One thing about these docks is not only will it work with Switch and Steamdeck, but anything with a USB-C video output. I've gotten IPads and Galaxy Tabs to work with my external monitor with no problems whatsover. These are awesome for travelling.
u can charge something like a pro controller to any random USB port. doesnt have to be connected to the dock. itll charge while being bluetooth connected to the switch.
@@newp0rt it's so much better charging with another charger. Especially if you got one built into your couch. You get pretty much the freedom of wireless controllers but never need to worry about charging it.
I've been using my Covert Dock fairly consistently since I got it at the start of last year, and it's been serving me very well as both a travel dock for the Switch, as well as leaving it next to my TV in the basement as a secondary dock in the house. I do recommend using it in conjunction with some sort of tabletop stand so then the Switch has the air intake vents on the back open, Genki themselves makes a very portable switch-blade style stand that I highly recommend if you are getting the dock
Mine stopped sending a video signal within a few months with very limited use. It still works as a charger (and sends audio), but I won't be buying another dock from them.
I just converted a regular switch dock into a mini one with the case from Amazon instead of getting this. I love taking it on the go and having 3 usb ports is very nice and it very easy to move
I have both the Covert Dock and Mini Covert Dock. I like keeping the regular covert dock with cables in my travel electronics bag for when I go anywhere I have I fly to. This has been used to help me setup a good docking situation when at Disneyland and other hotels while I travel and my kids love that when we get to the hotel they can go right into playing video games to relax. The mini is in my more purse switch bag which goes with me whenever I leave my house. I have been at the doctors office and been able to just plug it into the wall and charge while playing, while waiting at appointments. Each has it's great uses.
I have this portable monitor that has 2 USB C ports. Somehow plugging in a power adapter and a the switch on each of the ports allows the switch to project as if in docked mode. It even does pass through charging. I used it that a way a couple of times but it makes me a bit nervous lol
As much as I love Genki products, the slow charge situation rules out either of them being a viable alternative to the Steam Deck power supply. Too bad :(
The best combo is the Genki Covert Dock and the Genki Bluetooth Audio kit. It has a kick stand like item they pair well and it helps keep the switch cool. Genki has been the best company for quality portable docks.
I am planning on buying one of these and i recently started using a PowerA wireless controller for my Switch instead just i wanted to have an option of using my Switch in my bedroom as well as in my living room without having to drag around the dock with me and to be honest i would like to have my Switch in my room with this and a stand to hold it into place.
I have a HDMI to usb c cable with an extra usb c and a input which was loads cheaper than the covert dock. I’ve coupled this with a 20w folding usb c charger from made in mind which works much better for me
from what ive seen on this review. once the slightly larger one gets 4k there is 0 reason to get the slightly smaller one and lose out on optional usbA
I wish they'd have send you multi region versions, I'd like to see how they manage to pull this off on the Aussie model, since you can't fold our prongs
On the original covert dock they have adapters that connect while the prongs are folded up. They fit incredibly snugly on the device and aren't foldable. They add significantly to the size. But they do work.
@@MarkGibbons I don't think there really is a better solution to making it internationally useful. Once the attachments are on it does feel like an integrated system. I don't like how difficult they are to take off though.
Does the genki covert dock mini with the usb c cord that comes with it fit in the back of the steam deck case? I'm talking about the one that comes with the steam deck, and can you also fit an HDMI there?
Why doesn’t Nintendo work with tv manufacturers and make tvs with usb c ports on the tv. So all you gotta do is plug directly in. Have the usb a port on the tv to accept controllers and have the Ethernet port on the tv to transfer to the usb c.
@@po-tay-toes_boil-em I remember a thick old projection tv that had a proprietary connection for the 1st Xbox. Do you remember something like that from early 2000s?
This seems like a miss to me. The only real advantage I see is that it's smaller, but is it smaller enough? I can't imagine a situation where I would want a dock, but my covert dock is too big, and this dock isn't. And in order to achieve this smaller size (again, the usefulness of which is dubious) you get a weaker charger and no USB A port? If you didn't already have a Covert dock, could never see yourself wanting to use the USB A port, and only wanted it for the switch, I guess this makes sense? But if you already have a covert dock, this is a pass. If you want the USB A port, this is a pass, if you want to use it with your Steamdeck or MacBook this is a pass.
This is a terrible fit for the steam deck because you mentioned 4k. The steamdeck might do 4k with like Shovel Knight. Anything else is a heck no unless your upscaling it. I agree it's a cool use case, but not being able to charge it while you play is a deal breaker.
It's also a terrible fit because it only offers 20w worth charging, which means even if you're ok with not going with 4k you're still hamstringing yourself in what games you can play in order to keep your tdp below 20w unless you don't care about draining the battery while docked with this.
Does this new covert dock work for the Nintendo switch OLED? I used my old dock with the original switch flawlessly for quite a while but now that I have the newer OLED switch it's almost unusable and hardly ever works
What exactly is unusable and hardly ever works? Sorry I know it’s a year old , but looking at getting a second dock for the oled and read that all Nintendo first party docks are good from v1 switch - oled 😅
