The GT4 is 50 percent more powerful, and is built as a road legal race car, so it is more fun and is faster than the Golf GTi. Both cars are fun to drive, with different qualities to enjoy, but should not be compared. Also remember you can buy about 4 Golf GTi for the cost of 1 GT4.
Just to add... How did you find the gear ratios? I have heard criticism of the gearing being a bit tall and I noticed you didn't wring the lower gears out (might have been the owners being present haha)
I pulled above 7,000 rpm. Yes the gears are more for GT use, but all you need is a drop in the final drive ratio and the car is ready to go racing. The base car handles very well, and I think Porsche didn't want to put the 911 to shame, because this car really can do it with the right gearbox.

What this car needs is a lowered final drive, which I am sure they have Gear ratios are a bit long, so you can see 2nd gear can go really very high.
