Recreating Ina Garten's Lobster Pot Pie From Taste | Reverse Engineering | Bon Appétit

  • We challenged resident Bon Appétit supertaster Chris Morocco to recreate Ina Garten's lobster pot pie recipe in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen. The catch? He'll have to identify what he's making with a blindfold over his eyes, letting each of his other senses guide the way. Will Chris be able to reproduce each step the Barefoot Contessa takes without seeing the final product?

Nah I don't think so getting the appearance right was more so the puffiness of the pastry than the 5 cuts, the reason its so low is because the appearance is pretty easy to tell what it's supposed to be, for some other dishes the appearance is a lot more complex so slight variations won't lead to a huge cut in score but when it's extremely simplistic like a pie in the very same pot the margins are much smaller.

Why does scoring seem to get more unfair each episode? Love this series but it kinda annoying to see him get so low balled after more than successfully creating the dish.

Any way we could get a behind the scenes. It’s crazy how talented he is that it’s to the point of unbelievable. I trust Chris but would love to see what he goes through

I think the appearance score was really severe. I’d say 90% at least. I couldn’t tell the difference between them.

Although the dish was definitely more on the challenging side as far as these go, it seems the judging was a bit severe, especially in appearance. He ended somewhere around a B- in my mind.

If I had a choice between Ina's and Chris's, I'd choose Chris's first version. I appreciated that he used the lobster shell to make his stock. The fact that he could not tell there was fish stock in Ina's version indicates it didn't have much flavor. Good for Chris that he can make a crust without a recipe! I've been making pies for many years and still use a recipe every time.
