- One of my most favorite things about teaching dance fitness is that I am able to challenge myself and learn many new disciplines of dance.
For example, if I hear a song that is popular that may have an African sounding beat, I am able to learn movement that exists in that genre to implement in my class and in my choreography.
It keeps the class from becoming boring and constantly teaches the participants new styles of movement that are unique, fun and special!
One of my biggest issues with some of the Custom dance format, such as Zumba and MixxedFit is that they want you to apply certain moves to any song so to me it feels very square peg in a round hole. The music should dictate the movement, not the other way around.
For this particular song, I’m a big fan of JoJo and everybody remembers this Uncle Luke sample from back in the day. I instantly felt a very feminine and soft lyric and vocal delivery paired with a masculine and hard hitting hip-hop beat.
I wanted to challenge myself to do something. I have never done in 28 years of teaching dance was to apply a ballet aesthetic in the movement with my hip-hop class. As you should see in the routine, I think I achieve that by ping-ponging back-and-forth between very soft movements that have a ballet feel to them with them. Very strong and hard hitting hip-hop moves immediately after.
I just think it’s something different. That will be polarizing. Some will like and some won’t but it was different and I’m proud of myself for stepping outside of not only my own comfort zone, but the comfort zone of the Dance fitness industry in general
Thank you for taking time to watch as always. Any support is so appreciated and I love you all
