Hello Sue, this was by far John Miles best song, which was a hit in the UK in the mid 1970s. He later went on to be a backing musician for the likes of Eric Clapton & Tina Turner, amongst others. He passed away in the last couple of years. If you want to hear another of his songs, try The Right To Sing. The Proms are a UK annual festival of Classical music, running from July to September in the Royal Albert Hall. In more recent years, it has extended to have the last night in parks in various cities around the UK & has diversified the music to include some music that has links to the classical genre. Have a search of Last Night Of The Proms on RUclips to get an idea.
I just saw him are RUclips video singing with Jimmy in a concert in 1988! He sounded great, a lot like Robert plant ! A Big great voice!! I think I remember back then ,him doing some chores with Jimmy ..I had forgot about it. 🎶🎸🐦
Night of the proms is held in holland germany and Belgium. Mixture of pop and classical.lots of john on RUclips. Alan parsons has john on a few of his albums doing vocals. Glad you like the maestro.
So let me give you some background on John and the Night of Proms. John Miles is an incredible artist: top singer, top guitarist and pianist, wonderful orchestra conductor, amazing composer. He participated to the Alan Parson’s Project album (Alan Parson produced his records including this Music masterpiece). He was also a partner of crime of Led Zeppelin: he played guitar for them on some of their tours and also for Jimmy Page when he had some solo tours. He even wrote songs for Jimmy. He was music director for Tina Turner or Joe Cocker and made some duets with them. Remember Night Calls of Joe Cocker? He played guitar, keyboards, organ, beats, backing vocals on 3 songs in this album. Music, released in 1976, was a massive hit across europe and became THE anthem for music lovers. He tried to encapsulate different genres of music into a single composition and god, it works perfectly. It was prevented to succeed in the US because he refused to shorten it, US Radios did not want a long song as they wanted to push ads. Night of the Proms is a series of concerts held annually in Belgium (since 1985), the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg. Regularly there are also shows in France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Denmark, the United States and Sweden. The concerts consist of pop music and popular classical music (often combined) and various well-known musicians and groups usually participate. During decades John Miles has led the orchestra for these events and he also used to end the show by singing Music as the last song. John died in Dec 2021. R.I.P. dear John.
Wow! That is incredible! Thank you so much, Eric. He is clearly extraordinarily talented. I can't believe that I have never heard of him with all the famous people he has worked with. Unbelievable! I really appreciate the backstory 🤩
@@playitagainsue yes indeed 😀 His solo career suffered from the punk wave. But he transformed himself as a music wizard for other artists. I posted another comment with a link to a stunning cover he made of Stairway to Heaven, with a pair of classical guitarists twins, and Sharon Den Adel (from Within Temptation). It is apparently murmured that Jimmy Page was at the same time a friend of John and very jealous of his immense musical abilities.

This is my favourite song of all time, it's an incredible masterpiece, I have requested it be played at my funeral (whenever that may be). I'm also pleased to see the Erasure and Depeche Mode sleeves behind you.
Hi Shaun, it is a masterpiece! It is composed like a classical piece. I see why you would want this played at your funeral. Glad you like my albums....love the British 1980s bands 🤩💜
@@playitagainsue as a Brit I'm pleased to hear that. As for Erasure, I've been a huge fan since their very early days, I even had a charity donation from Andy Bell once for a skydive I did a few years ago.
He was a brilliant composer, unfortunately got never the respect he should've earned for his work... Still love this masterpiece!!! With this orchestra it's above all limits...
Hi Horst, you are so right that he didn't get enough recognition because I have never heard of him before this and what a shame that is. This is a masterpiece for sure. Thanks so much for tuning in 😊
RIP John Miles. Brilliant composer, singer, pianist and guitarist, and later lead guitarist and musical arranger for Tina Turner. If you like this check out his songs Fella in the Cellar, When You Lose Someone So Young and Music Man, plus, also live from the Electric Proms, La Sagrada Familia and After the Magic Has Gone
First heard this in 1976 after buying his debut album, Rebel, which had a minor hit single, "Highfly ", on the U.S. charts. His highest charting US single was "Slow Down", which reached #34 on the Top 40, and #2 on the Disco chart. He also hit the American Top 40 singing lead on the Alan Parsons Project first hit single, " The System Of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether ", which reached #37 in 1976. John achieved much more success in the UK and Europe, but his first 3, mid to late 70's albums are very good, and please check out the song "Time", from the 2nd LP, Stranger in the City. It's a beautiful song, also.
@playitagainsue Your welcome.. He has a lot of great songs that very few have heard. Some Rockers and some ballads. Another heart tugger from the first LP is "When You Lose Someone So Young".
Hi, Sue. Been off-line for a while - health probs. Have to excuse me if I disappear from time to time. R.I.P. Mr. Music. What a talent. When you consider there was basically 1 vocal verse, and he turned that one verse into a song of epic proportions. Incredible. Sadly, we never met. I'm well into my 70's now, and probably not much longer for this world, and as an ex-musician for most of my life I've left instructions for this to be played on the conclusion of my funeral. Thanks for posting, keep well.
Hi Robert, I am here everyday so whenever you are around, I am here. What a lovely song to have chosen for the end and so fitting since you are a musician yourself 🥰
The late John Miles, such a loss at a relatively young age. Best remembered for this track, Music. The audience loved him. The Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall. Please check out some of the Last Night of the Proms videos here on RUclips.

His early songs are amazing, from 1975 to 1983. Saw him at Nottingham in 1983 or 1984 but subsequently he seemed to fade into obscurity. I meddle a bit on the guitar and his music is hard to emulate…which is why he was one of the greatest and sadly underrated musicians. Mainly he composed the melodies and bassist Bob Marshall wrote the lyrics
