    Suddenly it's like you're there in the movie with them, the character played by Belmondo has just aknowledged me, the audience/viewer, am I part of the scene/film now?

    Actually, in retrospect, I don't think this was a true breaking of the fourth wall. Ferdinand was crazy, and talking to a pretend audience in the back seat is exactly the kind of thing he would do. Marianne playing along is also perfectly in character.

      I love this interpretation!! However, they look directly into the camera lens... Marianne also does this when Ferdinand asks her if she’d never leave him... undoubtedly foreshadowing what is to come & breaking the fourth wall simultaneously.
