  • Hello I am sick but put a video together anyway because that's how we roll at Frog Inc. anyway y'all were wanting me to try Halo 5 on legendary after I did my other video on Halo 5 so I finally did that and it wasn't as difficult as I was expecting but there were many annoying elements that add up over the course of the game so yeah

Halo 5 was 100% meant to be played co-op and punishes players who play solo. Legendary co-op was somewhat functional, it makes movment and flanking viable since you have real people able to cover you. However, I have to imagine the revive mechanic was added late into development as a patch for game balance. It feels cheap, like sticking behind cover and abusing revives is a kind of cheese in a way.

Yes, play co-op with all that splitscreen functionality Halo 5 has. /s
What a fucking trash game... At least with Halo 4 they were actually trying and some real passion went into it, even if it was sometimes misguided. Halo 5 feels like a soulless exec teabagging the Halo fandom and then demanding money from them for doing so.

Yup. It's simultaneously too easy and too difficult. It's too easy, because the revive mechanic can make you practically invincible in many situations. It's too difficult, because the game is balanced around the idea that your squad can revive you (making it so you have less health) and that the enemies have multiple targets to shoot at. Without your squad (they do die on occasion), the game is unfairly difficult with you having so little health and the fact that there are a TON of enemies that are spread out.
For context, I love Halo 2 on legendary. I think H2 legendary is great and underrated. But H5 on legendary is broken and unfair.

Normally if you kill the hunters the game puts an objetive icon on a switch you have to activate to go to the next area.
The thing is, you don't even have to kill the hunters, you can run past them and activate the switch from the start, and it still opens the path to the next area without needing to kill the hunters

The Hunters in this game were designed to be played with the squad system; you're meant to order your teammates to stay on one side of the arena and draw the Hunter's aggro while you get behind them and shoot their weak spot. The game doesnt communicate this to you at all though.

Halo 5’s campaign feels more like a poorly paced Destiny strike than a traditional Halo campaign at times. It’s just…so weirdly designed. There’s no dance or flow of combat… it’s just a shooting gallery where you ADS at enemies across a room and then you sprint down a corridor until you find the next shooting gallery in which you ADS at enemies across the room.

@@Ripa-Moramee that hasn’t been my experience with classic halo TBH and I’m curious as to why you felt classic halo is about as bland as H5
The only halo with some awkward pacing was maybe H2? But even then, it didnt feel like a bog standard COD campaign like H5’s firefights did most of the time. AI still interacted off each other, vehicle sequences were engaging, AI marines were a larger part of the levels, etc.
H5’s campaign is just like a bad destiny strike or something. The minimum engagement distances are too long for normal halo. All AI can melee you which further discourages getting close to enemies (even grunts which is just… wrong) and the weapon sandbox is just a series of ranged rifles with the only differences being their fire rate and damage. Everything is bland, sterile and not that creative. Each encounter is a bland shooting gallery and the sandbox is so universally “it’s just good at range” that nothing stands out or encourages different ways for sandbox encounters to play out.
You don’t get stuff like the H3 gravity hammer, Brute shot/concussion rifle, CE assault rifle with its wide spread but staggering ability and quick melee.
It just feels really weird and not really halo-y. Again, like a bad destiny strike rather than a halo game

to your point at 4:45, they actively deter you from using mobility because multiplayer balancing carried over to the campaign. When you sprint, your shields don't recharge. When you are charging your ground pound, it takes an eternity and leaves you vulnerable in the air. The system really works against you. The first thing I did when Halo 5 came out was beat it on Legendary and find every skull - this was before they re-balanced the Prometheans to be easier and the covenant to be harder. I've since beat it a few times more on Legendary post-re-balance, and I've got a few ideas of things they could've made specifically for the campaign that would've made Legendary playthroughs encourage the movement abilities a bit more.
The obvious first one is to make enemies not be able to hit you as easily while using the thruster pack. I feel like that's a no brainer, since that's kind of its purpose in PVP as well. On a successful ground pound or charge attack, players could inflict a stun on their targets for several seconds (with the exception of Warden Eternal and Hunters), building up sprint and then jumping could boost the player almost like a mini-grav lift jump (very mini, but faster than a normal jump). This could serve really well when combined with the ground pound or charge attack for a whopping combo against a shielded elite or squad of grunts. Sprinting towards grunts could also cause them to flee in terror.
The list goes on, but I'm already bordering on essay territory. I think there's things they could've done to the NPCs to reward the player for using the movement abilities. The enemies in this game just play like slightly tougher versions of Halo 4's NPCs and didn't transition to the new player movement system whatsoever.

