We originally produced this as a 4 part series for the ESPN website in the summer of 2015 but we're re-up'ing here with all parts together in case anyone missed it. Happy 51st birthday Rick!
Last year we visited Davenport, IA and shot an extensive interview with BMX legend and Standard co-founder Rick Moliterno. This 4 part mini-documentary series tells the story of Rick’s early beginnings, the founding of Standard Byke Company, a subsequent move to an in-house machine shop, a look at Rick’s current riding, thoughts on past and current team riders, what the future holds for Standard and much more.
Part 1: Moliterno discusses his rise through the pro ranks and the decision to start Standard Byke Co.
Part 2: Moliterno discusses the early innovations in BMX technology made through Standard Byke Co.
Part 3: Moliterno discusses his current relationship with riding, and enjoys a mini ramp session on his indoor ramp setup.
Part 4: Moliterno discusses what it takes to keep the Standard team going, and plans for the future with SBC.
Produced and edited by Chris Rye for ESPN/Props.

It is SO TRUE!!! I have been itching to get back on a BMX for some time now, but it has been a pain to get a bike. I stumbled across a beautiful TAO, and was able to close the deal. It is on the way to me now, and this video made me feel so good about my decision. I remember Molinterno when I was a kid. Now I can ride a bike built by a great guy. Thanks Rick!! 👊❤️

I've riden standard since 2000 with my blood red standard trails 250 i was in love with that bike and in 2005 i had it stolen from me and if anyone really owned a standard bike you remember the tag for warranty you filled out and sent back well i contacted standard bike co and i got a personal response from rick himself!! he researched my frame and helped me and wrote a letter to prove to my families home owners insurance what i owned so i could once again purchase a standard and ride again. ill never forget that ….rick you kick ass bud thanks for being a stand up business man and a true bmx legend

I've always considered Rick and Chris (S&M) heroes. They had a dream and followed it successfully. They should be an inspiration to any BMX rider.

I rode my sta 500 hard for 8 years until it was stolen. Standard is what inspired to learn to weld. Been a top of the line tig welder for 15 years now, just wish I kept up with the riding. I've always loved what this company stands for. Much love from the south of Boston.

I discovered Standard in may 1999 at Cycology bmx shop, in Sydney Australia. The owner Terry Bourke introduced me to the whole range of Standard frames, 125's, 250's etc. The colours were mesmerising, the geometry was amazing and they just looked totally sick. I rode most of those frames over the next couple of years. Terry told me all about Rick and Standard, rider owned and made in the U.S.A in of all places Iowa. I had returned to bmx just 3 months before after being away from it since 85. Because of that day, meeting Terry and learning about Standard i never stopped riding again. I had been skateboarding since 93, from that day in may 99 i never rode a skateboard again. I had returned to my first true love BMX. Later i became friends with Terry who was a good friend of Ricks and was the Australian distributor for Standard and still is to this day. He would tell me crazy stories about the standard compound when he went to stay at Ricks, the barn with the ramps and Rick and the standard crew getting loose with some crazy sessions. 18 years have passed since that first time at Cycology i still talk to Terry occasionally but we text regularly. To this day Terry still rides his black 125 from like 1999. He rode today actually.
Rick Moliterno you truly are a bmx legend. As a rider your skills are unbelievable, they always were, as a team manager your ability to spot and nurture real talent was pure genius, as a company owner/operator your integrity and commitment is above reproach and as a person, like the few who are truly talented or gifted being misunderstood or hated on comes with the territory but for me Rick you were and are still all class !!!
    STANDARD 4 LIFE !!!!!!!!!

Been a loyal Standard owner since the beginning with the 1992 Standard Shorty, then a 1996 Standard Tao Paul Osicka (my favorite flatlander of the 90s), then rode a Morales for a grip. Fast forward 20 years I just turned 46 and built up a sick 26" DJ . Went to the park with my kid. 20 minutes into it, I bailed and tore my ACL doing a freaking manual -- a freaking manual that I have done thousands of times before SMH... This is my second ACL injury and it may be time to keep both wheels planted on the ground... Not!

Had a gen 2 lengthy for quite a while in the mid 90s. Been riding mountain bikes for the last decade and miss my roots. Though I’m much older now and wouldn’t do the crazy shit I used to, I still have the urge to build another one. Might be time to give them a call and have a custom built made up for me..
