Absolutely great job!!! I’m going on my 50th year in the car biz. Started when I was 18 went on my own when I was 20. Painting panels, truck beds dyeing vinyl tops for car lots, interiors too. Then I was probly the first guy to paint a bumper on a car lot in ‘80 when Honda came out with a painted plastic bumper in the Accord. Weird how paint has changed over the years. When I started in ‘72 they were using lacquer and enamel. I remember the old Imron clear that started killing people. But man what an amazing clear. It was bullet proof and never needed to be waxed or polished ever. There’s Imron paint jobs out there that are still as glossy as they were 50 years ago. I started fixing rims about 30 years ago when a friend asked me to fix the rims on his Porsche. The rest is history. You did a really excellent job on a polished aluminum rim. I am very impressed. Most guys aren’t patient enough and guys that do it for a living have their short cuts because they have to get things done in a timely manner if they’re working for dealerships, but you really did an excellent job. You could have sprayed a little clear over it instead of polishing it for a longer lasting look, but really not necessary. Once again,I’m very impressed with your work ethic, your pride in your workmanship and your attention to detail. Take care and the more you do the better you’ll get at it Personally I think rims are a pain in the ass. Repairing the painted chrome ones is like matching a snowflake. But for some fun, check out Alsa and House of Color chrome paints. Spend some time on the Alsa site. They’ve got all kinds of cool stuff. I think you’ll like it. Really enjoyed reading your comment, it's interesting to hear about the progression you've made and things you've experienced being a professional in the industry for 50 years! I want to fix up my own rims but kind of afraid, they are black also so will be a lot of work and not sure if my abilities will cut it. Hats off to you and others in your industry for making an art of such hard work!
Your the only honest person I've watched repair wheels. Most others will tell you this wheel only took me 10 minutes to repair using their method. I know how long it takes me to do a good job, and it clearly takes a fair amount time and patience to get good results. Thank you!
I do wheel repair and use three different Sanders. Honestly you did better then other videos that I have watched. With the right tools this is easily a 20min job. No bondo needed either. But great job honestly
I got pretty bad curb rash on all rims on a car i bought. Figured i use the rim's for the winter tires. Can I screw up the wheels doing this? Like will it throw off the balancing of my wheels? I realize itll take a lot of time but I don't want to spend the money right now for a professional.
@@stuntman014 Not likely, because you're not taking that much metal off. You might throw the balance off ever so slightly, but I doubt it would be enough to be noticeable. I worked as an automotive technician for years and balanced 10s of thousands of wheels and it's surprising how much the balance of a wheel and tire can be off before it'll start to cause a noticeable vibration.
@@adrenalinehigh2070 he's not wrong i also repair wheels for a living and that's easily a 20 min job, the job he did I can do in about 10 mins. 15 mins if I have to throw a little toner on it and clear it to protect it. This is one of the best curb-rash-repair videos I've seen; most of them skip over the fine sanding and polishing, cutting straight to priming / painting.
I followed this video today in attempting to fix my bmw wheel that i accidentally damaged the other day, what a huge difference after the "repair job" was done. I thought I need to use bondo and stuff to get the result i want, but with the help of the video i was able to get it back into a much better shape with just sanding and polishing....great help from you man! I subscribed to your channel because of this video! thumbs up to you
Great video! I completed in an hour for jagged curb rash on the lip of my chrome wheel (no bends), with no speciality tools - just a dremel and sandling block. Start with 60 (or 80), then 120, then 240 grit sanding disks on a dremel. Be careful JUST to get the scratches off, go no futher, and do your darnest to keep the repair area level. Then wetsand by hand 600, 1000, 1500, and 3000 grit sandpaper with a small or cut sanding block to remove scratches and make sure it's all nice and even. Finish with Meguiars ultra and/or medium cut, and then finishing polish (using a dremel polishing attachment) and in my case it looks 99% as good as new. There was road rash on 70% of my lip and I can barely see the repair from 6 inches.
Well done, Sir. I’ve had to sand a few curb rashes in the past. I didn’t have any tools at all, except sandpaper, water, towel and some elbow-grease. It takes patience, but you feel a whole lot better after.
You saved me HUNDREDS....Bought rims for my Tahoe (24s) with scratches for $500 because the guy thought curb rash was permanent. Followed your steps... they look brand new.

