    The 2 arc shaped slots in the back plastic are for inserting a tool (I use a U shaped wire) to move the brushes out of the way when inserting the rotor. You risk crushing them if not careful.

      When I could go to the local shop and buy one for 5.00 sure but they are all closed up. Now stuff has to be ordered and when idiots at the online shops don't listen to shipping requests to ship by post and they ship fed ex because they get a discount and then fed ex adds 37.50 in broker charges to a 5.00 motor it is not economical to do it. This was an easy enough fix. 9 out of 10 motors center be fixed like this.

    Lucky me so far have not had to take any motors apart yet. Just finished a Nak CR-3A and had to soak the cam switches over night in Deoxit to get good continuity. Keep up the good work, love your channel. I did score a Sony WA7ESA on ebay for 19 bucks and all it needed was new belts and pinch rollers. I did work on a DJ mixer from Canada many years ago and the gal really loved it and paid $100.00 US dollars for two switches it was made in Europe and the only parts distributor was in Quebec Canada, Duty charges are ridiculous.

      Not duty. Broker charges. Totally different thing. Private companies like fed ex have their own charges to fill out the paperwork. By post I have never paid s penny except when someone does the foolish thing like declaring a broken piece being sent for repair with some outrageous value. A Walkman is not worth 1000 but for the guy that thought it was, well he paid 175 in taxes to get it to me. It was a broken Walkman, it has a value of $0.00

      How are you going to get the back bearing that way?

    • @TechGrandson
      @TechGrandson 4 месяца назад +1

      Thus far I have not lubed from the back. I am only in my thirties, so the tape players I had as a kid were low quality, so my point of reference is small. But I would imagine an dual deck, hi-speed dubbing Onkyo, made in Japan in 1988/89 would be pretty quiet... I could clearly still hear the motor with the case open; its reasonable with it all assembled.
      Should I expect it to be very very quiet? I don't know what a reasonable amount of noise from the capstan motor is to know if its required to lube or not.
      I need some sort of plastic pry tool, the metal cap was directly on the circuit board and the noise was not worth the damage...@@12voltvids

    Great job!
    I completely follow your ideas about components replacement, even if shipping fees are somewhat lower in EU, parts for a 20 years deck are difficult to locate or quite expensive, even in top renowned brands. Most parts like motors or transformers have to be sourced in China with high transport (that's heavy stuff) and toll fees, and can easily be lost when not needing 1 month delivery time. You can sometimes resolve the trouble finding a similar machine on eBay for exchange parts, or buy a high end industrial equivalent, but this solution can also become a pain in the "budget". So when I encounter this kind of motor, I prefer your solution, a few minutes well spent. Some motors have the reputation of being much more tricky to disassemble, those with fragile nylon couplings or complex clutches, but that's finally always the same problem: find the assembling solution and reverse it, or find an alternate one, even partial, that gives you access to the failed or seized part.
    I've also saved a few transformers with failed thermal fuses or bad solders, and needs high voltage insulation tests... Plus, most transformers have specific or multiple output voltages, a nightmare if you need a supplementary medium voltage for fluorescent displays, or separate outputs for AD converters.
    I hope your new solution with audio rights will work best against these illegitimate claims! Even if you sing a Gregorian anthem in latin , there's always an escrow pretending he did it?

    That was really interesting to watch. Thanks! I really learned a lot. I was trying to record old cassettes with an old Sony Boom box given to me by a friend. It played one song, then kind of speed up the playback speed. I stopped the cassette and ejected it to see if the tape had been pulled, but that wasn't the case. Put the cassette back in and hit the play button, nothing works. No FF, No Rew, no Play. So I've been Googling what the problem could be and came to your channel. I'm not trained in electronics, but I do like taking things apart. So I'll try and see why the capstan is not rotating. The playhead engages, but I don't know why nothing is turning. The belt is still in place. I don't know if it is slack. Or maybe it just needs so cleaning.

    I fix a lot of fans as well, using a drop of oil into the sleeve bearing to get them lubricated again, and they ran for many more years. Also used to repair small fans, where you had to replace the 2 tiny bearings the fan ran on, and then assemble it again. Had to fix, as they were no longer made, and as source of the bearings we had a large collection of assorted synchro assemblies, from scrapped aircraft. Lots of gears for the current aircraft repairs, and all I needed was failed syncro units for the bearings, and the odd working one to grab new coil assemblies from to fix failed windings, so we were really frugal with the pile of scrap.

    Great video, smooth talking. I guess these simple decks have no issues with torque, i mean i have an expensive deck that has issues getting to the end of the tape. Wowow & flutter increases minute by minute, Just because it needs the torque spindle to be slightly slowed (Like a VCR) to keep tape at the right stress. Without it it eats tape as you well know. The power on the motor is sufficient for FF up to 98% of the tape. at the end it just struggles and struggles. The same motor RWD's perfectly. It's just that simple Y gear that turns left or right with RWD and FF. The left spindle has a tension regulation as i mentioned the right has none. So why have these simple decks no issues with this? It is a pioneer CT-339. It is a bit of a mystery, bought it for 9 euro's because it was malfunctioning. It turned out that these decks have a tiny plastic part that pushes all so slightly against the back of the left Spindle Gear. It was missing, that said it recorded fine but only on well cased cassettes from TDK or Maxell. These had strong tape regulation inside the cassette and the deck had no issues with those. Only wow-wow and flutter would increase slightly but noticeable at the end of the tape. I replaced belt, didn't work. Than i looked up the service-manual and it show no sign of a tension regulation in exploded view. I dismantled the mechanism so i could see inside at the back of the spindles and yes there was that tiny bracket that would house a tension regulator. Probably a ball inside a tube rolling against the back of the left spindle gear with a spring. I fabricated a simple plastic replacement and the deck records fine now with all tapes but with all the problems i already mentioned earlier. My guess is these decks are delivered from factory without this tension regulation part and hope for the best. Think about that, from Pioneer?

