I used to have a non contact voltage detector which had a red LED which came on if it got near a 120V wire. My kids used to use it as a Ghostbusters meter and go down in the basement to detect ghosts in the furnace, the washing machine and hiding in the walls. But they came running back up if they saw a spider.

The antenna on the side is probably for rf-signals. The metal plate in the front picks up LF- E-fiels by capacitive coupling, mainly 50 or 60 Hz. The inductor in the front picks up low frequency magnetic fields along it's axis. There is no way this works to measure e-fields and magnetic fields up to 3.5 GHz so I would not trust any of the other specifications either. These are probably mainly sold to people that are afraid of electromagnetic radiation but have no clue about how it works so they can claim anything.

Since Gauss and Tesla are both magnetic flux density units, that mG/uT my guess is that those are just alternate unit names and not a ratio.

Should have been "mG, uT" not "mG/uT", which would be a constant, "0.1" with no units.

Surprisingly, no one was interested. Nobody has knowledge on electromagnetic, electric and radio frequency fields? Everyone just jokes about ghosts.
The basis of the radio frequency detector is the AD8319 logarithmic detector chip or similar.
The choke is an antenna for electromagnetic radiation LF, the plate at the end is an antenna for the electric field ELF.
Side curved foil RF spectrum antenna RF Mode.
This needs to be studied, and laughter is not a sign of understanding the subject🙂

Might be interesting to use the meter to measure your ham rig's field strength around the exterior of your house. The FCC changed the rules in May 2021 deleting the low power/band exemptions and established the requirement that all hams must do a RF safety evaluation of their stations, both fixed and mobile. You can do that with online calculators but also allows for actual measurements in the controlled/uncontrolled areas.

I'm particularly interested in that last bit--plenty of DIY "your-best-guess" field strength meters out there, but I've never seen anything that might constitute "calibrated meter with calibrated antenna." But this might do?

God why do they randomly grind off all the chips. I can understand glob tops, but doing it after the fact? Unpopulated side looks like it goes with the unpopulated antenna. I was wondering if the manual says if it has some directionality to its signal detection? 🤣 at the LED lights, bane of every home lab that has a low noise project at some point

You had all those PCB antennas and you did not test this thing on any of those ...

I have doubts about the claimed frequency range. Would be interested to see it tested near a GHz source like a WiFi router

  • @Manf-ft6zk
    @Manf-ft6zk Год назад

It is really advertised as for home office: EMF protection and ghost hunting (maybe goats hunting) and you can have it in a set together with a "WiFi Router Cover Radiation Shielding". It seems even the supplier does not take it seriously.
One should check it for linearity and frequency range.

Great for individuals who have medical concerns-pace makers, defibrillator, etc. I would try a microwave, mains power, and utility pole. 73

You could use a 2 meter handheld and transmit to get RF. Transmitting semi close (low power) might register near field magnetic and electric fields.... That is, if that wide frequency range spec isn't only for the EM field ? Might be interesting ?

Are there any rf meters out there that would be accurate enough for the FCC mandate on rf exposure and that could measure down to at least the 80 meter band and that is also affordable?

    • @Merializer

Budget meters are helpful but not super accurate, it depends on the signal. I compared many.
