    I am 4th generation German in the midwest USA, My husband is 9th generation on his mutter's side. Both our families immigrated as farmers.
    My husband's family still farms, and when we visit they always call the guys in from the fields for coffee. The coffee is always strong and the desserts are always good - and very plentiful!

    Mary Beth I learn so much from you about Germany and your love for celebrating with family and friends.You have given me a desire to bring out (and wash) dust off my special pieces to celebrate with my
    friends (I've called an old friend yesterday and she's coming over Tuesday!) and even use some of the special techniques to include a German accent of style of celebration. I'm watching all your videos and enjoying myself so much thank you for sharing your knowledge of Germany and how to keep elegance in our life for our family and for MYSELF too!

      It takes all of us to keep tabletop interesting and classy. I want to make vintage china, crystal, and silver popular again. Missing our friends and family in Germany. We can't wait to get back to our home there. It's been 2 years and we can hardly stand it. Hope to sneak over this summer if they open the border.

    Something I most look forward to post pandemic life is to have an elegant but unfussy gathering with friends. I like this alternative to the English tea time!

      It's a bit more streamlined with cakes. Surprisingly, I don't care for tea sandwiches. Sweets are the perfect afternoon treat.

    I am first generation Australian and half of my heritage is Dutch, I am very familiar with this type of morning coffee and afternoon tea and it is enjoyable. We usually have one type of cake that's not too heavy or some "speculaas" biscuits (cookies), and all year round the house has small simple arrangements of fresh cut flowers from the garden. The simplicity of this European way of taking tea & coffee means it's not an overwhelming thing to do, and that it can become part of your every day routine and also enhance it.

    Absolutely love this…I love learning how coffee and tea time are expressed around the world. My beloved grandmother purchased strawberry shortcakes for my birthday from a very popular German bakery near her home. I have never forgotten how delicious they were! Looking through my silverware collection I remembered I have a few pieces in the Hildesheimer Rose pattern; I am definitely going to look for a “cream spoon” now that I know its importance. Thank you♥️☕️🫖

    I'm from Killeen--about 4 hours from you--and because of the military, we have a fair number of German wives in our area...and because of that, we have a FABULOUS German bakery that always has wonderful traditional cakes and breads. (I don't have an oomlout on my laptop or I would have spelled auf Deutch.) My dad was in the Army, and we were stationed in Mannheim when I was in elementary school...such fond memories!!!

    I love this! I wish America had traditions like this, it would hugely improve quality of life to be able to slow down in the middle of the day with friends, coffee or tea, and treats.
    With kaffee und kuchen, does the hostess typically pour the coffee and serve the cake, or do guests help themselves?

    • @LadyMaryBeth
      @LadyMaryBeth  2 года назад +2

      There are so many cakes that the hostess usually serves the first slice for guests. After that, guests help themselves. Same with coffee. If it’s a large group seated at the table, it might be self-service.