Good process of experimenting and getting results. Some guys use a rasp to remove the hard ridges..you had the grinder that most of us don't. Hitting with 80, 400,1000 and higher to polish works well. Did my rim in and got it looking a whole lot better in 20 min with this process. Great job! Mine are black, so i just took the lazy way and used a sharpie oil based paint pen. I'll definitely have to do this eventually and get them repainted though.
Thank you for this DIY video. There are so many products out there it’s good to know that you can do this yourself with patience and a little elbow grease with sandpaper.
I was at the car wash the other day and after I had taken my car through the tunnel(automatic touchless) I was wiping my car down with a rag and noticed a few spots on my rim that had gotten curb rash. I was super pissed because my car is relatively new and have never hit a curb with my car. I think the guide in the tunnel must've gotten my rim. I am someone who loves and appreciates my vehicles so I was pretty frustrated when I saw it. However, they're relatively small and after watching this video I have confidence they will be sanded out nicely. I'm on a tangent here but yeah I was so frustrated because I've committed myself to keep my car in superb condition which includes not using brush car washes anymore. Needless to say I'm no longer going to use that tunnel anymore and will pressure wash the car myself instead.
Great job man. Seriously, you inspire me to not do it for myself but to find someone who knows how to do this and make that investment. I’m not good with a sander. When you said you tend to over do it. That’s me all the way. I have a 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T with rims that look just like this. However, my rims are dipped in black. So the marks show ALOT
Awesome job I just nabbed up a set of mandrus 20s with a bit of curb rash but hey, it's nowhere as bad as yours were and your job came out great. I'm less intimidated and now I know my $100 investment for 4 20s wasn't a bad one considering only 2 have baby curb rash on the polished lip. Thanks for the info and tips!
Just damaged my brand new Wheel... So unecessarily too! But thank you for this video as it relieved me of the "WHAT NEXT" stress I have been going through... Im going to do exactly this.
Pro-tip: silicon carbide sandpaper is waaaay better than red oxide for these kind of jobs. It's more expensive, but easily pays for itself because it is more long-lasting and gets sanding jobs done quicker. In an automotive shop it's really the only kind of sandpaper you should have around, it's just *that* much better.
We only used the red oxide pads on the power sanders cuz that's what we use around the shop for general purpose stuff. All the hand sanding was silicon carbide sandpaper though (i added the product links in the description). Good point though!
I just did that to my Dodge Challenger came too close to a curb on the highway and it did the same thing thanks for the video it helped me out greatly!
My son just bought a 2014 Jetta with aftermarket wheels on it and it looks pretty good except for curb rash on 3 of the 4 wheels and I wanted to spend som dad/son time trying to make his wheels look better on a limited budget. This video was great and informative and helped me with something that I have never had to do before on my cars. The only question I have is when doing this on alloy clear coated wheels if the clear coat can be redone? I will check on the internet to see if buying clear coat in a can is a thing or not? Like I said, thanks for the good info and to the point video!
I recently bought my first car with low profile tyres. Found out the hard way that the rims are more exposed than with bulgy old traditional tyres. Luckily my kerb rash is faily light but all four wheels are affected so I've got my work cut out for me. I have normal tyres fitted now, it is a 4X4 (Subaru Forester) so I figured chunkier tyres are going to be better anyway if I decide to do a bit of green laning ;-) Thanks for this, thumbs up.
Great job.... we're alike in the over doing it thing. "Just a little more and it will be perfect!" Then when it gets screwed up, we're like 'dammit, I shoulda stopped!". Anyways, great job!
Happened to me recently when I was trying to remove a broken valve cover bolt off the heads, i was able to bring it up to level with the head but then kept going at it and pushed it back in further. If only I was patient I could have jb welded it to a bolt and taken it out.
I have high polished chrome wheels with rim rash....I wonder if sanding would expose any copper? It's looks so bad I'm willing to do a small section and find out. Great tutorial!
I will be using some of these techniques when i get my wheels in this Friday. I just copped a used set of SSR GT02s. My very first set of wheels! #keepingitauthentic #fakepartsbreakhearts I don't have an air compressor, so using pneumatic tools isn't an option for me. Going to try to make use of my dremel, and flexible sanding block and sandpaper. Then wet sand, and polish.
