This piece was commissioned from an American composer, Lane Harder, by ISGM New Music Commissioning Fund for Makoto Nakura in 2018. Written for solo marimba and percussion quartet, this concerto-like work is based on a legend in Oaxaca, Mexico. A solemn conductus from the 12th century France, which was used in the coronation of Luis IX, is transformed into joyful Mexican marimba music as this piece progresses. One can hear the wide range of expression in this percussion ensemble piece; from a highly sophisticated harmony in the first half to raw, powerful percussion playing in the fashion of folk music in the second half. It was premiered by Makoto Nakura and Percussion Group 72 in their tour at Kobe Bunka Hall (9/1/2018) and Tokyo's Gotanda Bunka Center (9/4) where this video was recorded.
