People stopped to use materia in day to day life is because since the founding of Shinra that invented electricity, or if you think about it, with all shinra mako reactors they basically distribute materia produce to people without giving access to materia.
Interesting theory! I don't think the game alludes to anything like that though.

If I may theorize it's possible that the materia created are expelled from the life stream by the planet as it finds things such as spells made for conflict unnecessary, pointless, and self destructive.

I greatly appreciate your perspective on alien and divine lifeforms or beings. Thank you for bringing up the unknowable perceptions. God's, extraterrestrial lifeforms, trying to understand their motivations would be like a cat or dog trying to understand physics on a human level and our motivations to understand it. Humans often forget that the only perspective we have to go off of is our own.

Another amazing video! Although I love JRPGs and have played them a lot, I'm pretty mediocre at them; and I remember the very first time playing FF7, I felt so overwhelmed by the materia system (and still kind of do lol). Thanks for really breaking it down in this video!

Yes, it’s zack in the nibelheim flashback and not cloud but it’s still implied that cloud had pre-emptive strike materia on him that helped him get the drop on sephiroth when sephiroth reunites with his mother 😅 this might be a clever rib and I’m taking the piss but I felt the need to discuss it. It’s likely in the flashback that cloud’s memories which are foggy are able to recall certain true details and is why Zack in his memories which he thinks is him does have pre-emptive strike materia, but he did have it on him at the time.

So I’m assuming that the really spiritual Central became Chocobos and moogles. While the everyday centra became the humanoid monsters.
Jenova made the black materia. She also did turn the cetra into monsters. But maybe some outside of the humanoid ones
we actually get to see some Cetra spirits in the temple of the Ancients. Those bearded robed dudes with the funny hats. It's unclear as to whether this is what they actually looked like though or if it is just their spirit form.

Yo, why you keep pronouncing "Mako" wrong? It's "mock-oh", not "make-oh". We've had official canon pronunciations for not just Mako but almost everything else for over a decade at this point, probably more like over two decades.
That's how we all pronounced it where I grew up! If you've seen my other videos you know I don't consider the extra-curricular ff7 works canon as I stated before the video started, thanks for watching!

Where I grew up (Southern England) we all call(ed) it that.
I don't know if the Japanese original word has meaning. But the spelling in English is exactly the same as the "Mako Shark", so in that case it makes perfect sense to pronounce it "Mayko" as you say.

If I may offer some irresponsible theorizing that strays from the point of the video, I always had the idea that The Planet was alive, but not conscious. It can make Weapons to respond to dangers, but they all seem aimless and none of them would have been equipped to stop Meteor despite all of their power. The Planet may well be alive, but healing the scar Sepiroth intended to make and creating the Weapons may have been more reflexive than intentional, meaning Materia like Meteor exist not through anyone or anything makind a deliberate decision and us just happenstance, like the other Materia. Kinda like how Nature is powerful in Princess Monoke but still vulnerable; dangerous to an extent, but still capable of being harmed by human actions.
On the other hand, Nature being incomprehensible and better left alone than understood is a big part of Japanese writing and Shinra aren't the only humans who hurt The Planet, so maybe the Weapons aren't as aimless as they seem. Anywhoozle, cool video!
You make some great points and i like your theories. I think gods or higher entities are inherently more compelling when they have a unknowableness/incomprehensibility about them akin to the way cosmic horror entities do.
@TheFirstLore True dat. They exist on a higher level than us and see problems and solutions that we aren't even aware of. Also adds even more tragedy to events if all of the apocalypses and cleansings we perceive as horrible aren't callous but actually justified (even if in a way we don't understand).
This video was quite enlightening. I understood how materia granted magic like fire, but never found it made sense that it would grant skills like stealing and countering. Now, I understand, that it is condensed knowledge. I don't think all materia is from the knowledge of ancients though- mostly magic and summons may come from them, but general skills may be from random humans. Things like HP UP and stat boosting, can just be general strengthening magic from the world itself. Actually summons can be similar to FF9- the crystal used the collective belief in certain myths and legends to give rise to summons. FF9 and FF7 shared similar planet being alive and memories and knowledge being preserved by the planet. I guess it is somewhat common in FF overall but big parts of FF7, FF9 and FF10.

Definitely a possibility. feel it would be a much shorter video though as there's less to go on as she's only a secondary protagonist. Might be a bit of break to do a shorter video though
I like to think that creatures performing acts that resembled magic like breathing fire were absorbed back into the lifestream and that knowledge of how they performed it was what got condensed into the Green Materia.

@@TheFirstLore I feel like it makes sense with the part where you mention humanoid enemies can perform Materia style magic whereas creatures like dragons just do it inherently, so that knowledge of how to perform it is also contained in the Materia so it looks and feels inherent.