Finally I found a video where someone did it correctly. I got tired of watching guys grind , bondo, then PAINT there aluminium wheels ? WTF is wrong with some people 🤣 Thanks for the video 👍 I now feel good about trying to fix some curb rash.

man I just curb my black rims with lettering, literally sick right now! I don't even want to drive my truck like this! Im gonna do what did and take my time, tape the lettering and hit with the black wheel paint
Thanks for doing the video it’s much appreciated it’s better than some of them that go way to far in detail and make it look a lot more difficult than you did.
Hit it with 2k clear coat from spray max or 1k and it'll look much better. It blends really well on its own just heat the can nice and warm and apply a quick coat allow to dry a few mins then add another light flow coat and done. It'll also protect the wheel from surface rust or flaking Clear coat on the wheel.
Nice job , thanks for video , iv done a bit of that my self , only thing is with out a clear coat on that worked area , its open to the elements and will have issue in short time .
I’ve searched many vids to find a good DIY rim rash fix, I love the honesty and how to just get to the problem, this is what I’ve been looking for, great job and I’m going to do this on my 22 Volvo, one question ?? So when you sanded the rash the clear coat surrounding was there a visible difference ?? Do you think a light clear coat over the fixed area would work ?? Thank you !!
Thanks for this. I banged my high gloss black rims while entering a parking garage. After that, I banged up the other 3 back to back. I've never done this to any car EVER. Soon as I purchased my new car though, I became a victim 😂
You don't suck 😁 Thanks much for the great video. I was out with my mustang this afternoon and scraped my rim... Thanks to your techniques it looks great.
I also have a chrome/gunmetal like finish on my XXR with gutter marks. What polish did you used? I have a sander and sandpapers are not a problem, but I am worried if I can't make it with the same finish as the original paint. Did you use wax?
i curbed a matte color wheel, and if i sand it down, the discolor will be there.. will touch up paint (that closesly matches the finnish) help..? Also depending on the deepness of the curb, will determine how low of a grit grade i should get for the sand paper?
Id be really happy with that. I'm repairing some BBS LMs and they have the lip painted silver this continues on both the outside and inside of the barrel. It is then clear coated. I'm trying to figure out how you replicated the clear coated polished lip.
How does the lip look when the wheel is spun slowly? Is the repaired area lower than the rest of the wheel or is it not noticeable? Seems like some material was lost when it was damaged.
I have done this a few times on Aluminum Mustang,Camaro and Corvette Wheels by hand with the same results. I started out Wet-sanding with 220,320,400 and lastly 600 then Aluminum Polish. They came out like new. The factory 2007 Mustang wheels looked like crap to start out with being Ford Balanced these wheels from the factory with outside lead weights that corroded the wheels over the years in the weather. Almost as bad as curb rash where the corrosion was around the wheels. Took off all the clear coat also that had gone bad over the years. The wheels never looked any better then they do today being the car sits out of the elements. Both the 2016 Camaro and 2006 C6 Corvette had curb rash and look like new today. The Corvette passenger side on both wheels had the Curb Rash other then that when I purchased the car in 2017 with 14k miles on it it looked perfect like brand new top to bottom. I should mention I have all the same air tools you showed but was afraid of taking to much off the rims using them. Next time I may consider using them depending on the damage because I have to say my fingers and hands were hurting after spending many hours especially on the Mustang wheels. Doing it by hand to anyone reading be prepared to walk away and come back to it within hours or another day or days if you are not in any hurry like I wasn’t in. Just take your time and try to have a little patience with the project. You won’t be sorry.
Does removing some of the aluminum , when you grind and sand , have an affect on the balance of the mag ? Excuse my ignorance, but just needed to ask . I just bought a nice Kia Forte , but unfortunately, the mags have markings / scrapes like yours. I wonder if i can do a similar job in repairing them though. I would be very happy to have same results ! thx for the video .
Technically it will have some effect on the balance, but whether it’s noticeable or not will depend on the amount of material removed. Doubt you’ll be taking off enough material to not be able to counter it with a regular wheel balance.