Thanks again Frog. I'm so happy I watched this video and your previous one from Halo 5. It was on holiday sale and I picked it up and I had a lot of fun. It's not even close to the best Halo but it was still very fun.
I think they clearly improved the Promethian weapons to make them more distinct and fun to use (and for pistol and machine gun, actually useful) and the Promethians themselves had a lot more personality and were more fun to fight. Those were the two good positives along with the game and worlds themselves looking gorgeous. The elite homeworld was really cool and fighting over the ocean was a sight to see (though I'm not sure why all the elites are so beefcake. Seriously the Arbiter looks like he ate himself and they look and walk more like brutes). I'm more neutral on the Spartan abilities but I'm happy they weren't really necessary but were more just there if you want. I do get the gameplay has strayed far from original Halo and the story isn't great but my only real major complaint was the end. Why would you make Cortana the bad guy when Dr. Halsey (or an AI created by Dr. Halsey similar to Ultron created by Iron Man) makes sooooo much more sense AND you'd actually get to take advantage of Chief's "evolution" from Halo 4 by making it necessary for him to enter the Domain! (and if you follow this line you get the luxury of having 6 be a proper conclusion to the trilogy with all teams united to stop the AI and at some point Chief and Cortana have to use the Domain to separate and either die together or stay in the Domain together. Either way 6 should have been Chief's last game and Locke was set up to take over and be the main character for 7 and beyond).
Well sorry about that little story rant at the end. I overall enjoyed the game and thought they really had something going with the AI evolution and continuing on the theme of the Mantle along with continued power and threats from the Forerunners but the end is sooo frustrating. They did Cortana so wrong after doing such a good job with her in Halo 4. Oh well. I look forward to playing Infinite when that goes on sale :-)

I’m surprised you didn’t mention what is to me the element of this game that makes it the easiest legendary of any Halo; the fact you can have your squad use any weapons and they’ll have infinite ammo.
Sure this was a strat with marines before, but marines always die and also have limitations on what weapons they can and can’t use. Your Halo 5 squad mates can be revived and will also attempt to follow your direct orders. I would hand all of my squad precision power weapons and for me that made it a cakewalk. Easiest legendary since Halo 3.

Trying to play through H4 Spartan Ops in MCC on Legendary for completion reasons, very much has similar problems.
Really is a staple of incredibly lazy game design to just throw a shit ton of enemies at the player to ramp up difficulty. Is incredibly unfun and just a frustrating slog to fight off waves and waves and waves off enemies, rarely with any power weapons given to offset that. What ends up happening is you have to rely on using your spawn weapons, which can only handle so many enemies at once, so you get overwhelmed by numbers and just have to hope you pick off at least a couple before your next life.
And what's worse is that a lot of times they come with no warning - you'll be just about finishing up a wave, and then out of literal thin air a new group of Prometheans will warp in and quickly gun you down. Bungie's Halo never did that, always there was a drop ship that could be fairly seen and avoided, or in Reach firefight when they were spawned in thin air they would at least start them off in a designated area and let them move in to the fighting space.
Just one of many reason 343 Halo is soulless and incompetently developed. That's what happens when you hand off a beloved franchise to a corporate studio, they'll shit out a product for daddy Microsoft but there will be no care or artistry to it.

You know, like in the bungie games. that also didn't force you to slow down with aim down sights, so you could also be dodging while you're shooting.

So in addition to upping your squad to four people, they also threw massive swaths of enemies at you, trying to emulate these gigantic, sprawling battles that the books have. You mention this issue stretching back to Reach, but I feel Halo 5 is easily the worst offender, and the fact that most combat arenas are similarly big open circles don't help matters. I've played both Reach and Halo 5 relatively close to each other as of late, and I play on Heroic. I can still have some pretty nice run-and-gun action in Reach, and each encounter feels different and unique, but every fight in Halo 5 feels the exact same to me. There is never a time where I don't feel like hanging back and sniping is the best strategy, because there's too much shit going on in each section that will kill me if I try to take any other approach. I had similar irritations to yours going through the campaign, but I overall left it with a moderately negative view due to how repetitive and sluggish everything felt.

You should use more melee. Warden can be assassinated, knights can be back smacked. Hell, Knights are very easy. Break one of their shoulders, then hit them in the face with precision weapons when they scream. Instant kill.
Soldiers are weak to jumping over them, thrusting backwards and then assassinating. Grunts are grunts. Jackals with shields dodge EVERY grenade. Snipers are annoying as always. Elites hide and stand still too much making grenades super effective.
Essentially, Halo 5 is just rushing down opponents before they know what happened. Aside from Hunters. They are overtuned like you stated. A ground pound or spartan charge CAN daze them for 3 seconds if they are NOT enraged, but that risks them meleeing you before you connect. Same principle to Warden, just on a 20 second cooldown instead of a "rage" mechanic

I never found the hunters to be that annoying IN CAMPAIGN.
The way you're "supposed" to fight them in this one is using the squad commands. Tell your squad to flank, then you order them to shoot the hunters in the back, then you flank and now you're on one side and your team is on the other. Any time you shoot them and they look at you, your team hits them in the back and causes them to turn around, every time they turn around you shoot them. Easy win, and a decent way to wrap the squad mechanic into regular gameplay. Which might be why there's no power weapon in the first encounter, maybe they are trying to teach you to use the squad commands?
In multiplayer (firefight and warzone) though, I cannot stand hunters. Obviously you can't order your teammates around, and if you're either low on REQ packs or simply don't have enough points to call power weapons in at the moment, there's really no way to fight them. All the problems you listed in the video apply and now you can't even get revived at all. And in Warzone you have to watch out for other players sneaking up behind you and killing you while you're trying to bring them down. Very annoying design that really only works in campaign.

I think simply giving our shields enough resistance to tank one more shot in most circumstances would have been enough to greatly help the flow of legendary.
The game seems to be balanced around co-op with no scaling for solo play so (unless you're able to avoid taking damage the majority of the time) it's going to feel like playing Solo Spartan Ops on legendary with a janky revive system instead of being able to respawn at the current mission state.
It leads to an incredibly disappointing experience unless you approach it with the same mentality as a bullet hell, which it was not designed to be.
