A very eco friendly yet good looking solution to gift wrapping is gift bags. Within family, we have a rule that almost everything gets “wrapped” into bags and we just make reusable tag with name from either some old calendar or wrapping paper. At the end of the night, we pick our gift bags from the pile and store them for the next year and just recycle the little tags and some paper string that closes the bags shut. You can make yourself some reusable tags I guess but we are a little too lazy for that. Not RV friendly since you gotta store the bags but for regular folks, I recommend. :)

My favorite brands of water bottles and tumblers are Camelbak and Yeti. Been using my plastic Camelbak water bottle for about a decade & had to replace the lid (the old ones would get a weird tacky feeling that wouldn’t wash off after a couple years) but it’s still going strong and I fully plan on getting a stainless steel one when the plastic finally kicks the bucket. One thing I love is the interchangeable lids since a stainless steel water bottle can be turned into a coffee or tea sipping cup or a straw cup. While I fully acknowledge there are other equally good tumbler brands I love the quality of my 30oz Yeti and especially the lids, I have an aluminum 16oz tumbler too and replaced the broken lid with a Magslide, the increase in heat retention was crazy. I am trying not to beat myself over it too much and im sure im not alone in the feeling. Maybe you could make a video about it, like how to deal with some swaps just not working for you and needing to find slighly more wasteful ways around it.
Reusable tissues: so I tried using some cut up soft tshirts and also regular woven cotton and found they are too rough for my nose. I don’t see anyone talking about this, has anyone else noticed this problem? I do intend on looking for a new fabric probably a rayon or something but have not yet put in the effort.
They don't seem very pleasant to me and are just as wasteful. They cannot be recycled due to blood being on them. BUT they are less harmful to create, sorta. It's quite nuanced so I would go applicator free or if you need an applicator, get Dame's reusable applicator :)
If your hair doesn't curl at all and stays as straight as in this video, you might have low porosity hair and just don't need much conditioning. This could be better for your hair too. Especially if you keep it short, therefore healthy straight from the scalp.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist then your hair is like mine, which is low porosity (I had it checked under a special machine at the trychologist when I had intense scalp psoriasis). You can use a mask or a conditioner when you are sleepin at a family or friends place lmao. Keeping it clean and cut is the best for us. You can try herbal rinses, very nice for low por hair. I have blond hair so I use chamomile, you brew it like tea and let it cool down and pour it after washing your hair normally and just let it dry as usual. This can dry out some hair but for me I do it every wash and it's fine. Since your hair is a bit darker than mine I would recommend chamomile (gives your hair ligher, golden reflexes), birch, mullein, elderflower, calendula (can give ginger or rust coloured refexes). If you don't mind the darkening, rosemary, thyme, nettle, horsetail, hibiscus (this can give you a pink/ginger tint), cinnamon (not to be used on scalp itself), burdock, lime tree (thats what the dictionary tells me it's called, but leaves from a tree of Tilia genus, not the tree producing lime fruit.), mint and soo many more. Generally if the brew is dark it will darken your hair, with young walnut it can almost dye for hair a rich brown. Another tip is using a "mask" made from honey, leave it on hair for some time, generally the longer the better and wash it out as usual. Given the amount of translating and looking up, the english speaking world is a bit behind when it comes to hair rinses, oiling and such lol. You can also do a sort of masking from plants that create Mucilage, such as the root of marshmallow plant, linen seed, flowers of Alcea rosea (common hollyhock), seeds of Fenugreek, flowers of Verbascum, leaf of Tussilago. You can choose any od those, boil it and it should create a sort of slime that you can use on your hair (any of those is used medicinally for sore throats and skin issues and such because of the slime that calms down irritations). I recommend keeping your hair covered so that it doesn't dry out though. If it sounds as fun to as it does to me, then you can buy or find wild Saponaria officinalis which has natural saponins and can be used as soap or shampoo and has been used that way for generations, very cool. You get the root and it looks like soap bubbling up, but fresh stem does it as well. If you are interested in oiling your hair I can share the information I gathered through trial and error regarding low por hair, sorry I wrote so much!
ALSO for hair washing, my grandmothers and older generations used raw egg before soaps and shampoos were avaliable. It has proteins which can make our hair very nice and healthy but you can also sort of "overprotein" your hair. I forgot to mention vinegar or acid based hair rinses, which makes the hair sleek and shiny because it closes the "scales" of hair. You can dilute apple or spirit vinegar and rinse as with herbal rinses, if you make your own vinegar (very easy, I can tell how I make them) you have to use more, depending on how acidic it is. But those I highly recommend for this type of hair

