I did this, too. Here are my tips from the current version: ・If you're OK with taking advantage of glitches, utilize 'Super Seaglide'. Speedrunners access this by flooding a normal compartment; it's slower but easier to do it by flooding a Moonpool. Build the Moonpool away from any other structures, power it, then add windows until you start to get cracks. Once you see the water level inside rising, you can take away the windows as long as you don't repair the cracks. Powering it keeps a small pocket of air at the ceiling. To use, swim up into it, top off your air by bobbing against the ceiling, and then exit down and out using the Seaglide - you'll be going super fast! Powered interior fixtures like Fabricators and Battery Chargers will work fine, and you can even grow surface plants in the flooded space. Super Seaglide will remain active until you breach the surface or enter a habitat; swimming carefully to a depth of 0 meters will get you surface air. ・To get air where you want it without building a hab, plant Brain Coral in Exterior Planters (get plans from the Floating Island, or from in wrecks). To dive deep, I made a chain of planters with Brain Coral and Creepvine Seeds. When the Creepvine is fully grown, it shines out in yellow light visible at a distance. This saved me from having to memorize routes or build tons of beacons - I just swim towards the light. Stacking multiple Brain Coral will let you refill your tanks faster; multiple Creepvines makes more distinct light. Of course, you don't need to carry all that at once - 2 Titanium to build the planter, one of each plant to seed it, then do other things while they grow. Go back later and replant cuttings from the adult flora to fill it out. If you're using Super Seaglide, this has the added benefit of letting you refill air without dropping speed. ・You can also plant Gel Pods or Bulb Bushes for exterior food and water. For Gel Pods, plant an adult one, cut it once for a seed, then take the adult back into your inventory. When you pick up the adult, it restores to full 'health', so you can cut it as many times as you need by repeating this process. ・The Seaglide has a constant speed, no matter what you're carrying. Ordinarily, tugging extra O₂ tanks slows you down incrementally - but not while the Seaglide is active. If you know you're going to some... structure... where there is air, you can make an extra long trip by bringing a spare O₂ tank and switching it out while swimming. Just remember to switch between tanks once you make it to the air - the used one will not refill if it is not equipped. Swim Charge Fins will also recharge a Seaglide while you're using it, with no loss of speed...until you switch to another tool, that is. ・The Lost River is the deepest region where you'll find plenty of Limestone for Titanium; there is a little loose in the Inactive Lava Zone, but starting at the Ghost Tree it's almost all in drillable form. I love building up a base next to the Ghost Tree: It's pretty, there are no predators, and it's got Limestone, Sandstone, and Shale. You know, come to think of it, Leviathans just aren’t really problems. I’ve been grabbed by reapers in my sea moth a ton of times, but I always get away. I can count on one hand how many times my sea moth has died. Or, like, my cyclops has been attacked a ton, but the only time I lost it was when I drove it out into the void.
With the extra ion cubes at the sanctuaries, the Prawn was unnecessary, and I'm going to say that using the Cyclops as a big expensive fabricator doesn't count. :P

@@zackerymoyano the challenge isn't to complete the game without driving a vehicle, it's to complete the game without using a vehicle. That is sufficiently vague that we could all argue in a circle forever. Or we could just not.
I did this run before I even saw this video. I did a hardcore world, and didn't *pilot* a single vehicle (I say pilot, as it is necessary to *build* the cyclops and the rocket. I wouldn't really count launching the rocket as piloting a vehicle). I can testify, though, most of the time that I spent in the run was traveling back and forth, ferrying items from my main base to my relays positioned deep in the lost river and lava zone. Fortunately, I was able to get enough Ion cubes from facilities and caches to beat the game *and* make an ion battery for my seaglide. But other than those differences, it was pretty much the same as you saw in the video.
I figured out how to solve the super long loading screen when starting a new game: Initially I had my game installed on my HDD, just a normal hard drive disk. When I reinstalled it onto my M.2 NVME SSD, it loaded much much faster. If you guys have an SSD and Subnautica is not on there, I'd highly recommend it. It cuts down loading times very very significantly.

