My “Lola” was a Manila Carnival entry as Miss Mandaluyong as a young lass. I remember seeing a postcard style picture of her dressed pompously and branded as Miss Mandaluyong. I was desperately trying to inquire about the photo from relatives to no avail. I am so sure that she was the one on the picture because of the prominent mole on the tip of her nose. I wish I could just dream about those times to experience it. It must be very enchanting.
Honestly Rabiya Mateo can use this documentation about Pura Villanueva as her inspired national costume. Since she’s an Ilongga and the first queen of Manila Carnival. So I think this would be a best winning piece for Rabiya.
Thanks, I-Witness for showing us this side of our history. This shows why beauty pageants are deeply embedded in our society, as well as the impact it made among us. ❤

See? Pura Villanueva is a Filipina-Spanish. It means, she's a halfie. This means to say that our beauty queens are already beauty and brains long time ago. As Filipinos we should really heald our heads up high. We are a smart, intelligent nation. Not to mention ibang iba tayo in Asia in so many great ways. Aside from that mas hamak naman talaga na mas may itsura tayo sa ibang lahi. I've been abroad for a long time and I always introduce myself by saying I'm a filipino followed by my name. Ayoko kasi napag kakamalan na taga ibang bansa. I get upset about it. That's why I'm always proud as a filipino.

If Manila Carnival already had participants from other countries since 1908, is it valid to say that it was possibly one (if not) the oldest global beauty pageant? If the Philippines was only able to sustain its glory, it could have been hosting the longest running global beauty pageant. Wow

She was born on 27th August, 1886 and passed away on 21st March, 1954 even before the first Filipina Miss International 1964 Gemma Cruz-Araneta and the first Filipina Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz were crowned.
Can you imagine ang pinakaunang reyna ng Pilipinas na si Pura is from Iloilo were Our miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo Lived! ❤️😍
wow :)
.
Woww 😍🤗🤗 grabe pala tayo noon. Hindi puro people power at rizal.
THAT IBALOY QUEEN FROM BENGUET THOUGH! 😍
PS. PIA WURTZBACH AS PURA KALAW! ANU NA, GMA FILMS???!! PWEDENG PWEDE SA MMFF. PUSH NYO NA ITEY!
Very Great docu sir Howie.. this is a great story of Madam Pura Villanueva Kalaw..i remember the time when I was grade two when my teacher said that it was during Manuel Quezon time signed a law allowing women to vote..I didnt know that it was Queen Pura's effort... i love also the comparison of Queen Pura to Queen Catriona..Queen Catriona have the guts to run for a senator so to have a more wider Voice in the Country and in the world and her advocacy more be heard and be a more Productive Queen not only in one year but all through out her time
#CatrionaGray

Bow to the researchers!
I love being an Ilongga and so proud of it.Iba talaga ang ilongga mabait, masipag, maganda at higit sa lahat puno ng kaalaman at hindi patitinag sa kinalalàgyan umaapaw ang mga biyaya natamong tagumpay sa larangan ng edukasÿon at prinsipyo na isinusulong kaya nga dapat saang gawain mo may isinusulong na adhikain sa ating bayan at sa mamayng pilipino ganyan kumilos ang mga Ilongga may sinabi sa salita at sa gawa.
Very informative documentary ! Because of this vid, As a pageant enthusiast I am now more knowledgeable about our history of Philippine Pageantry.
ang napag aralan ko palang eh yung sa Philippine history. not about this one. sooo thank you so much for this.

