Final Fantasy 14 has a bit of a learning curve. It isn't exactly the hardest MMO out there by any stretch of the imagination, however it does very little to tell you anything about the game itself. And that's why mistakes are made. So seeing as Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail is on the way, lets help the new players out to avoid these mistakes and make there journey a bit easier.

do your Job Quest before anything else, even Main Story Quest. They unlock new skills, going into content with outdated skills, you do less damage, you arent able to keep up in healing either.

I'll read tooltips, forget what they do, reread, and then 30 minutes later, forget what they do again. My memory is like a goldfish. It's surprising I can play halfway decently at all... I'm just gonna chalk it up to muscle memory instead.
Mistakes I've made:
1) Spending too much gil on the same glamour pieces I forgot I purchased. Eventually learned that /isearch [item] was a thing to check if I've already bought the item before.
2) Buying the wrong gear. Going to the marketboard, looking at the latest gear available while leveling, let's say Bard, .. only to find out that I bought crafting/gatherer gear because it's still available as an "All Class" item.
3) Not checking the quantities of items before purchasing. I ... accidently bought 27 of the same Orchestrion Roll when I thought I was just getting 1 and wondering why I just lost all my gil. It's been a mission to slowly resell them to get my gil back.
4) Not cleaning out the Armory Chest/Leveling jobs of the same Role as evenly as possible. Every few levels I'd try to equip new gear and get the error message "Insufficient Armory Space" or something like that, then having to juggle with removing older gear just in order to upgrade my current set.
5) Not using the "Recommended Gear" button on the Character window. I wish I had known about this sooner, rather than spending 10-15 minutes just trying to make sure the gear I was wearing was as high as possible for my current level.
6) Retainer Inventory Management. Most players have 2, maybe 3 retainers because of the 2FA,... nah, I have 9! And sometimes it's just easier to dump extra stuff in my inventory onto the Retainers to clear up some space. But eventually Retainers run out of storage space too,.. so then it's another mission to go back and figure out what was worth selling on the marketboard, selling to vendors because they couldn't be sold on the marketboard, what could be desynthesized, and what I was ok with just discarding all together. A NIGHTMARE if you can imagine it.
7) Idle Crafting using Quick Synth. Yeah, it's good sometimes to just try to idle level crafters while I might be working on something else, but it was also easy to forget to go back to complete the crafter job quests and unlock some crucial abilities needed for HQ crafting at end content levels. This kinda falls in line with your "Complete MSQ" but for a different reason as you can't really Idle level MSQ, but same principle.
8) When stuck, check free resources: FFXIV community wiki and Eorzea Database from the official Lodestone helps point in the right direction for what is required to unlock certain side quests, where to find NPCs for such things, or what and where certain items are used for currency to get other items. During Bozja I knew I could unlock the gearsets, but I didn't know I had to wait to get the coins towards the 3rd zone, and it was making me frustrated not knowing until I eventually looked it up. These resources have also helped with other content, and I use them constantly instead of spending minutes, sometimes hours trying to figure it out.
9) Overcapping Materia Melds: A mistake but one easy enough to rectify. I didn't realize using lower level Materia was sometimes better when trying to squeeze out as much stats as possible from gear, mostly helping to save gil as well as a hint that maybe a different stat would be better than trying to just focus on only one.
10) Max Tomestones (Poetics, and (current) Comedy and Causality) It's bad to just let your tomestones cap out as there's a miss opportunity to purchase Materia, materials, and other items that can help make passive gil if all else such as gear is already purchased. Even to this day I struggle to remember to cash in on it, but I do so when I remember to. Capping Poetics will be useful just as we go into Dawntrail because that is how I'm going to be able to max out my gear for all classes, but it'd have to be one at a time, and still will have to wait for when the Augmented Crescent gear switches from Comedy to Poetics.

Oh lord the multiple glam purchases 😅 I have done that more times than I'd like to admit 😂 poetics have been capped for ages for me. I have nothing to use them on 😅😂 Well a collabs an idea. But by all means, do what your creativity desires

Mistake 9: You are not sexy enough

Making a video geared towards newbies and showing the final boss within the first 20 seconds was certainly a choice.
But I didn't know that was the final boss

Was doing a lv50 duty. The whm had me second guessing my ilv on my warrior because I was getting down to 100hp on two pack pulls. Looked at him casting. It was cure 1 😢😢

Really unsure why they don't just merge cure 1 and 2 together, cure 1 becomes useless once you get 2 other than for dungeons where 2 is unavailable...like attacks such as Dosis or Jolt get upgraded and downgraded accordingly, just do the same with healing spells like Cure 1 for the love of Hydaelyn.
