If we knew at the time how good these guys would be. McDavid and Matthews are the two best players in the NHL and the way this team helped usher in the new wave of talent was perfect

I'm sure the USA wanted to as well. I'm sure Russia wanted to beat Canada in Sochi and in Vancouver as well.
Russians also wanted to win in Quebec in 2008 in IIHF WC finals and they did. You never know.

I think they should rename the Tournament/Trophy after Gordie Howe so that you can freely use teams like NA and Europe without giving people the excuse to whine about "It's a World Cup, NA and Europe aren't countries"

A Team Europe actually makes a lot of sense. For instance, Kopitar and Zuccarello could flat out not play without a Team Europe. There are just so many countries in Europe, and just because each country does not have a full roster of players does not mean they don't each have some great ones who deserve to play.

A team USSR would be kind of nuts. Nobody wants to remember how bad it was to its people, and how it always threatened other countries around the world. It wanted to fight people and was an enemy of the US.
Greer Fried it's not about how it threaten the west and it's not suppose to be political. Just an honor of the great era Soviet dominate of hockey . About remembering the great players from the past. Kharlamov, yakushev, kasatonov, larionov, fetisov. Czechoslovakia also had great players back then like Dom hasek, Bobby holik Josef malacek, Vladimir Dzurilla, jaroslav pouzar.
That tiebreaker is sooo stupid. "Russia advanced because they beat NA" yeah but NA beat Sweden and Sweden beat Russia....doesn''t make any sense...
TheGreenBasturd I meant that the tiebreaker thing is stupid. Because Russia beat NA, means they are better? But Russia got beaten by Sweden and NA beat Sweden, so by this logic, NA is better than Russia...So the tiebreaker thing is just doesn't make sense.

TheGreenBasturd Well now you get it, it doesn't make sense. And yes we can put Sweden in the mix, they are the reference cause they won that group. Since they are the best team, who beat them? NA. But even then...I don't like that tiebreaker. Goal differential is a better tiebreaker and NA and Russia had the same +3 GD. So what I would've liked to see was a sudden death OT Russia vs Finland, if Finland scores during that OT it gives Russia a +2 GD so NA advances, if Russia scores during the OT, the are +4 and they advance.
Shin547 I also thought so, but thats not the case, the tiebreaker was Russia had beaten NA, so they would advance even if it got to OT vs Finland
TheGreenBasturd You said it yourself that tiebreaker is stupid, you can't judge a team's tournament outcome by a previous loss to another team. They strictly go with other stats like goal differential and regulation wins, it would make more sense than this tiebreaker.

We all know how it will end Sweden vs Canada in the final and then Canada wins over Sweden in 2 matches in row
TNA was fun to watch, and I attended that crazy TNA v Sweden game, but I never really bought into the concept. At least Team Europe consisted of players from countries who didn't have national teams in the tournament.
Sweden is definitely going to the finals. Unless they completely crap their own pants, there's no way they are losing to Europe. I, a shamelessly bitter Team USA and Washington Capitals fan, would love to see the Russians beat Canada and advance. BUT I don't see it happening.

TheGreenBasturd Not at all. Without the lockouts, he could've had the chance to tie or pass or get really close to Gretzky's record. He still has a very good chance too

To be honest, I wouldn't be that upset if they discontinue Team NA. Yes; I bought a bunch of NA merch, and I was extremely disappointed when they lost, but I think that was one of the most unique and exciting hockey experiences I think I have ever had.

There's a line between structure and strategy and then fun. You need to be smart, but you won't get anywhere from playing percentage and numbers TOO much.
also, this is EXACTLY what team USA needed. they needed fun. its absolutely not about fun anymore, its about beating canada. i thought that was the way to do it after that first prelim game, then it all went wrong. we need Johnny hockey, we need Mathews, we need Saad. hell we need their coaches, Torts is a goddamn joke.
we´ll see how you make it against Sweden. Without Backstrom denied access to the arena.

I was at the Russia game.
Wanted USA to win but low key team NA was exciting, but I'd rather see Russia in the semifinals now cause there's more Lightning players on Russia. Also Sweden>NA cause Heddy & Strals.
I've watched every game, and yeah team NA was fun to watch but since both NA and USA are out Id like to see Sweden advance to the finals because Hedman and Strålman on it, two of my favorite players.

I don't think Karlsson or Hedman were beat very many times. And Hjalmarsson or Ekholm are their best dman defensively
as a Russian-Canadian, I enjoyed Russia vs Canada ALOT! aside from that we had Massive war at home... Ovi No matters what will be number 1 Russian ever to play hockey, even into come out of Europe. Crosby best in the world, I think Crosby did what a real a captain and real leader and role model should do within every game in this. where he went the goals followed. tbh Ovi and Crosby are equally big legends! and will be remembered to me like Slava Fetisov, Alexei Kasatonov , Sergei Makarov,Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov did to my father.
