I never understood Mick Jagger's vocal approach until I saw an old video of The Stones performing with Muddy Waters. That immediately explained everything and, since I was already a big Muddy Waters fan, gave me a new appreciation for Jagger's voice.
This is Rock n Roll. By design and intent it isn't meant to be "perfect". Also this is 1966 era of live music technology. As you said; this is "nuanced" and I would add that this is nuanced in a way that literally defines what 60's rock and roll is striving to achieve. The fact that we are discussing this performance nearly six decades later is a testament to how definitive and formative The Rolling Stones are as a band. I wouldn't even consider myself a Rolling Stones fan but I definitely appreciate the mark that they made on music (and by extension, human) history. This is the definition of classic rock and roll.
My favorite interviews from the Sixties happened on their next tour. One of the reporters asked if the band was anymore satisfied and got one of the biggest laughs I've ever heard.
Top 10 greatest rock songs of all time, Taylor swift was singing satisfaction a while back and mick came on stage with her, he upstaged her , the comments on RUclips reflected that, I take nothing away from Taylor swift but I like rock and metal more , I believe mick was in his mid 70,s at the time , my favorite tune by the stones is can't you hear me knocking and my favorite album is sticky fingers, great reaction Beth, new york
Also worth noting is that this was the last truly live appearance by the Stones on Ed Sullivan. When they returned later that year, they used a prerecorded backing track for Mick and Keith to sing over. Never the same for live TV.
Although I understand how your followers may cast their votes for oftenthe most famous of each artists songs my simplevrequest is to give somenof the lesser known, yet still noteworthy tunes a chance too. Mostly thank you for your brilliant observations. Always fresh, sensitive, and often deeply moving. Good work!
When the Rolling Stones go back on tour next year in support of their new Hacknry Diamonds album, their sponsor is going to be AARP. 😂 Although, Metamucil, Geritol, and Depends would also have made great sponsors for the tour. 😂 Loved the reaction and analysis Beth, thank you. 🙏✌️
Have to admit I never really rated Jagger but on reflection; 1) he sang as well live (and in tune) as in the studio and 2) he had real stamina and his voice held up amazingly well for the duration of concerts and over the years generally (his singing and speaking voice never changed).
The record was deemed the greatest of all time by a large syndicate of Rock Stations on their 300 record countdown over an entire weekend! People don't realize how big this song was. These BAD BOYS of British rock totally eclipsed the Beatles during 1966, forcing them to reinvent themselves! The Stones led to everything in rock, from Grunge, Heavy Metal, Country Rock, L.A. and San Francisco rock, you name it!
Being slightly out of rhythm is common for the World's Greatest Rock Band. I believe it's called the Stones Wobble. Keith lays down the rhythm, drums (Charlie) is bit behind him, and the bass (Bill) is a bit ahead.
My mom had a hidden stash of rock albums. She had every rollong stones album. Dad would not allow any rock music in the house. She shared them with me and says my first words were "I can't get no !" I yelled it over and over. But even at 2 yrs. old I knew not to say those words when my dad was home from work. They divorced over a boy George album she accidentally left in a chair in the living room.
You can say he was not born with a great pipe, but he is a greatest singer. He can attract audience’s attention and affection. That’s more important. Otherwise the great opera singers would be the most popular singers in the world.
Re. monitor systems in this period: there were none. Nada. The Stones had their guitars, amps, drums and microphones, and that was it. Any screaming from the audience immediately made it difficult for them (or other bands of the period) to hear each other on stage. The ultimate example of this is The Beatles at Shea Stadium, using the stadium's PA to compete (in vain) with 50,000 screaming people, yet they managed to stay reasonably together. The Stones themselves didn't have a decent sound system with onstage monitors until their 1969 US tour.
The Stones were clearly not at home on the Ed Sullivan Show which offered a wide variety of musical and other acts to a huge American audience (from Opera to circus acts). Mick Jagger would have been one of the most raw and radical of musical performers to ever grace the Ed Sullivan stage.
Aside fromall their classic, iconic tunes I prefer the lesser know, not overplayed ones such as MelodyNo 5 fromBlack & Blue. That one wraps itself around you winding and sultry. Phenominal
This song was 'banned' because of its sexual explicitness. Well, we sixties kids took that ban for about 10 seconds. This song was the first 🇺🇸 hit for the band partly rebellion, partly..it's a great song. From one of their best albums 'Out of our Heads'...it definitely brought out the blues/rock genres developing into the Rolling Stones sound. Honestly...it was more than just sex.
WHO CARES - WHAT YOU THINK AND TALK ABOUT THIS SONG OR SONGS OF THIS KIND ! ? THIS IS FOR LISTENING AND FOR FEELING ! You was not living in this time - and you will NEVER - NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS ALL !
Eagles weren’t around in the mid 60s. Also, they are known for being notoriously boring live, even if they are pitch perfect. Stones really understood what makes a great performance. They were a sloppy mess live for most of the 60s. It wasn’t until PA came along and audiences started listening that they became known for their concerts. Early 70s is considered the golden age for live Stones. Although I personally prefer the lineup shown in your video at this particular point in time. 65-67 Stones is the best.
Beth, this is well known clip among Stones fans. Please note, Keith cuts in and out throughout the video. His fuzz pedal malfunctioned and he is trying to get it working and is distracted. That’s the timing issue. Please do a little more background research going forward.
When it first came out, it was catnip to my young ears. The girls screaming reminds me how much I hated it to the core. I disliked the Beatles eary on because of it.
You stop the song to talk too much. Let it play then go back in and break it down. I choose to watch because of the song and resent having constant interruptions.
Keith is the king of riffs, this song is so simple but the stones made a huge hit out of that riff.
Great reaction Beth
I never understood Mick Jagger's vocal approach until I saw an old video of The Stones performing with Muddy Waters. That immediately explained everything and, since I was already a big Muddy Waters fan, gave me a new appreciation for Jagger's voice.
Fantastic and historical video 😁. what a pleasant surprise 👍.
Mick is not a classic singer, he is a monster blues artist, and the quintessential rock singer. After all it’s only Rock and Roll but I like it.
Absolutely true
Mick always sounds good to me
So often you find the greatest little nuggets of music history!!!
Mick is not only one of the greatest performers, but underrated as a musician, check out the song Moonlight Mile, Give Me Shelter, or Wild Horses!!!
I saw what you did there. At 1.15, you inserted a pic of vocal anatomy, linking it to the clip you played. I really, really love that.
Happy birthday KEITH- Sweet little 80!❤❤❤

