    You can plant something that the deer don't like in front of the roses. Something like allium, euphorbia, russian sage, foxgloves or whatever you like. Anything highly scented or poisonous will help keep them away.
    I just discovered your channel, I love how much you love your garden; someone after my own heart!

    Oh, I wanted to tell you that we were advised to plant purple catmint flowers in front of the roses or purple allium (chives) and that will keep the deer away because they don’t like the smell. It worked for Us and we have no problem with the deer trying to eat the roses. The purple catmint looks so pretty in front of the roses also.

    Olga, beautiful garden - your design of it seems perfect. The deer are doing their own design, which also looks great - a happy accident. The house painting is a day brightener. I wish more people would do it as well as you. Thanks for the informative and engaging videos.

    Kia ora from New Zealand Olga! What a delightful garden you have. I've watched a few of your videos and I appreciate the educational content - particularly on the roses. I am creating a new garden on my property and in the last 2 months have planted 6 bare-root roses; 3 x climbers and 3 x bush roses. I just adore the flower paintings on your house - just lovely! Your hydrangeas are all so healthy looking. Here where I live in NZ they grow wild on the sides of the roads and this year I have taken cuttings from them. I was thrilled to see your Shasta daisies - I have just purchased seeds and will scatter them come spring. I have subscribed and am looking forward to many more videos. Take care.

      How wonderful! I am jealous of your happy multitude of berry bushes! I have to be careful with space, otherwise we will be living in jungles. And enjoy your rose, it is a good one. I am contemplating to plant 3 more of them at the front of my house next year! Gardening is good!

  • @willowmarie4980

    I just found your channel and watched two of your videos about the lady of shallot roses. I have three lady of shallot bushes that I planted 4 years ago. They just finished their first flowering and we fed then already with the David Austin rose food. I do deadhead the fading blooms but wasn’t sure how far back to trim the canes. Some of them are very tall and are growing against our deck, which looks nice but I will probably cut them back like you showed in your video so they look more like shrubs. Thank you for showing how to cut them back so they look neater. I also have some David Austin pink rose bushes in another part of my garden and they are being destroyed by black spot disease. Some videos on RUclips by other gardeners say to take all the leaves off that have black spot, including the ones that fall on the ground underneath the bush. I have been doing that but I don’t want to defoliate the whole bush! I had to pull so many leaves off that they are looking very spindly. So now I have been pulling off the leaves that are turned yellow and leaving on some of the other green leaves that have black spots on them. Do you have any advice on what I should do about the black spot? I noticed all of your leaves look very healthy and green. My husband went out and sprayed the bushes with an insecticide that was recommended by David Austin website. So far, the black spot has stayed over on that side of the garden and has not spread to the lady of shallot roses. I am afraid that it will spread over to them because supposedly it’s carried in the wind. We have had a lot of rain here recently which I’m afraid it’s going to spread the disease further. I would appreciate any advice you might have. Thank you

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  3 года назад +1

      Some of David Austin roses are more resistant to black spot than others. In your case I would recommend to have a more “aggressive” spraying schedule, since disease is established already in your garden. I would spray up to 5 times a year, you can use herbicide recommended by D. Osten. Please keep in mind, pesticide is for “pests”, insects; herbicides- for diseases. You can spray as needed, and start early next year, as leaves come up. Happy gardening!

    Hi olga.. I was watching this video and I have a question.. how does the peony in the front garden flower for you under that tree?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  2 года назад

      They need a lot of maintenance, since we didn't think and planted very hungry and thirsty maple trees there. I know that the situation will become worth with time and my peonies probably would need to be moved. But for now, with watering and feeding they are doing fine and blossom well.

    Beautiful hydrangeas! May I know the types of these hydrangeas? Are they bloom on old stems or new stems? I am in zone 5, many hydrangeas don’t bloom😌 Thank you 🙏 and keep posting videos!

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  3 года назад +3

      Hi Indie,
      My hydrangeas are Bigleaf Hydrangeas. They are hardy to zone 5 and are growing in the front of my house near the road and receive a lot of cold winds in winter. Sometimes, when there is a strong drop in temperature at the end of winter, and winds are present, all the top flower buds are killed. Hence no blooms for me. We had mild winter this year and my hydrangeas are doing great!
      The reason you don't have blooms can be either zone you live in, or you do late fall or early spring pruning and cut all future flower buds. These hydrangeas bloom on old wood. How about trying Smooth Hydrangeas, they are native to north America and bloom on old and new wood... Happy gardening!
