  • This may be of minor interest but I was asked how come my ring was not getting smaller on my left hand as I tat my stitches... So here's a short video that explains what's going on with the left hand when tatting a ring.

      Hello Silvia, all you need to get started is one shuttle and a ball of thread. It depends where you are based of course, but if you have a craft shop near you, then they may have shuttles (though not everywhere carries them). For the thread it can be a crochet cotton but ideally you want a tight twist and a very smooth thread so that the knots slide easily (I use Lizbeth a lot but Babylo is also very good). Online tatting shops such as Handy Hands if you are in the US are great.

    My pinky finger alone is not enough in order to open up the ring, while I do have success with this, I need to also use my ring finger as well. Also I have noticed that you need to be holding all of the stitches, if you dont, and try and open the ring it will move and mess up your stitches. I find it works well with lizbeth, not so much other craft store threads. Do you have any other like tips, because I have been practicing for a while, and im trying to stop depending on my ring finger, because it makes my most recent stitch smaller.

      Hello, do you meant tips for opening the ring as you work? Many people stop and use their other hand to pull on the core thread to make more room in the ring but I like not to stop! Perhaps you tat more tightly than me? I'm not sure, I want to help but it can be difficult to advise without seeing what you're doing and I'm not 100% sure I understand your question.

      @@11Frivole Sorry I didn’t review my comment well enough. I have issues opening the ring with just my little finger. How do hold your ring? Because I noticed that you don’t rest your ring finger on the ring, and I do. Is there a certain hand posture you use?

      @@christiancolla3511 Hello, it's a bit hard to explain better in words than demonstrating in the video but you are right, I do not use my ring finger much at all. The middle finger holds the space to make the stitches, but the tension and the sliding of the stitches is all made with my index (and thumb to hold the stitches) and little finger.

    I wish you had used a black thread or a dark background so it would be easier to see. Thank you!

      Black can be hard to see as well. I'm always searching for the best combination so that there is some contrast with the background but also some contrast against my fingers and the colour of my hands. But I agree with you, a mid-blue is my most usual go-to colour of thread. I'll keep that in mind for future videos.

    I'm trying but it's not working. I'm using crochet cotton 20. I like your videos very much. You are very good at tatting. Thank you

      Hi Suzanne, thank you for your comment, but what's not working? Where are you having difficulty?

    • @suzannejones5992

      @@11Frivole wow thanks for replying. Firstly I'd like to say that you inspire me and my desire to tat is strong. Now. I wrap my left hand for a ring and place it in the pinch. For the first one or two stitches I have the thread as short as I can. I have tried to slip the stitches forward and pull the ring thread with my little finger and it does not move. I make sure it is running freely and try and relax my hands. No, it's not working for me and I really can't see what I don't wrong.

      @@suzannejones5992 Hi Suzanne, it sounds to me like your knots are not flipped correctly (though it can be a little difficult to picture what you are doing without actually seeing it!) I wouldn't worry about this video so much but concentrate first on the main "Tatting for Beginners - Transferring the Knot" video. As you are working, make sure each half stitch still slides on the core thread. As soon as it doesn't slide, undo the half stitch and do it again, making sure it is "flipped" correctly and the stitches still slide. I really hope you'll persevere and that it will fall into place for you. :-)

    How do u know how much thread to wind on the shuttle?

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  4 года назад

      Hello, it depends on what you are tatting really. If you're working on a large piece, you would fill your shuttle full. If it's a small motif, you have to guess and wind a bit more than you think you might need because it's annoying to run out of thread near the end! But it's usually a bit of guesswork. :-)
