I don't have a problem with older language and pictures, I see as an opportunity for education and vocabulary expansion. Children back then understood so modern day children would be able to as well as with exposure. However, yes city children especially won't understand it all. And so a balance is what I seek for. A mix of modern and vintage stories for example. Great video :)
I LOVE your videos, please keep them coming ! I’m getting everything ready for my daughters second grade with MFW , but a dear friend hand me down some classical materials she did with her mega smart kids , and I’m so torn (with language and arts) . This review was so nice and balanced , again, thank you so much ! I believe Masterbook is a little bit more advanced than MFW LA, but slower paced than classicals like Well trained mind stuff .
Fantastic review! My 1st grader came from a christian school using Bob Jones and it was so overwhelming for him. When we took a long month vacation the teacher packaged all his work for us to take and WOW! Heavy on the worksheets! I am now homeschooling and we are using masterbooks LLFLE 1 and it has been a breath of fresh air.
You did such a great job exploring the pluses and minuses of each curriculum. We had our oldest choose between Queen and Masterbooks for 2nd grade and she chose Masterbooks. She is now in the upper levels and it is getting more challenging for her so I was thinking of switching to Queens, but Masterbooks is an excellent curriculum overall. It's hard to choose but I never thought of the pictures in Queens being too old fashioned. Maybe that is why my child chose Masterbooks - she may have liked the illustrations better. Thank you.
Which would you suggest: Queen Elementary LA or Language Lessons for Today? I’m having trouble deciding between the two for my 11 year old next year. Thank you! Appreciate this video!
They are both great choices. With Queen your child will write inside the actual workbooks; each child needs their own. With Lang Lessons for Today, your child copies out of it using something like a spiral notebook so the actual book can be used for multiple children. Neither contain any spelling. Hope this helps.
I loved this! Thank you. What curriculum so you use to teach LA/Spelling/Grammer. I am coming from 1 yr of Abeka but want something thorough but gentler.
@@OfficialHomeschoolGems We are using Abeka for K5 and 2nd, but will be going 1st and 3rd. The problem I'm facing is that the CM curriculum for their grade level doesn't cover what my kids already know, since Abeka is ahead.
@@bethdouglas3796 yes, I can see you having that issue :) For your 1st grader you’re still going to want phonics instruction...by 3rd it’s grammar, spelling, writing. I would suggest looking into Queen Homeschool Language Lessons because their workbooks are more level-based than grades. Masterbooks also goes by levels; you would want to go one level up with MB.
My current second grader will tell you that Masterbooks is the most fun out of them all :) If I were to homeschool my teens all over again, I would make sure they were enjoying their work a lot more.
It’s deep and will get your student thinking about concepts/ideas much differently than something like Abeka. If you watch the full video, I share about it! :)
Thanks! I taught my youngest using My Father's World curriculum, but even before Kindergarten we used Delightful Reading kits 1&2 from Simply Charlotte Mason to play fun phonics games :)
I don't understand why "children in 2020" have nothing to gain or learn from classic photos or vintage words. Also it's crazy to think children in a city can't relate to farm animals / farm life, when many children in rural areas are well versed in city living. It's just an odd thought process.
Not an accurate description of Abeka . Because you really need the lesson plans to teach correctly. Is not open an ago is just like BJU. Teacher intensive.

Thank you for sharing our "Language Lessons" series!
VERY well done! I hope this video gains some traction because it deserves it.
Amanda Gardiner Thank you so much!!
This was EXTREMELY helpful! I loved the way you put it together
I'm so glad it was helpful to you!
Thank you so much for this video. Struggled to find many videos especially recent ones on queen homeschooling. 😁

I love this and it’s the first review I’ve found of several curriculums at once. Thank you!!!

You’re welcome :) Yes, Masterbooks is definitely more modern.
I see that this is an older video, but your explanations were very helpful- well thought out, thorough, but still concise. Thank you!
You’re welcome. I am probably over due for an updated video on language arts :)
New to you channel and really like your content. What philosophy do you most align with?
“On a sheep farm” 😂 love that!
Dre - haha thank you. I guess I would say we are modern Charlotte Mason style homeschoolers 😁
Grace and Glory Home Schooling I like that idea. I’m going to email you 😊
Thank you! This was very useful for me as I balance my teaching style with the way my child learns.
So glad it was helpful!
Impressive reviews - thank you so much
You’re welcome!
I’m super curious about the 5 you didn’t get to. Thank you for this review. Super helpful.
So glad it was helpful!
Awesome video!! I have been looking for a great CM language arts program, and I love your pros/cons approach to describing them!! 🙂
Thank you!
This video helps me SO much! Thank you.

I use different curriculum for different grade levels. What grade will your child be in the coming year?

I keep eyeing SCM language arts.. what are your thoughts on it?

Good point. My family farms and lives in the country. So, my kids relate to anything like this. And my kids love historic pictures! So do I!

I had used Abeka and BJU many years so this is my opinion of them. Thank you