Damn you definitely boosted my confidence I got some TSW Wheels my sister drove my car and crazy curvy crashed it but I think I'll try to bring them back West case scenario plastic dip because rims chrome lip but like I said if not I Plasti Dip but definitely give me a boost of confidence good job
I have andoized polished lip. It has about a 10in scratch. Not deep. Will a light sand take care of it? I know if it's clear coated it'll be alot more work
Absolutely great job!!!

Thanks for doing the video it’s much appreciated it’s better than some of them that go way to far in detail and make it look a lot more difficult than you did.
that's why we called it "easy diy" haha!
Mate you do a better job than most shops that have all the gear hahaha. Looks mint
Nice job , thanks for video , iv done a bit of that my self , only thing is with out a clear coat on that worked area , its open to the elements and will have issue in short time .
Great video man! Thanks for the all advices. Wish someone can do a video on GTI mk7 wheels and curb rush repair on them! 👍
Q
Thanks for the walkthrough!! Looks great 👍💯
Great narrative! And nice work. You have a voice that is similar to Red Green’s which gives you instant cred.
Really great job, it does look sooo much better. Thanks
much appreciated!
You don't suck 😁 Thanks much for the great video. I was out with my mustang this afternoon and scraped my rim... Thanks to your techniques it looks great.
After file and sanding you can polish with polishing kit or paint or powder coat .
You rock man stay frosty my frend
Excellent work! You must work for Moto IQ...
I am about to attempt mine, and honestly I think you did a damn good job buddy. I hope mine turns out to be nearly as good at least
I also have a chrome/gunmetal like finish on my XXR with gutter marks. What polish did you used? I have a sander and sandpapers are not a problem, but I am worried if I can't make it with the same finish as the original paint. Did you use wax?
Came out great for your very 1st time doing that repair. Nice.
Exactly what we all needed. Thank you so much!
That was a great video and you did an amazing job. Soon as I get the materials together I’m doing this! …maybe.
Good thing I have all these tools and sanders and grinders just laying around my room
Good job man, especially since you said you've never done it before. Looks like it turned out pretty well.
i curbed a matte color wheel, and if i sand it down, the discolor will be there.. will touch up paint (that closesly matches the finnish) help..?
Also depending on the deepness of the curb, will determine how low of a grit grade i should get for the sand paper?
Id be really happy with that.
I'm repairing some BBS LMs and they have the lip painted silver this continues on both the outside and inside of the barrel.
It is then clear coated.
I'm trying to figure out how you replicated the clear coated polished lip.
We didnt redo the clear coat, you can see a very fine edge where the clear coat ends but its hardly noticeable.
on a polished rim, whats the best grade sandpaper to use without damaging rim?
How does the lip look when the wheel is spun slowly? Is the repaired area lower than the rest of the wheel or is it not noticeable? Seems like some material was lost when it was damaged.
Bro u did a awesome job from what it was!!!
Solid repair job there dude..I would be pleased with that result...well done
That was very therapeutic to watch.
Nice work. So are your wheels polished aluminum then? I have chrome, will it work?
Nice work and saved a few bucks, cheers...
@@motoiq tyvm . Appreciate it .
Random question, who built your rotary for the car... I have issues with my local builder here in Dallas, TX....
Its an LS
@@motoiq BOOO lol
So, i sander the spot up to 2000 and i polished and waxed it with a machine and its still very faded. Any tips how i can get it more clear?
You did a wonderful job 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I’m gone try that on mine
Great work! No wasted time as well.
Awesome brother I'm doing mines this weekend
Very impressed with the outcome. Great video 👍🏼
wow, nice job! you would never know it was damaged unless someone pointed it out. 👍🏻
Ok bro WHAT SIZE OF SAND.PAPER DO YOU USE FROM 🤔 START TO FINISH.. CAN YOU TELL. ME. PLEASE
Awesome job!!!! It came out really well.
Got my first curb rash ever and I am so mad. 😫 usually how much it will cost to have this repaired?
FanTASTIC job lad!! Kudos!!
I have andoized polished lip. It has about a 10in scratch. Not deep. Will a light sand take care of it? I know if it's clear coated it'll be alot more work
You did a great job but those are chrome wheels....how did you refinish the chrome??
They are polished not chrome
Where can you get the tool use to knock the rough rim spots back in place. I think he says they are from a body shop. I might need those.
Where can I take my chrome wheels to get curve rashes repaired?
