- Mad Max goes mad. One of the eight 30+ point quarters by a player in NBA history. Vernon hits threes, drives to the basket and scores with acrobatic layups or free throws after drawing the foul. Houston didn't need Hakeem in this one. January 26, 1991.
mad max was my dude when i was young
I was at this game!!!! Thank you so much for posting this.
Drop 51... no dance... no interview... no tweets... just walk off the floor. #gangster

You seen this ja morant shit coming 3 yrs ago ? Prophet
they were contesting him at every chance. he earned those points
MadMax was a crazy dude. He could either shoot you into a win (Game 3 IN 94 vs. Phx or Game 7 vs. NY in the Finals) or equally shoot you out of a series LA in '91 where he attempted more shots than even Hakeem, lol.
Memo to Cavs defenders... he likes to go right.
Madmax the Rocketman!
Being from Houston, growing up in that era...man, I remember, going to the car wash, with my uncle, as a kid, and would see Max up there sometimes, and he was talk about how he would shut down MJ..."man, I was on Michal Jowden's ass, mane" Lol
He never shut down MJ
@@PowerGearPerformance hell yeah he did explain how is that the rockets always beat bulls 1991-1993 5-1 rockets madmax won over Jordan
What part of the city was this?
he owns the car wash or what?
@@hoopfellas88 not sure if he did. He may have been, or maybe knew the owner. Not sure why he was there Lol was just a kid, hanging out with my uncle. This was on the Southside back in the day.
7:45 : "and Steve Kerr wants a time out"
Lmao!
all star potential
If he shot 1 more three...and 1 more free throw.....he would have made History -.-
why?
Mad Max would fit perfectly in todays NBA, where undersized chucker shooting guards play the point.... Anyway, Maxwell was awesome when he was "on", he was also a terriffic defender when focused.
Won't expecting that step back... vintage max
Heavy Gratitude
Lamarmatic, can't believe some of these games you have. You should be nominated for youtube legend status.
This was when Hakeem was out and I think it was either the blood issue in his leg or the Bill Cartwright elbow to his orbital socket. Either way Mad Max was a joy to watch and an absolute stud going to the basket. No fear of anyone. And yes, he played toe to toe with Jordan.
Pretty sure it was Cartwright with the sharp elbows
Was one of my favorite Rockets really #2 behind Olajuwon who was my favorite. I like Cassell but they traded him away after 2nd championship
At one point, he had the most 3s in NBA history. OG
Mad Max
I'm here because I noticed Devin Booker was only one point away today from tying up Vernon Maxwell record of 30 points scored in the fourth quarter. :( Still unbelievable that he managed to record 29 points in the fourth quarter tonight... at age 20, I might add!
Crazy Luigi george gervin scored 33 points in a quarter... Thats the record not maxwells preformance
Lol @ Bill talking about getting three-points "the old fashioned way" from 1991 to 2012.
I miss Calvin Murphy's commentating. He was great.
Vernon was the best in the west ❤️
Excellent!
Mad max could've avg 25 a game if hakeem wasn't the main focus of the offense.
He was crazy at times too.
MAD MAX was MJ's worst nightmare
Here after Kenny smith interview
That's dope
vernon=bad dude
He did the Double Dribble dunk😆
Is this when Hakeem had that injury around his eye socket?
***** I'm very curious to find out that Vernon Maxwell was relegated to backup SG after Houston acquired legendary Portland Trail Blazers superstar Clyde Drexler in '94-'95 in return for Otis Thorpe.
Sure Houston may have won their second NBA Championship in '94-'95, but that would be the last time the Rockets ever won an NBA Title as they ended up losing not one, but two valuable key players after Hakeem Olajuwon. But many Houstonians wished that they could've acquired Clyde Drexler without having to give up Otis Thorpe in exchange, they could've instead given up Kenny Smith seeing as Cassell had more upside than K. Smith at that point in '94-'95.
But would Kenny 'JET' Smith have created a logjam on Portland's depth chart between Rod Strickland, Terry Porter, James "Hollywood" Robinson, Steve Henson, Negele Knight and Kenny Smith himself if the original JET were traded instead of Thorpe seeing as the original JET was less valuable than Thorpe?
Since the PG duties were shared between a young Sam Cassell and Kenny Smith, we're wondering what could have been if Vernon Maxwell shifted over to point guard instead of having to automatically give way to Clyde "The Glide" Drexler as starting SG and the Houston Rockets' starting lineup could look like this:
1) PG1: Vernon Maxwell
2) SG1: Clyde Drexler
3) SF1: Robert Horry
4) PF1: Otis Thorpe
5) C1: Hakeem Olajuwon
6) PG2: Sam Cassell
7) SG2: Mario Elie
8) SF2: Chucky Brown
9) PF2: Carl Herrera
10) C2: Zan Tabak
11) SF3: Tracy Murray
12) PF2: Pete Chilcutt
How would the '94-'95 Houston Rockets have fared with Maxwell, Drexler, Horry, Thorpe, Hakeem, Cassell, Elie, Chucky Brown, Herrera, Tabak, Tracy Murray and Chilcutt on the same lineup?
Would you really trust a player as erratic as Maxwell at the starting point guard position, haha?
What I wonder about is whether he ever got his '95 ring since he left in a shameful manner.
***** Yeah, and Vernon Maxwell's next stop after Houston was a one-year 'prove it' revival campaign ('95-'96) with the Philadelphia 76ers coached by John Lucas, a former NBA drug addled player turned NBA head coach/recovery guru.
Except that Maxwell's '95-'96 campaign statline was on par with his '90-'91 and '91-'92 seasons with the Houston Rockets where he was actually able to be trusted to score/average at least 17+ points per game, but those were the years before the year Hakeem Olajuwon became more of a willing passer, became a nice guy rather than the meanie star that he was in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Mad Max could play D, score like crazy, but was Starks on meth. He'd take the craziest shots, and might snap at the wrong time. I have tons of respect for him, because he was real, but his wild ass 3's could force the Rockets to live and die by his insane decisions.
+TexasPsychoK lies thats my big cuz nobody aint doin dat up North drug bitch we from da south that what u do stop it wit dat

You realize I was a fan of his... he was the third favorite player of my Grandfather behind Rudy T. and Moses Malone. He liked him more than Hakeem and Calvin Murphy due to his ridiculous skills on certain so-called superstars. So I'm not certain what you're talking about, my bad if I offended... I loved Mad Max because he CARED, and would take bizarre shots from very deep. No conscience when shooting, that's how you have to be. Oh, the meth comment wasn't literal. I meant like... Kenny Lofton ran like a cheetah on coke... I didn't mean he was running around looking for meth before it got popular. IT WAS A COMPLIMENT. He was Starks on meth, because while Starks was insane, he could go cold, and then lose his confidence from 3. Look at what Miller and a few others did to him. Maxwell would slow you down on offense, and after missing 10 shots, hit the big shot.
The thing about Maxwell was that all and all, he was not a great three point shooter. He was only 33 percent from beyond the arc. When he was on, he was good. But when he was off, he could be awful at times.
@fl510 Wtf are you talkin about Bill did like to do so he often got frantic when they score a game winner esp. along with Cal Murph
I know him
his son goes to my school
Does he now?
@Domini478 And Max avg 35 dawg
I met him on an elevator
Lolll
mike newlin was about as boring as matt bullard is now.
Idc how hot Mad Max was, if you let him light you up for 30 points in a quarter you're defense is terrible. Maxwell 51 points? Smh.