¡Simplemente lo mejor!
Saludos desde México Beth

Nice video. Waiting for tour in Argentina and Brazil again.
‘69 on Ya Ya’s with Mick Taylor is ‘off the charts’ Rock!

In the summer of 1965 this song often led the transition from the five minute news break back the music on rock stations.
Have to admit I never really rated Jagger but on reflection; 1) he sang as well live (and in tune) as in the studio and 2) he had real stamina and his voice held up amazingly well for the duration of concerts and over the years generally (his singing and speaking voice never changed).

“Totally eclipsed the Beatles in 66”
The Beatles released their greatest album Revolver that year and where still outselling the Stones.
The sync issues could also be the mixing tech of the time introducing slight delays from various inputs.
Being slightly out of rhythm is common for the World's Greatest Rock Band. I believe it's called the Stones Wobble. Keith lays down the rhythm, drums (Charlie) is bit behind him, and the bass (Bill) is a bit ahead.
need to watch the 1969 tour version of them doing this song- the sound / technology really changed by 69
Listen to Mick on the latest stones album just this year he’s 79 and sounds unbelievable

After dad left we played any genre of music we wanted to!

It is a common theme that the most popular songs and artists often get crap for not being technical enough. Might be a lesson there.
2 suggestions for great Singers of that area: Steve Marriott, either with The Smallfaces or Humble Pie or Rod Stewart with the Faces.
Im waiting for their final tour, The Wheelchair Tour with Mick jumping around on stage with a walker and Keith in a hospital bed with his guitar!
81 still rocking…you are making cliched statements
Keith Richards turned 80 on the 18th and he also celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary the same day. Married Patricia Hansen..

I saw them in '65, '66, and '72 when the Stones stood for something more than a corporate logo...

At least you can hear the live performance.

You should really do IDLES - The Beachland Ballroom - the from the basement session
Great cathartic vocals
Raw Deal
Keith Richards said Otis Redding got this song right - exactly as Keith imagined it in his head.
Olhe a holy mountains system of a down 🤘
I would like to hear your vocal analysis of Billie Eilish singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on Saturday Night Live.
Even back then a lot of TV shows had singers lip sync, had studio versions of songs.

Ed Sullivan was live TV, One shot only.
Brian Jones!!!!
What Keith means with his song .

RIP Brian Jones
today is Keith Richards birthday
I guarantee the girls who were in the audience, would still scream like that, today!
So what like seeing your grandmother sreaming at Mick
Keith Richards started this song as a blues song.
Can you please react to daneliya tuleshova agt❤️
When Brian Jones was in the band they were on the top of their game at the start but he lost his way and Mick and Keef took it to another level ..
I actually prefer the Otis redding version of this. As amazing as the original is.
OMG, now you need to contrast with Devo’s version!!!
darn.
No one can hear my comments anyhow so I am unsure what to think.
Fuck it.
Obviously, this is a truly live performance, unlike the programmed garbage of today!
The Eagles were 10 years later - not really the same era.
Ok

Not everyone's going to deep dive into every single clip they use that's a big ask especially if their doing multiple vids a week
A subtle song about sex
Keith has been dead for the last 15 years, they have him stuffed and a puppet master controlling him on stage.
When it first came out, it was catnip to my young ears. The girls screaming reminds me how much I hated it to the core. I disliked the Beatles eary on because of it.
mick jagger murdered brian jones
You stop the song to talk too much. Let it play then go back in and break it down. I choose to watch because of the song and resent having constant interruptions.
if you are just after the song - the original is linked in the video description
Ok
