MY TOWN! its the tallest church tower of the netherlands with 112 meter high. In 1674 the middle part what connected the tower to the main building collapsed. So the artwork outside of the church let you see what it looked inside when it still was connected! Utrecht have many many more nice places than shown in the video 🥰 but I loved watching it! Be welcome! I can give you a tour with my mum haha (historic researcher born in the street in front of the tower)

The shops you mentioned at 9:31 used to be wharf cellar, used as an easy accessible storage facility of all the goods which entered by boat. The wharf cellars are part of the building above. Now the wharf cellars are often used as a restaurant or even a b&b.

6:20 the Dom Tower has crazy history. In 1674 a freak tornado cleaved through the middle of the church. The Netherlands never has any tornados, so this was like a 1 in a 1000 years event. That's now the open square you're looking at. The tower you walk through was supposed to be the entrance. The artwork is there to convey what it used to be like when entering the Dom cathedral.
Also the Dom Tower has a near identical replica in Japan's Holland theme park.

Now I live in a small town in tje province of Utrecht named Breukelen. Did you know that Brooklyn, USA is named after my little Village? Same as Harlem ( in Dutch it is named Haarlem. Many places in the USA are named after Dutch cities. Tjanks for your great reaction. Grtz Barry

Regarding the stained glass: I live in a village called Tubbergen (in the Netherlands) and we have a church that has stained glass windows made by 5 consecutive generations of artisans ... yes, 1 family spanning 5 generations made all the windows. As far as I know there is no other church in the world that has windows made by so many consecutive generations. And ... they are gorgeous as well.

This is only a part of the Old town. Utrecht comes after, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague as 4th biggest city. The big tower is the Dom tower, the highest church tower in the Netherlands (113 m) build 1382. The "Mural" you saw on the outside of the church next to it is where in the early days a big "bridge" church structure stood between the down tower and the main church. It was destroyed during a big storm in 1674. Also the Utrecht canals are the only ones in the Netherlands with the "werven" , the below street shops/ restaurants and terraces on the waterfront.

    • @michielotsen6317
      @michielotsen6317 2 года назад +1

It's called a "schip" (ship) or kerkeschip not a bridge. Btw, love my adoptive hometown, a City if you want it to be, with plenty to do for a day or night on the town. Or a cosy village to hang out in together with friends and lovedones. An absolute must see experience in the Netherlands. A bit smaller than other cities, but Utrecht has it all. Easyily done on foot, bike or public transport. See the inner city, wander past mainstreet and meet the Utrechters. Chances are they'll show you the town properly! UTRECHT ÈG WÉL!!!

The builders of cathedrals tried to imitate heaven. People back then had limited impressions of the world around them. To step into such a building, with all those stained glass, all those colors. Imagine the impression it must have made on them. Even on us today.

Outside the church (half destroyed in 17th century by a hurricane) you can enter an underground museum where you can see the remains of a roman fortress that was there before Utrecht even started. It derives the name from it (Ultrajectum: downstream ford). Some have another explanation: Ultima trajectum meaning the last transhipment port to the sea.

When the shot jumped from the interior of the church to the bicycles parked on the street, I briefly hoped that the most modern bicycle shed under the Stationsplein in Utrecht would be visible. The number of parking spaces has been expanded from 7,500 to 12,500. According to the municipality of Utrecht, this makes it the largest bicycle shed in the world... So far ;)
Unfortunately, this original video is from 2018 and the major expansion of the "bicycle shed" was completed in 2019.

At 8:33 In all of these old churches you will see these big stone plates in the floor, engraved, flat or worn flat.
Those are burial stones on graves for the rich ones. We call them "stinky rich". I think you can guess where tat expression came from...😉
At 9:45 Many of them are café's or restaurants. They originally were storage entrances to the merchant houses behind them since transport went mostly by water.👀

Because the water is at a lower level in Utrecht, where other cities have the actual street level next to the canal, the Utrecht canals have wharf cellars next to them, where merchants would store their goods.
The actual shops, as in the other cities, would be at street level.
Because of this, nowadays there are quite a few nice restaurants and cafes where there used to be wharf cellars.
In other cities, you'd be sitting on the street with cars passing by but here you just have the canal next to your table.
Utrecht also marked the most northern border of the Roman empire on the European mainland.
From time to time, archaelogists have uncovered Roman trade ships that were in astonishingly good condition, with the wood and even ropes well preserved.
You may find an episode about one of those ships on the "Time Team" series.

In a way its sad but also just purely part of our history, the protestant reformation stripped a lot of churches from their splendor.
9:30 these are connected to the corresponding building on the street like a basement. It can be sold to restaurants/cafe's etc but in essence it is just a basement extendending below the road to the canal.

That's my Hometown, the market is on Thursday and Saturday only. The center is completely walkable and you're not allowed to bike there, there are 'stadwachten' which is not real police but they can give you a fine for cycling. You can walk with a bike on hand though. There's a lot of history in the city which is also like a village. When I go into the city I mostly bump into a acquaintance so Utrecht is not that big lol . I live outside the city center 5km.

This was fun. Thanks for my 2nd visit to Utrecht. {First was in 1977} - Yes That old! Loved the markets back then too. My Tante used to work in a Cake & Sweet shop - visited often! I remember the hand made dark chocolate Advocaat Liqueur sweets particularly... YUM!
    Which reminds me - - -
Asked for the written recipe to make Advocaat - & carried it home on a tattered scrap of paper in my backpack to Aussieland -but something got lost in translation. Was making it up & thinking 'something not quite right here... ' but 'soldiered on'. That's right... Wound up with sweet alcoholic scrambled eggs. The note said: 1 Dzn Eggs. Maybe the few shots of brandy before cooking ( in me - not the pot) had something to do with this outcome.( Oops! ) Gave up & chucked the lot out the door to the farmyard where- 1/2 hour later -noticed some of my chickens & ducks staggering about & falling over. ( Double Oops!)
    Cheers L

Yeah pity that they f.e don't tell that the tower ( domtoren) with the passage, the square behind it and the building with the art piece on it were actually once one big cathedral, but the middle collapsed. Utrecht is a very important historical city and the capital of Dutch Catholicism. There is so much history there. Kinda stupid to not explain any of that.

5:00 one of those bridges actually has a cool (and dark) history! There is a stone under the bridge that shows a woman.
That is because waaaay back there was a woman who was so ashamed to be a bastard child that she had a small room made that she would live in. The room being underneath/next to that bridge. There was no door or way for her to leave, just a small hole that people could serve food through and deliver letters.
She would use these letters to convey the 'message of god' and give advise, since the only other thing she could do was read the bible.
On a completely different note: there is also a cafe in an old church in Utrecht
9:45 those are restaurants. Since this was filmed in winter they wouldnt have the terrace out all the time, but they are good places to have dinner and enjoy the atmosphere.
