- The Mahamrityumjaya Mantra or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (Sanskrit: महामृत्युंजय मंत्र or महामृत्युञ्जय मन्त्र, mahāmṛtyuṃjaya mantra or mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra, lit. "Great Death-conquering Mantra"), also known as the Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse of the Rigveda (RV 7.59.12).
This mantra is addressed to Lord Shiva for warding off untimely death.[9] It is also chanted while smearing Vibhuti over various parts of the Body and utilised in Japa or Homa (havan) to get desired results. While its energy protects and guides the initiates a mantra re-links consciousness to its deeper and more abiding nature and repetition of the mantra constitutes Japa, the practice of which develops concentration that leads to a transformation of awareness. Whereas the Gayatri Mantra is meant for purification and spiritual guidance, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is meant for healing rejuvenation and nurturance.[10]
The true meaning is as follows:
Tryambakam: The three eyed lord (Shiva) who sees what we can see but who also sees what we can not see. Hence 3 eyed.
Yajamahe: Yajanam is invocation; I invoke
Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanama: Increase my good vasanas (not of material aspects like gold, money,sex, anger, the 6 enemies etc.)
Urvarukam iva bandhanaan mrityor mukshiya ma mritaat: When I die my soul should leave the body as easily ( without attachment) as the cucumber falls from its plant.

If I'd met Anandamayi Ma back in the days those photos were taken....and who knows? I may have in another life....I don't know how I would have reacted. I think her serene, otherworldly countenance would have stirred inexplicable emotions in me. But at the same time, it would have been a catharsis like no other experience. Le Maha Mantra Mrityun Jaya, plus connu sous le nom de Tryambakam, est l’un des plus beaux, et surtout des plus puissants, Mantras sanskrits.
Dédié à Shiva, on le considère à la fois comme un Mantra d’éveil, de purification karmique, d’immortalité et de guérison aux trois niveaux : mental, émotionnel et physique.
Vieux de plus de 3000 ans, puisqu’on le retrouve mentionné dans le Yajurveda, un des plus anciens recueils de Mantras, d’invocations et de rites de l’époque védique, le Mantra Tryambakam s’adresse à Shiva, le bienveillant destructeur d’illusion.
Autrement dit, à la Conscience. Tryambakam veut dire « trois yeux ».
Vous vous en doutez, de ces trois yeux c’est le troisième qui fait la différence !
Les deux premiers yeux représentent la dualité : le passé et le futur, le sujet et l’objet, etc.
Le troisième œil, lui, est celui de la Sagesse, de la Vision spirituelle, de l’Unité.
Par conséquent, réciter ce Mantra revient à prier Shiva (tryambakam) d’ouvrir notre troisième œil.
Et c’est également pour cette raison que l’exotérisme hindou peint et dépeint souvent Shiva en train de détruire le mal d’un simple coup de troisième œil.
Ce fameux « mal », c’est naturellement l’illusion !
Et, plus précisément dans ce Mantra, l’illusion à l’origine de la peur fondamentale de l’ego : la peur de la mort.
Ce Mantra est donc un « Mantra moksha », un Mantra de libération, un Mantra d’immortalité.
En d’autres termes, il est censé vous aider à réaliser la conscience qui n’est jamais née ni ne mourra.
Par extension, il est aussi thérapeutique.
