It’s funny, but I’ve been listening to self-proclaimed experts and amateurs diss 1911’s and 1911 owners since the mid-1980’s, and I’m sure that wasn’t the start. Lately, I’ve been reading some young jerks condescendingly explain to people they do not know and who have decades more experience why they’re wrong to carry 1911’s - somewhere in the comment the young jerk will invariably drop the epithet “boomer” (more arrogance mixed with stupidity - I’m Gen X). But there are numerous companies cranking out 1911’s - some over $5000 new - with no end in sight. In another 30 years, if firearms ownership is still legal, I’m sure companies will still be making 1911s - and most of today’s “modern” guns will be long out of production, forgotten, and without any supply of spare parts.

Here we are with another ammo shortage, and once again, the maxim "9mm is a much more popular round, so it will always be easier to find ammo." is being disproved. If a cartridge is ten times as popular, you will have ten times the people who are scrambling to get it during a shortage. There are no absolutes. Sometimes a nine sometimes a 45. You don’t clear a room with a 240g. We are not “allowed” to use defensive rounds in the military, only FMJ. We used our 1911s for direct action and our M9s for long camping trips, if it comes down to using your pistol, your just buying time. Mark your pos, and let the fixed wingers cremate you.
I’m retired in a small town that’s mostly former military and carry a commander 1911, but when I go outside of here, it’s my g19.
As for ammo, only pogs were caught with their trousers down. I had enough to pass out to buddies and sell 5k to idiots willing to pay .50 a rd for 9mm and .75 for 556.

Typically very reliable out of the box and Springfield's customer service is second to none. My Mil-Spec was 100% until the extractor failed, though, which took only 1,000 rounds. SA keeps the prices down by using substandard (MIM) small parts. I think I also have a two-piece barrel. These work great until they don't. Just something to keep in mind.
I switched to Colt and wouldn't look back: purchase price is slightly higher, but factoring in the parts quality you win AND own a Colt. Plus they don't deviate too much from JMB's blueprints. My 15 year-old Springfield has a frame that's slightly different and not as ergonomic, larger in the handle and dust cover, kinda like the Filipino 1911s. I still love this gun and the fact that SA doesn't do firing pin safeties.

@John Baugh: I had a similar experience; when I was commissioned in the late-1960’s the 1911A1 was DoD’s principal sidearm, however, by the time I retired twenty years later the M9 had largely replace it. Further, I can’t imagine why others posted such garbage.
I’m not criticizing the 92/M9 or the 9x19mm round, but - as a matter of personal preference - I too prefer (and I still own several) 1911A1s in .45 ACP, primarily due I suspect to the crisp, light, single action trigger design.

Back when I was a bit younger Jeff Cooper was my gun hero, the first handgun I bought (when I turned 21) was a Colt 1911 45. While today I carry a Glock model 22 I still have a 1911 Springfield 45, this old gun has always been 100% reliable ( I believe it's because it's so loose) I had a Kimber 1911 that would sometimes jam with factory ball ammo, I sold the Kimber.

Sadly, I'm hearing this about kimbers lack of reliability more and more lately. I attended Gunsite When it was still run by Jeff Cooper. He was a rational, logical man who managed to disseminate lots of firearms info, all without a beard :)

My opinion of Cooper's teaching is that the men should have shut up about rifles circa 1960 and pistols circa 1980. Here's what I wrote about him elsewhere
"I don’t care much for what Jeff Cooper has to say about it. The man was a sport shooter and writer far more than a doer. Don’t forget that he thought it impossible for women to make good cops, said 9×19 was pointless, considered the DA/SA and DAO wonder 9’s and plastic fantastics with strikers and polymer and double digit magazine capacities to be a fad, poopoo’d SCHV and fire superiority tactics, pushed for an ultralight high caliber bolt action “scout rifle” in the era of semiautomatics, said that there is no policing use for rifles other than hostage rescue sniping, pushed a combat shooting style which performed noticeably worse than those of Fairbarn, Applegate, and Weaver, took pride in being opinionated and ignorant and arrogant, and was a POG who was always quite evasive about his actual combat experiences, of which he had at most two. His opinions and conclusions seldom matched those of men like Fairbarn and Cirillo, both of whom wrote that just having a gun in something other than a pocket caliber would make even a moderately practiced shooter good to go. Fairbarn especially saw hundreds of fights personally, knew of thousands, and had great experience and respect for calibers Jeff would have derided such as 7.63×25 (not a typo), 38spc, and 9×19. He also boasted of badass feats, like explaining one time to black children outside a store, that he'd shoot them if he didn't stop asking him for money. For these reasons, I consider Jeff Cooper to be more of a James Yeager figure than a Travis Haley figure, if that makes sense."

The Colt Government 1911 was one of my first handguns, and it worked just fine, all you need is good magazines and the good old ball ammo.