This sounds like an awesome challenge! As a player who LOVES Subnautica and would say by this point, I’m really good at it and would say it’s one of the games I know+play best, this(and the no base run especially) sound like challenges I’d love to try. I think I’ve pretty much done no base runs before but I could be wrong and might have actually built some but to make sure I’ll still give it a try someday. Death run sounds fun (excruciating) too, like survival in Fallout 4, another favorite :))
I am typing this before I watch the video: NO it is impossibe, why? You NEED the cyclops to get the shield upgrade for your rocket. (Wich is crafted in the cyclops) Is everything else except for the upgrade? YES. This had been done multiple times by world record runners, because they use extra crafted oxy tanks in stead of vehicles. Edit: he's going back and building bases all the time, but there is a possibility to reach the sea emperor with 3 tanks (2 spare).
I did this a while ago, just as a personal challenge. Two things that made it WAY easier were super sea glide(a glitch that makes the seaglide much faster) and keeping 2 oxygen tanks on me, and swapping them out to double my air supply. I didn't die nearly as much or need so many bases everywhere for oxygen, it took about 10 hours iirc, but I wasn't going for maximum speed. Still though, good job, having done the run myself I know how tedious it is... Just so you know though, you don't need the prawn suit, there are more cubes around the map. And it sucks that you have to build a cyclops just for the fabricator...
I know that this video is an older one, but I just did a bit of a speed run last night. Went in through the Bulb zone with 2 High Cap/3 Regular tanks, Rebreather, Scanner, Fins, and 2 Purple Tabelets. Went all the way down into the Lava zone and into the Geothermal base. Got the Blue tablet and Ion technology. Found a single Ion Cube, which I used to open the Teleporter into the big weapon base. Now I have a quick way into the Geothermal plant and can pick up Kyanite to build another Blue Tablet. Once that is done, I will get the Reinforced suit from the wreckage in the Bulb zone, get my tanks all together and go cure the disease. Then I can play/explore, basically from the beginning, without having to deal with warpers.
@@thedoomtrainer8292 I found 2 on my first run without even knowing what a time capsule is. I also wasn't looking for them, I was just vibing at the Aurora.
@@TPguard5 if he went to the different alien caches (idk if he did or not, he did the one in the lost river but idk about the others) he could’ve gotten enough Ion cubes
SO FUN FACT ABOUT VEHICLE DEPTH LIMITS The water that constitutes the majority of the human body isn't compressed by depth while you're diving like air is What this means is that theoretically speaking with big enough supply of special gasses (oxygen is toxic at depth and the nitrogen in the air we breathe becomes narcotic) and enough exposure protection from the cold, there's actually no limit to what a person can physically dive to Submarines on the other hand which are basically submerged pockets of air, are compressed by the water at depth; meaning you can only go so far with them before the hull starts to crack
prawn is very optional, there are pleanty more cubes around the map. the seaglide is also optional if you choose to count it as a vehicle, it just makes the run a lot more tedious..
You can build a base down there powered by thermal plants for oxygen you can also carry multiple oxygen tanks to expand your range without needing to refill. I have personally beat subnutica with zero vehicle use (other than the cyclops as a crafting station) and every single competitive speedrun doesn't bother with the prawn, so I can tell you with absolute certainty that the prawn suit is optional. Im not saying the prawn suit is not useful, just that it is not required to beat the game.
In speedrunning, we technically complete the game without any vehicles. You don't need the prawn suit to finish the game. There are enough ion cubes in alien caches in the world to build multiple rockets. The cyclops however is necessary. That is true.
