i've seen Aurea that run and others that stay grouped, it depend of the exposure, water, soil etc... but they can run a lot and far, i've seen Aurea shots at 10-13 meters from the main bush. I've not seen many nigra correctly developped, but the few i've seen were not running much, only few runners and not far at all, maybe 1meter away but i think they should run more if they're in good conditions.
I always say, they are Phyllostachys so should be treated as such Both nigra and aurea can stay as a clump for many years, then off they go So dependent on conditions though! My Nigra has more growth this year than its ever had, I suspect it has used a lot of energy this year and may flower soon
Lovely specimen, may I ask, how to you keep them growing so straight, mine comes out in all angles. Also do you cut out the thin culms? Mine has culms of all thicknesses and I’m hoping it starts producing thicker ones, it’s on its second year in the ground. Thanks for the help.
@@montongarden thank you, are the culms growing out at a 45* angle the edge of my current rhizome! Do you just prune your thinnest culms after removing damaged ones? And does bamboo reshoot from where you prune in the future?
@@MrBandit90no, dont cut the small culms, even less if your bamboo is young. You'll cut them latter if you want when he'll be bigger. Only remoove the deads. Once you cut them they'll not grow back, new ones will grow but not from the same spot. The quantity of culms a rizhome can make is predefined and limited. But the rizhome will grow a new rizhome so it's endless if you do nothing about it.
I planted a Vivax with root barrier a few weeks ago and I was very interested to see how far the runners have gone in your garden. Would you say they are mostly surface level In the first few inches of soil? Our barrier is 40cm deep and 10cm above the ground
Hi, the rhizome that has gone furthest is fairly shallow But I would be going round the inside of the barrier with a spade a couple of times later in the year Once the new culms are up it will make rhizome and it may not appear, but you will find it with a spade by gently digging in
The protection you get with a barrier is limited. A rizhome have no problem going several metters deep to pass an obstacle. Have you installed the barrier with a 15° angle to drive the rizhomes up ? I've dig a trench around my Viridiglaucescens and some rizhomes were 30cm deep. It's a 20-30yo bamboo that was growing almost free, we just cutted the grass around and the culms that were shot every years, some shots were 15m away from the main plant. A trench work much better than a barrier. A barrier work for a few years untill it's to full of rizhomes and they start going under. With a trench they're free to grow so they dont go deep and you can cut them in the trench so they dont fill the "area" with rizhomes. With the barrier the rizhome will grow in circle inside untill it get to full and start passing under.
@@drefhill I have used an angle to drive them up, but nothing too scientific. As the plant is young at the moment hopefully it will occupy the space without sending rhizomes deep. I will inspect it next year to check. Thanks for your input.
@@montongardenthe rizhomes are shallow only if they're free to run as they want. I've just digged a trench arround mine "Viridiglaucescens" to limit it and i've found rizhomes down to 30cm under the surface, most were between surface and 10cm. But if you install a barrier they can go very deep, once they hit the barrier they'll go down untill passing under. The barrier need to be installed with at least a 15° angle to drive the rizhomes up. But the protection a barrier offer is limited. The best is to plant them 50cm above the ground level or dig a 10cm wide trench all around and cut the rizhomes that go thru once every year or 2.
Lovely plant. I have them as a privacy screen running along a border. planted 14 months ago and it's booming this year. loves to grow!!
Yes, they grow well once established, but you’ve got to keep an eye on them!
They are lovely bamboo without a doubt
Yes and it’s still small!
Good to see the P. Vivax in the flesh so to speak. Shame my garden isn't big enough. Though the front garden hasn't been done yet. 😂

Hi, this is year 3 and yes I will thin out the older culms, very soon
You always get the odd culm that grows at an odd angle but most are straight

what zone are you in? how cold yoor winters get?
Zone 8, can get cold, doesn’t make any difference with these, it’s summer heat that helps more

What do you recommend as a barrier? Thanks
I don’t use one, but they are available from places such as Scottish Bamboo and the size they use is fine, the rhizome is fairly shallow

Fout vivax heeft groene streep...dat aurea geel.
This is vivax
Knip 4 stengels af..rest met scherpe spa.
I’m waiting to see what comes up, then will cut rhizomes where needed, leave for 6 weeks and pot up divisions
