I am so glad that you brought this up! After I took a CPR/First Aid class, I searched RUclips for videos of real CPR and saw the episode involving a man in the UK named Chris Solomon, who had the incredible fortune of going into cardiac arrest while in the company of his coworkers, who were EMTs. While they were doing compressions, Solomon bolted up and started lifting his arms. At that point, if I had been the one doing compressions, I'd have stopped, thinking he had regained consciousness. But he was not back! He was still dead and the EMTs knew it and kept going with the CPR, eventually saving his life. It's awesome and awful to glimpse the tenuity of the line between life and death.

I'm a first aid instructor and I really love that video. He's having a seizure due to hypoxia, but a mild enough seizure to not endanger the colleagues as they provide CPR, so they keep going.
It shows how you always have to think for yourself and adapt. It's why, personally, I think understanding the basic mechanics behind what you're doing is as important as knowing algorithms and such. People really should learn some basic anatomy beyond what you can teach in a first aid class. It's great to see so many people watching videos like this to educate themselves further.
In the case of Chris, the correct course of action is logical, but violates some rules that you may have internalized.
1st rule: CPR is done on people who are limp and lifeless. --- Well, yes. Unless they aren't because they have a hypoxia-induced seizure.
2nd rule: Don't touch a patient who is having a seizure. --- Except in the case of Chris, you should, because he isn't moving wildly and doesn't have enough strength left to pose a threat, but needs CPR.
I like to use that video as an example for how rules alone aren't enough, some situational awareness is just as important.
One of the big problems with CPR is that many people think "I perform CPR when a patient is not breathing". That's not right. CPR is performed when a patient is not breathing _effectively_, which means things such as agonal respirations still require CPR.

OMG - this is painful to watch. At the same time this made me laugh because we had a similar incident where our 8 yo daughter knocked the wind out of her father with an elbow and he went to the ground and rolled onto his back to recover. My daughter promptly gave him a legit rescue breath and he pushed her away. It may be time for me to take her to a class or to give her some more instruction myself. She’s only seen CPR on the movie Sandlot (when a kid is pretending to be in need of CPR so the cute lifeguard will rescue him with mouth to mouth). My husband said he thought his lungs were going to explode. LOL! My 8 yr old is very small, but healthy - she weighs about 45 pounds. I was kind of proud of her for accidentally dropping her daddy and then the fact that she TRIED to act in what she thought was an emergency. I’m not sure she’s ever had the wind knocked out of her yet.

@Skinnymedic ~ First i'd like to say great video, it is funny in a way to watch this video. I myself am an EMR/First Responder and current EMT student and i have been told just like you mentioned that while doing good compressions that a patient will regain conciousness and nearly be alert and that's just what i seen in this video, and once he stopped doing compressions he then lost consciousness until he went back to doing them again. I don't know that's just my take on this!

SkinnyMedic I think you are right in this first clip, the fact he's still moving when he stops compressions would suggest there's some form of life maintaining cardiac activity. Could it be he was in a shockable rhythm but pulsed?

Hey skinny, I saw your video on your water well. That’s what I do for a living, and just for some advice, sometimes ants will crawl around near the pressure switch and they can be pinched between the contacts and prevent power from turning the pump on and you’ll be out of water. So, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to spread some insect dust or whatever around (not on) the pressure switch or the pump house! Just some small advice!
