  • Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a fantastic sport, a great fitness activity, a way to make friends and a good way to learn to push past challenges, but first and foremost it's a martial art. That means you need to know how to apply your skills when someone is trying to punch your teeth down your throat!

    Most martial arts that have a sport, have techniques outside of the sport's ruleset.

    I train at a great sport school but also do a couple hours of muay thai a week there, I think training striking a little bit is important to be well rounded.

    great synopsis. I get annoyed with the “sport bjj” would never work on the street. Yes It’s true it won’t “work” for many scenarios just like a weapon isn’t ideal for every specific scenario either. I’ll give you an example. Few weeks ago my buddy and I were walking on a busy Saturday night downtown and some nut job came up from behind us, sucker punched me in the back of the head and my buddy in the throat (we think it was mistaken identity) once I came to and realized this is “really happening” and we were OK , my bjj training allowed me to at the very least 1.) remain calm 2.) it’s ok to run away 3.) if I *have to* engage then at least I have a plan. Look for the take down and flag down cops. Luckily he backed off. no need to get shot, arrested, or end up in the hospital. it wasn’t worth it. With no bjj training I prob would have crapped my pants, had no plan, and felt powerless.

    Peace. As a BJJ lover & casual practitioner (reasons to follow), I enjoyed this balanced perspective. And, I agree with much of what you say. BUT... And, I say this with all due respect (to the people putting in work to pave a way for themselves... Cuz, I owe all my grappling credit to God & my Pops.. *NOT* the Gracies..or anyone else), there's 1. Oswaldo Alves & Takeo Yono. (Non Gracie Lineage.. Lot's of history swept under the mats with that..and, *WHY* ?) 2. Marcelo, Saulo, Ralph, etc (list goes on) have all been busted up pretty badly with there versions of BJJ as combat discipline/martial art. And, the rest really never did all that well against high level opponents (without the absolute necessity to cross train). IMO, the Old School Vale Tudo & Lutre Livre guys were ahead of the game (in terms of where MMA is today) 3. BJJ folks love to mock this point.. But, oh well... Fact is, BJJ is dangerous on the street. Meaning, did you see TUF Team Penn vs. Team Pulver? Remember what happened in the back yard (tight armbar from the guard on Marlon)? *THATS* what will happen to you in (*REAL LIFE* .. Like, on concrete, near curbs, brick walls, & fire hydrants). Well, unless you're in the Hood. Then you'll get soccer kicked to the hospital (&/or morgue). I'm going to say it bluntly: The Ground is the *LAST* place you should be in the streets. BJJ, as a "martial art," is best saved for sport (i.e. rule set arena's), guaranteed 1 on 1's, &/or to escape from the bottom. And, don't even get me started with the ego machismo running rampant in the community. IMO, BJJ is an excellent form of exercise & kinesthetic awareness. Self defense? Eh.. Go Sambo, wrestling (get that sprawl, take down, & get up off the ground mindset solid), or Kodakan Judo with Striking. And, please... Never *EVER* learn gun/knife "disarms" from BJJ folks. Lest you get dis~armed or dis~membered.. Real talk. Let's just call it what it is: (as Cassio Werneck once said in a news interview) "BJJ is more of a Culture." AKA "Lifestyle." For many, it's a career.
    Respect.
    Peace.

    • @thefullmonte1902
      @thefullmonte1902 6 лет назад

      That is probably difficult to explain. One hint is: is there a variety of belts and ages represented, then it is probably an good school. Are there only brown and black belts, stay away. :)

    I agree with a lot of this, but I think the key is what foundation is a person's game built upon. Are they trained to deal with strikes and other real world variables that take place in a fight. If they are, they can be the butt scootiest purple belt in the world.
    However, if they started out as the butt scootiest white belt without any practice or understanding of dealing with strikes, takedowns, etc., then they're likely going to have problems in the real world. Doesn't mean they can't handle themselves, means they are likely to have more issues.

  • @thefullmonte1902

    Just an add-on: I consider MMA grappling/jiu-jitsu as self-defence oriented.

    Excellent rant. :) I would rather attend a great school of a martial art that I don't like than a crappy school that teaches my favorite martial art. A good teacher will understand the weaknesses of the style he/she teaches and will compensate for them. I happen to think that a great kickboxing instructor would incorporate elements of JJ, just so you don't get beat up by a grappler. Ideally a great school will teach you everything .. eventually. Of course, a great JJ school will also teach you how to handle MMA and real fights.

    Agreed; is what I preached more or less every time I taught. I trained white belts on how to deal with getting punched while they were on their backs.

    But I had Shooto and Pancrease. I think Rings was better at the time. I don't need to mention PRIDE. we already had it. Feel free to talk trash about the Gracies. Their myth of inventing submission grappling and MMA has been debunked.

    Bzz. Wrong. It USED to be a martial art first. BJJ had devolved into a sport with some self defense properties like Greco Roman wrestling. BJJ has become the modern day stripmall karate school: a watered down cash grab that is steeped in ineffective techniques. The Gracie family developed a fighting system by stripping out the useless traditional moves and only keeping things that WORKED. Because BJJ has followed the path of SPORT and profit, it has allowed ridiculous techniques like Berimbolo and spider guard to develop, fester and infect a once effective discipline. BJJ has become the modern mcdojo karate school by failing to acknowledge exactly what you are taking in this video: BJJ is SUPPOSED to be a martial art. But it isn't.
    It's hard to admit that you've been spending your years learning something that is no longer relevant. It happens to people in their careers, it happens to musicians and it's happened to BJJ. When that happens, you either adapt or you fail. If you'd like to move beyond games of "who can loop choke whom first" and learn a true modern martial art, then it's time to move on to Krav Maga. If you aren't ready for that, then enjoy learning your crane techniques, Daniel-san.

    • @foimal9913
      @foimal9913 6 лет назад

      OPTIC_ASSASSIN46 Yes Learn to read. Krav Maga takes the EFFECTIVE and practical aspects of many arts which is why it is a martial art. 80% of BJJ's techniques are now useless in a real fight and thus CANNOT be considered a "martial art" first and a "martial sport" second. You sound just like the idiot strip mall karate students of the 90s who couldn't be told by the Gracie family that they were wasting their time learning useless movements. Times have changed. BJJ has become everything it used to hate about martial arts.

      You are wrong plain and simple. Someone who is good at Sport Bjj isn’t retarded....... he knows how to throw a punch, but what’s more important than that is that he already knows how to get to mount position..... meaning he can dominate in a fight. Don’t bash jujitsu because you train a different martial art learn to respect both.
