, i love this album more than i could explain and you took every single word from my mind.
This breakdown is nuts
This is an amazing video dude. I am writing my essay on this album and this video seriously helps and is just a very entertaining and informative video.
how is this underrated channel actually the goat
Yeah, this was a fantastic interpretation. Well done!! Looking forward to your future content.
my best album & artist of all time, many thanks dude.
You breaking down one of my favorite rap albums, Taboo is honestly amazing, Great review.
great video! just discovered this curry gem and loved to hear your thoughts about him
i think the best part of taboo is everyone i know has inpterpreted it differently and i can listen to it in multiple contexts
yup. Id say this is probably the best TA13OO analysis there is out right now.
Thanks :) It shan't be the last rap analysis video on this channel, I assure you
Bros dropped the greatest analysis ever
