I remember growing up in the rough part of town where my junior high school was. It was a tough school for teachers. I remember there was a nerdy teacher who came from up north and I knew she would not survive her first year. Well, she turned out to be the best teacher we ever had and she is the reason why I love reading. Even though she came for a good family up north, she was able to connect with us kids in the ghetto.

This is so inspiring!!! I really hope these students take what Lindsay has given them and they use it to the best of their ability. Homeless teens need sympathy and encouragement. She gave them that, great job!!!

Or possibly high schoolers just hate ice breakers? I know that ice breakers used to make me instantly quiet in high school.

LOL...maybe the ice breaker didnt work because it played off of stereotypical "black" interests, and thus the attempt was patently forced.

I'd wager if they had a stronger truancy court in this system, and the rest of her 25 students were forced to show up to her room, her class would be total chaos. An efficient truancy system can ensure that every student who doesn't want to be present in the room shows up and acts out until they are thrown out.

I wonder if she is still teaching. I also wonder if she thinks new orleans has bad schools b/c of the teachers.

The best teachers in any community come from teachers from their own communities. Some communities do well enough on their own, without the government teachers' help.