I just completed my own no-vehicle run, my main takeaway was that vehicles hinder my progress more than helping it. The vehicles take so much time and effort to build and upgrade, if all you're trying to do is finish the game then I honestly will continue to do my runs without vehicles. I ended up building a few bases, I think 4. 1 as my main base in the blood kelp zone, 1 in the Lost River for scanning and obtaining nickel, and crystaline sulfur, 1 in the inactive lava zone, and one that I would pack up and take with me for scanning. all of these bases comprised of a multipurpose room, bioreactor, and scanner, as well as fabricators when needed and storage when needed. all in all I found that the lack of vehicles shocked me with how little extra difficulty the run added. as long as you pack an extra o2 tank, the risk of drowning is honestly very low. just make sure you know where you are going or what you are going out to do before you set off. I'm still pretty new to the game and wasn't really trying to do this as a speedrun and this was only my 4th run but it ended up being 7 hours and 45 minutes, by far my fastest run.
I haven't finished the game, and can just started the video - I can already answer. Yes (IF #1 you can endure it, and #2 someone was nice enough to put a Cyc Shield Generator in a time capsule you come across) Otherwise, no. You can't get everything you need w/o a Cyclops. if you build an air-base every swim distance of about 1000m. That includes vertical And horizontal, but not anything else that slows you down, like forced turns. By the time you're making 10 stops for air along the way to the lower layers, knowing you'll need ot make 3+ trips to get enough there to build all you need (can't drill those nice titanium deposits w/o a prawn)... you'll need some theraputic medications to stay sane.
I always wanted to try a Subnautica run without vehicles (except for the ending, of course). I was planning on using exterior growbeds with brain corals for oxygen and gel sacks for food; building them along the way. One day, maybe
Every time I finish the game, I always put the 3 tablets (purple, orange, blue), the enzyme, the BBQ blade and the Cyclops Shield Generator in the Time Capsule 😊
I wonder if it gets accepted in to the pool of time capsules. I know they block screenshots from some areas but they've never said if there's a limit on certain items.
Wait a second technically you can’t beat the game without using vehicles because the Neptune rocket would be considered a vehicle and that’s the only way to beat the game So technically no you can’t beat the game without vehicles
its always interesting to see how other people play. like "am i doing anything wrong?" sort of curiosity, and while i think this episode was undeniably skewed to having way more "bases" (because they only really ever had like one room and a solar panel/ heat generator) its cool seeing so many in a small way. while in my own game i basically only ever build one. or like maybe two if i ever want to transfer to maybe some superdeep part as a sort of play at being a deep sea researcher. with the cyclops being a bit of a roaming base.
Without looking at your sub count I would think you would have at least 100k subs, this is a really good video and I don’t know why you don’t have more subs
I think it mostly boils down to me not being great at spreading my videos around and also working on stuff that takes way too much time to post consistently. I appreciate it though!
The first thing that came into my mind when I saw no vehicles in the title (unless you are doing a speedrun of the game that is and still take your time to explore and do stuff), was "man I'd built so many outdoor growbeds with braincorals so I wouldn't need a base every few hundred metres" and now that I'm done with the video I'm left wanting to try that myself since you didn't use any... (o.o )
A vehicle is defined as "a thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car, truck, or cart." This means the lifepod is a vehicle. It transported you from the ship to the surface. Seaglide also fits this definition. So both didn't work. But still, not much you could do. Good video!
I agree that the seaglide isn’t a vehicle, vehicles are what you make with the mobile vehicle bay. But The Neptune Escape Rocket IS a vehicle ;) Also we’ll say the prawn suit was a one time thing and the cyclops you didn’t even drive.