I witness and other GMA new program the best talaga. Mga researchers ang gagaling. They don't settle for less. No wonder its internationally awarded program. Great job!
Parang last year lang I stumbled upon a blog dedicated sa mga beauty queens from way back! As in. They where called carnival queen tapos in spanish pa yung mga sulat.
Grabe hindi talaga nasayang ang title niyang "First Queen" 😯
Ang galing-galing! 1908 pa pala meron na tayong beauty queen. Thank you sir howie, and your researchers...Great job! More stories like this.
I do appreciate that the current Miss Universe learned a lot about Philippine culture and history because many of us in the Filipino Diaspora are doing the same thing to feel connected to our roots.
Ganda talaga ng Pinay like kung agree kayo 💕
Madami din namang panget
Ganda tlaga puday
Depende sa taste mo
Iba talaga ang kalibre ng IWitness!! Superb documatation!!
i love documentaries 😍😍 lahat ng mga kasaysayan or even sa ibang mga status natin here sa Philippines binibigyan nila ng chance to know and learn all about . dito nakikita ko na yung bagong miss universe Philippines 2020 na si RABIYA MATEO na from ILO-ILO din gaya ng pinaka unang queen's. may ibubuga talaga din sya to be the MISS UNIVERSE 2020 in international pageant 😊🤩
After watching it I've applauded. This kind of narrative historical information has brings an enlightenment as to how far beyond our deeply rooted admiration for beauty pageant in the Philippines. This makes us all to be proud of our country.
wow napanood ko to last year..
and now binalikan ko to dahil ironically taga
Wow. Pura Villanueva, an Ilongga, is the first Carnival Queen. ❤
Wow! Nakakamangha through pageantry naipakita Ang karapatan ng Filipina thanks to Gng. Pura Villanueva-Kalaw
The best talaga ang GMA pagdating sa documentary. 👏👏
Beauty with a substance. Galing!
Kung pwede lang ibalik ang panahon♥️
Thank you GMA ❤️
Pura Villanueva inspired national costume for Miss Universe Ph 19, Gazini Ganados. Tribute na din para satin Unang Reyna. Agree??
i agree
Love the docu. made me proud that beauty contest in the country is not just about beauty. i do hope indegenous filipino will represent our country anx change the status quo.
Indeed a True Beauty Queen. Her advocacy for the women is still felt even up to this day!!! 💛💛💛
im so glad that gma made this. very educational and fun to watch...
"Philippines, still has more history deep inside the land of the pearl".. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Catriona is half Scottish actually although she was born in Australia. Her dad is a Scottish immigrant also.
The curator knows what he's doing. ❤
Designers of today must recreate their gowns as their memorials
See? Pura Villanueva is a Filipina-Spanish. It means, she's a halfie. #JustMyOpinion
may point.
Nakakaproud maging pinoy😁 sama ganitong istorya.
Here I am watching the First Miss Philippines, realizing that the newest crowned Miss Universe Philippines was also from Iloilo. Hmm "BASTA ILONGGA , GWAPA!!"❤❤❤❤
she deserve all the credits they should put her heroism in books in museums and all she done for para sa equality ng mga kababaihan ng bansa ng Pinas..the whple country deserve to know everything she does❤❤❤
9:02 kelangan ipreserve ang gnitong hairstyle.. keempee!!
Sana magkaroon ng series like Manila 1908 or Manila Carnival. This is a great venue to revisit our history, how pinay women were empowered during the American Times.
Anthology series na each episode about sa Manila Carnival Queen.
Basta dokumentaryo walang tatalo sa GMA magmula noon hanggang ngayon.
Proud Ilonggo here! Never thought that The First Queen of Philippines came from my beloved hometown. Kudos to #GMA #Iwitness team for these very important documentary. Another added to Philippines History!
As a social studies major, it is such an honor if, i could see those collections personally, a huge privilege if i will given a chance to have an interview and a conversation to those people involved in this video. It is our concern as a socstud majors, to be more connected and to extend our horizons in regards of Philippine History.
Shout out to our Senyor. Senyor Jhonil Bajado, soc.stud adviser, head of museum and archives, a professor in Samar State University.
See, noon pa man may advocacy ang mga beauty queens na Pinay😁
Something that is far from Latinas' and Americans' image of a beauty queen. Salamat Pura Villanueva-Kalaw.
If Manila Carnival already had participants from other countries since 1908, is it valid to say that it was possibly one (if not) the oldest global beauty pageant? If the Philippines was only able to sustain its glory, it could have been hosting the longest running global beauty pageant. Wow
That was pretty cool knowing she played a role in the rights of Filipino women to vote. 🎉
basta ilongga,,gwapa! proud ilongga here..
Bat naiiyak ako sa segment na to grabe... salamat pura villanueva 🥹🥹🥹 for standing with us for women's right.. ❤❤❤❤❤
