I just discovered your channel and have been watching your backlog of videos. I am interested in many of the same topics. My thesis is that the natural arrangement of human society is groups of no more than 300. All of civilization is based on methods of forcing larger groups into unity of action.

That "Public Reckoning" at 3:45 got me thinking if it were possible to create such a system using digital ledgers. Not with a virtual value attributed to the goods and services but a form of digital barter, coffee for coffee, stone for stone.

13:25 honor is a net positive game if the transaction is successful. It can also be net negative if both parties are trying to get over on each other...

I'm confused. Why Sinbad instead of pirate ? Why the mix of eastern and european images ? Middle ages refers to european culture, no ? Christians and jews also disapprove of usury practice, no ?

In sorry, but "honour violence is necessary part of enforcing of contracts" is absolutely NOT what David Graeber is saying there.
The specific example from the section on "world of Islam" is creditor hiring a poet to tarnish the reputation of the debtor. This was only possible because for them the whole idea of market was not a zero sum game.
To sum up: David asks a question why Europeans couldn't do the same thing and the answer is because for Europeans fantasy of the market is rooted in the original sin, or its secular version known as central economic problem. Its completion for scarce resources versus mutual aid, the first one requres violence the second one features violence but doesn't require it to sustain the economy.

Another problem with the video is the notion the Qur'an forbids usury, it does not. Instead, it forbids economic exploitation. Thus, for about 300 years interest was charged in Muslim lands until al-Jassas said otherwise.