I mean technically the lifeboat and aurora are vehicles, so is the rocket If you don't count those, it is possible but incredibly unlikely. For ion cubes, just either don't activate the teleporters or go to the supply caches. As for the cyclops shield module, it is technically possible to get without the vehicle if you find it in a time capsule. However, this would take a serious amount of luck to do. Still that would be interesting if that happened
You can actually complete this without vehicles: In total you need 6 purple tablets and there are 5 you can get for free (4 on Enforcement Platform Island, 1 on Floating Island) In total you need 8 Ion Cubes to beat the story (1 for incubator, 1 for Incubator teleporter, 1 for 6th purple tablet, 1 for 2nd Blue tablet, 4 to make the 4 Ion batteries for the 2 Ion Power Cells for the Neptune) and you can get about 5-6/6-7 in total from the Enforcement Platform, Disease Facility and in a cave in the Emperor’s containment room) By the time you build the 6th Purple Tablet, 2nd Blue Tablet and power both the Incubator and the teleporter you will have 2-3 or something Ion cubes left which isnt enough for the Neptune To counter this you can simply build a 7th Purple Tablet and access Sanctuary B which is next to Lifepod 2 for an extra 4 Ion cubes which will give you enough for the 4 Ion Batteries to make the 2 Ion Power Cells
just theoretical thing, you can beat this without the cyclops, you just need probably near impossible luck with some random person putting a cyclops shield generator in a timecapsole, as for the prawn suit for the ion cubes, im not sure there may be for somewhere, but again you can get some impossible luck with some random person putting a shield generator and some extra ion cubes in their timecapsole.
Except for the cyclops shield module, you could totally have done the entire game without vehicles! If you wanted more ion cubes without mining them, you could go to all the sanctuaries too.
I beat subnautica without using vehicles in my first playthrough. all you needed was materials for a hatch, multipurpose room, and a bioreactor. Every time i started running out of o2, id grab a fish, make a multipurpose room (including hatch and bioreactor) and throw the fish in the bioreactor, and boom, you refill the oygen
Really enjoyed the video! I found it after I completed the same run for the same reasons. More ion cubes can be found in the alien sanctuaries if you're willing to take the time to find them which I find fun. You don't need the prawn suit. I also did this with a mod that increases inventory space to make it far less tedious. The inventory space also means that it's practical to bring an extra air tank which makes it pretty doable without ever drowning. Very enjoyable playthrough
Thinking to the end, i think you need a cyclops to make the cyclops shield generator for the rocket, but I’m excited to see how car you can go! Air shouldn’t be a problem: you can RepulsionCanon some Corals with you anywhere if you don’t mind swimming slowly ...then proceeds to drown several times. Man, how can you build so many bases without tanking your frame rate?!
Haven't run in to any performance issues with Subnautica before. The bases are all far apart and pretty small. I don't think it loads them in beyond a certain distance
@@EphiTV i only have an old laptop to play on, but i always (and only) have difficulty at the “endgame”. I believe there's actually a hidden precursor cache near the dunes, in the sea treader's path. I've only found it once, and haven't been able to find it again, but it is there. You'd be able to find more ion cubes there.
Technically you cant. As you need the cyclops shield generator to launch the rocket. Other than that its simple. Just go as long as o2 allows you, build a corridor with a hatch and power. Get back 02. Do this till the end ( preferably via the bulb Bush entrance ). But you do need the shield generator. Idk if its mentioned I'm commenting this at the start. But hey I'm just pointing out
this was basically my experience. I didn't realize how handicapped I was making myself and I ended up getting far enough in the game that I fully scanned ghost and reaper leviathans as well as the blueprints for every vehicle in the game. I figured that all I really needed was the LifePod. after a while I discovered this seam off and I just had to stop playing for a bit out of frustration with myself lol
The cyclops is needed to get the shield generator. However, there are a handful of alien caches, similar to the small room in the lost river, that are spread across the map. They each have a few ion cubes. Not here to disrespect you. The caches are fairly hard to find so knowing about isn’t expected.

I figured out how to solve the super long loading screen when starting a new game:
Initially I had my game installed on my HDD, just a normal hard drive disk. When I reinstalled it onto my M.2 NVME SSD, it loaded much much faster. If you guys have an SSD and Subnautica is not on there, I'd highly recommend it. It cuts down loading times very very significantly.
And I drowned.
Would have drowned less if he had an Ultra High Capacity Tank which gives you 225 oxygen instead of 135 oxygen.

I am typing this before I watch the video:
NO it is impossibe, why? You NEED the cyclops to get the shield upgrade for your rocket. (Wich is crafted in the cyclops)
Is everything else except for the upgrade? YES. This had been done multiple times by world record runners, because they use extra crafted oxy tanks in stead of vehicles.
