On the occasion of MAHASHIVARATRI 2024, I share with you a mantra for SHIVA, the “Mahamrityunjaya Mantra”
MAHAMRITYUNJAYA MANTRA
ॐ त्र्य॑म्बकं यजामहे सु॒गन्धिं॑ पुष्टि॒वर्ध ॑नम्।
उ॒र्वा॒रु॒कमि॑व॒ बन्ध॑नान् मृ॒त्योर्मु॑क्ष ीय॒ माऽमृता॑॑त् ।।
oṃ tryámbakaṃ yajāmahe sughandhíṃ puṣṭivardhánam |
urvārukamivabandhánān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt ||
Om, We meditate on the three-eyed Absolute Reality
That permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance.
May we be bestowed with liberation from death for the sake of immortality,
Even as the cucumber is severed from its bondage to the creeper.
MAHASHIVARATRI 2024
The Great Night of “Shiva”, also known as Mahashivaratri, occupies a prominent place in the Indian spiritual panorama. The importance of this night lies in its potential to catalyze profound spiritual elevation.
Each year, this celebration constitutes a special moment of fasting, prayer and meditation. Its date, determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar, corresponds to the day preceding the new moon. It generally falls around February-March in the Gregorian calendar.
Every fourteenth day of the lunar cycle, or the day before the new moon, is dedicated to Shiva. Among the twelve Shivratri (night of Shiva) which punctuate the year, that of February-March, called Mahashivratri (maha = great), has a particular significance. On this specific night, it is said that cosmic alignment promotes a natural rise of energy in the human organism, propelling everyone towards spiritual heights.