      You need a calibrated pre-recorded test tape and line output hook into a scope and all you have to do is hit play and then adjust capstan motor to match the correct frequency that was pre recorded on the tape pretty much. You can use BNC to RCA adapter for your scope. You can find the test tape all over eBay, or if you have a deck you trust that been recently overhaul and calibrated, you can use that to make your own test tape.

I managed to clean a lot of the tobacco stains out of the machine, but the motor would have sporadic speed changes when I tried to record or play. Would that be a similar issue to this machine you worked on? My guess is maybe some of that tobacco stain/tar got onto the spindle and is slowing it, but it might be FUBAR, as you say. Any thoughts?

      Isopropanol 99% to clean the capstan and pinch roller. The oil i use is 3 in 1 electric motor oil. This is virgin 20wt oil. Not the same as engine oil as that has detergent in it and corrosion inhibitors. Electric motor oil is pure oil nothing added.

    I know I’m a bit late but how would you repair the center motor. I have a similar cassette mechanism with dreadful w&f.

    Saw your work repairing that motor. Very nice. I have an Aiwa unit with 4 terminals on the motor. Trying to find out why it won't run the machine. 2 terminals will run the motor the other 2 don't Is that right? Why 4 terminals? Thanks!

    I'm troubleshooting a 12vdc capstan motor from a midistudio 644. The bearing turns smoothly and effortlessly. When I put 12v on the terminals there's no movement. It has 4 terminals, the cap has + and - stamped above the respective terminals. (EG-530KD-2B - 1600/ 3200 RPM)
    Do you think one of the other 2 terminals act as a trigger ? Cause I'm putting 12vdc and nothing's happening.

    Is there voltage regulation in addition to speed adjustment on that circuit board inside the motor?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад +1

      The speed adjust is just a voltage regulator. These are cheap motors. Even high end decks used them. My high end technics on the other hand has a direct drive quartz lock servo motor like a VCR used. Much more accurate.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 года назад

      Temporary fix for those bushes is to use a nail to gently tap a few dimples into the end faces, so that the material closes up the bush hole slightly, or just tap the faces to flatten them slightly, closing up the clearance causing the rumble. Otherwise find same size bushing and replace it, just has to be same shaft diameter and bush outer diameter. I have had some success turning the bush upside down, so the wear is on the other side that the old place the side tension was, or building up the gap with a sliver of solder.

    Same problem with many other decks, Aiwa, Sony, Nakamichi because the thing sits unused for years. I need the same 12V CCV 530 Mabuchi motor, but the original Japanese ones are not that easy to get. Did the same thing as you did but the W&F is very high and speed fluctuates. I only scream when I stub myself. You know there's a tool called hammer. F... brushes😤😬

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад

      My car doesn't need a tune up. It's brand new. Electric cars don't need much maintenance. My other one is almost 9 years old and the only maintenance that has had to be done to date is new tires. 160,000KM (100,000 miles) on the original brakes and still 80% wear left! Besides costing very little to run, there is the maintenance or non maintenance that has to be factored in.

    Having owned this since bought new KX300U, enjoyed watching you tear apart that elec. motor but gravity and a quality refined lubricant will accomplish the same result as I have done both motors on mine. I disagree with your analysis that this is all plastic, the entire chassis is metal, it's not a SANYO. You should done both motors, just a matter of time before other starts going bad.

    Hej, i have an amp of which the transformer starts to hum very loud after running for a while. It wont go away with disconnected secondary so the problem lays in the transformer itself. Any ideas how to silence it?

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 года назад +1

      If it gets very hot running disconnected you have an internal short, which is fatal. if it just hums and runs cool, then you can try to apply a coat or three of polyurethane varnish, preferably by heating the transformer to 100C in an oven set to cool (not hotter, as it will melt) and then dipping into the varnish till cool, and pulling out and leaving to dry for 2 days or so. The hot transformer will expand, and on cooling will pull the varnish into cavities, hopefully curing the hum. Works best with vacuum application of the varnish, but needs a vacuum pot and pump to pull air out under the varnish and then allow ambient air pressure on opening to push varnish into all the cavities. In any case the varnish needs to be fully covering the transformer.

      D-lab has a video on how he stopped transformer hum. Pretty novel.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад +2

      @@SeanBZA Was going to say the same thing. If it is humming when it is warm most likely one of the ferrous plates in the core is loose. Needs to be glued down again. On flyback transformers it was pretty common that the core wasn't sealed, and we would just use a varnish spray can and soak it completely and let it dry. 9 times out of 10 that stopped the squeal.

    It's so easy to damage the brushes on disassembly - not damaged here in this video, if someone is reading my comment BTW. ;o)
    Recently, I had a suspect 1979, 12v dc motor, for my Sansui SC-1330 cassette deck. Rather than open it up to see if the brushes/cummutator connection was 'dirty', I decided to squirt Servisol into the motor through a hole towards the brush/commutator section. Since then, then motor has been steady as a rock as far as speed stability is concerned. Not sure if Servisol is sold in the US or Canada?
    However, an old motor for my Aiwa AD-F770 did need replacing despite efforts to 'save' it. The replacement was a genuine Mabuchi CCW 2400rpm motor. See cassettedeckman.blogspot.com/2020/04/aiwa-ad-f770-capstan-motor-voltage.html

    I have a similar issue but for me the tapes play too fast. I have tried the speed adjustment, does nothing, tried cleaning capstan and heads, no change. I have to also manually start the motor. I will now replace the motor and that should fix. Let me know your thoughts or anyone in chat.