Hi, can you please recommend books about how to go zero waste? I watched your videos about books but they are to convince us go zero waste, not detailed instructions. I'm dying to know more details. I read some books on kindle but a huge chunk of those books focus on the story of the author. Haizzz, I need books that tell me how to make fertilizer out of food trash, what chemicals I should not have in my groceries because they're pollutants, which trees I should plant because they are good carbon sink,.. I'm really overwhelmed to the point my brain circuit just pause now. If you can help me find the book(s), I'd be so freakingly grateful, that'll be like helping me 1/2 way. I'm 100% invested but I'm so lost.
For books I'd recommend Don't Be Trashy or 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste. As for trees or plants that are good for the environment, look into what is native to your area; that way you can reduce the need to water plants as well as support the local ecosystem... and it still helps store carbon.
For the examples you give you might have better luck searching for topics like "homesteading" or "green living" instead of zero waste. I'd also recommend seeing if there is a folk school in your area that teaches hands-on workshops.
A great book about the trees to help store carbon would be Nature's Best Hope by Douglas Tallamy. It is about how you can help the environment by planting native trees and plants.
Story of stuff Cradle to cradle The story of more Plastic purge This changes everything Braiding sweetgrass This is vegan propaganda And search your library app for keywords: garden, compost, sustainability, permaculture
yup! which is why I don't really like it. Some brands are making bioplastic pleather out of things like pineapple, coconut, cactus, and that is super cool and definitely eco!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Do you have a video on bioplastic pleather? If not, would you be willing to make one? I'd love to hear more in-depth thoughts on this.
Yeah, I find it HIGHLY amusing (a more than a little sad) that pleather has been rebranded as “vegan leather.” Personal opinion, but if we are trying to be good stewards of the earth why are we producing products that are not biodegradable (with the theoretical exception of bio plastics) when we have farming byproducts that is biodegradable & would otherwise just be tossed out? I understand how problematic the meat industry is but believe we have been given animals to use & eat though I think a true “plant based” lifestyle where meat is an augmentation of the meal rather than the bulk of it would be the healthier choice (that’s another term that bugs me lol).
You mention hair products but what about body products? Face cream, body lotion, hand lotion??? I live in Canada and it is very humid in the summer and very VERY dry in the winter and I need my creams, LOL!!! I'm not sure about not using tissues??? Hankies seem sooooo gross to me... like what do you do with them after you blow your nose? Stick them up your sleeve like my Gram did, LOL!!! But seriously, I get if you just have a runny nose but when boogies are involved.....YUCK!!!
Yeah I simply don't use any haha just lotion from Plaine Products, idk if they ship to Canada tho :( Hankies are not gross, just carry a fabric bag to hold them in until you get home to dump them in the wash. Boaty has an amazing travel hankie kit!
I highly doubt it, but I will look it up! Even plastic-based vegan leather would be less than feeding a 2000 lb cow for years and years. BUT I would personally seek out plant-leather such as cactus, coconut, pineapple, etc. But at the end of the day I know it won't hold up working in the outdoors so I'm sticking to what is most sustainable for ME!
Girl, forget those haters! You’re amazing and you’re an inspiration!

Isn't vegan/faux leather just plastic?
yup! which is why I don't really like it. Some brands are making bioplastic pleather out of things like pineapple, coconut, cactus, and that is super cool and definitely eco!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Do you have a video on bioplastic pleather? If not, would you be willing to make one? I'd love to hear more in-depth thoughts on this.
oooh yes I'll add it to my brainstorm list!@@mj2625

Just use water
what are you talking about? I'm very confused>
@@junglesuperstar9270
Yeah I simply don't use any haha just lotion from Plaine Products, idk if they ship to Canada tho :( Hankies are not gross, just carry a fabric bag to hold them in until you get home to dump them in the wash. Boaty has an amazing travel hankie kit!
they wash super well!
I will have to check out Boaty or see if anyone in Canada makes reusable tissues.

Doesn’t vegan leather produce a TON of carbon? More than cow leather.
I highly doubt it, but I will look it up! Even plastic-based vegan leather would be less than feeding a 2000 lb cow for years and years. BUT I would personally seek out plant-leather such as cactus, coconut, pineapple, etc. But at the end of the day I know it won't hold up working in the outdoors so I'm sticking to what is most sustainable for ME!
i confess to five years of washing my uniforms with fabric softener 🫣
oh no!! haha it's probably fine
I think they say that about military uniforms cause it makes them more flammable and should you be in a harmful situation it could make it worse
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalisti was so desperate to make them softer until i finally decided i’d be wearing shorts and a waffle shirt every day 😂
hhahaha nice @@AprilCMango