Edit: he's going back and building bases all the time, but there is a possibility to reach the sea emperor with 3 tanks (2 spare).
Honestly this video should have more views and you should have more subscribers. This is a quality video.
And it sucks that you have to build a cyclops just for the fabricator...
you can also use exterior grow beds and brain coral for air sources
You can also eat raw bladder fish to gain oxygen
The shield generator can be found in a time capsule, and the ion cubes were lost in the death at the cuddlefish lab, totally possible.
You got a point, but being able to find a shield generator in a time capsule would be insanely lucky.

SO FUN FACT ABOUT VEHICLE DEPTH LIMITS
The water that constitutes the majority of the human body isn't compressed by depth while you're diving like air is
What this means is that theoretically speaking with big enough supply of special gasses (oxygen is toxic at depth and the nitrogen in the air we breathe becomes narcotic) and enough exposure protection from the cold, there's actually no limit to what a person can physically dive to
Submarines on the other hand which are basically submerged pockets of air, are compressed by the water at depth; meaning you can only go so far with them before the hull starts to crack
This in a nutshell: Seamoth (and maybe prawn) is optional
prawn is very optional, there are pleanty more cubes around the map.
the seaglide is also optional if you choose to count it as a vehicle, it just makes the run a lot more tedious..
@@rev_dude you will easily drown without the prawn at the sea emperor place
You can build a base down there powered by thermal plants for oxygen
you can also carry multiple oxygen tanks to expand your range without needing to refill.
@@rev_dude Woah i forgot i made this comment and also what was i going on about??? Clearly i wasnt good enough at subnautica
In speedrunning, we technically complete the game without any vehicles. You don't need the prawn suit to finish the game. There are enough ion cubes in alien caches in the world to build multiple rockets. The cyclops however is necessary. That is true.
i wouldn't count the cyclops use, because the crafter is in basically in everything, so I wouldn't count it
I just completed my own no-vehicle run, my main takeaway was that vehicles hinder my progress more than helping it.

Otherwise, no. You can't get everything you need w/o a Cyclops.
if you build an air-base every swim distance of about 1000m.
That includes vertical And horizontal, but not anything else that slows you down, like forced turns.
By the time you're making 10 stops for air along the way to the lower layers, knowing you'll need ot make 3+ trips to get enough there to build all you need (can't drill those nice titanium deposits w/o a prawn)... you'll need some theraputic medications to stay sane.

its always interesting to see how other people play. like "am i doing anything wrong?" sort of curiosity, and while i think this episode was undeniably skewed to having way more "bases" (because they only really ever had like one room and a solar panel/ heat generator) its cool seeing so many in a small way. while in my own game i basically only ever build one. or like maybe two if i ever want to transfer to maybe some superdeep part as a sort of play at being a deep sea researcher. with the cyclops being a bit of a roaming base.

Try beating subnatica without touching water 🤔
You could almost do it without leaving the water, except a few story points
Hackers:thats not a challenge
Use a mod.. there is no restrictions
You can actually complete this without vehicles:
In total you need 6 purple tablets and there are 5 you can get for free (4 on Enforcement Platform Island, 1 on Floating Island)
In total you need 8 Ion Cubes to beat the story (1 for incubator, 1 for Incubator teleporter, 1 for 6th purple tablet, 1 for 2nd Blue tablet, 4 to make the 4 Ion batteries for the 2 Ion Power Cells for the Neptune) and you can get about 5-6/6-7 in total from the Enforcement Platform, Disease Facility and in a cave in the Emperor’s containment room)
By the time you build the 6th Purple Tablet, 2nd Blue Tablet and power both the Incubator and the teleporter you will have 2-3 or something Ion cubes left which isnt enough for the Neptune
To counter this you can simply build a 7th Purple Tablet and access Sanctuary B which is next to Lifepod 2 for an extra 4 Ion cubes which will give you enough for the 4 Ion Batteries to make the 2 Ion Power Cells
