At the FMEA Annual Conference in Tampa, FL, and attended a clinic today by THIS band and its conductor, Rhett Cox. Their clinic was about this very performance, where this was their 2nd of 3 pieces at their District Band "festival" (MPA-Music Performance Assessment, in Florida)--without a conductor, and from memory. A very moving clinic this afternoon, where they played another, shorter piece...without a conductor, and from memory. What a fine ensemble. BTW, at the very beginning of this clip, that's Mr. Cox walking away from the podium to the left, where he took a seat in a chair in the back of the band, so he could be "with them" on stage. There's a bigger story to how and why they did this, but you'll have to find that out elsewhere. Just enjoy this performance...which evidently got a rousing standing ovation. And THEN, they had to play their 3rd piece, Armenian Dances (which can also be found on RUclips.)

Rhett is a former classmate of mine at Western Illinois University. What an amazing performance. Congratulations.

On my lunch break and I'm in tears. Got to pull it together to walk back in the office. This is spellbindingly beautiful.

Beautiful! Love watching the musicians playing with the physical emotion of the piece, rather than sitting like statues! Great job!

I'm not crying! You're crying! (sniff) Just stunningly beautiful. I've never heard this for orchestra before, just the choral version. Amazing.

I thought the oboe player was going to pull muscle… way too much motion.

Where's the conductor? The English Horn guy seems to be directing them.

Orlando Vasquez they're all directing each other. That's the whole point the director is in the ensemble and together the ensemble is watching each other and feeling the music. It's wonderful!

Very nice. I wish Choirs could sing this without music or a director...Oh wait, they do it all the time. 😎
