  • This video is from Oshkosh 2017 when they offered to let me ride along in the jump seat of a DC3. I was very excited at the opportunity, strapped myself in, plugged in the headset, and then realized that my friend FlightChops was going to be the one flying the whole flight including the landing! And remember, he is a private pilot and has never flown a DC3. My excitement quickly turned to Fear. The flight was a lot of fun but I was very relieved when the flight was finished and we didn't make the Oshkosh highlight reel....or did we? To see the whole flight be sure to go over to FlightChops channel on RUclips.
Thanks to Gold Seal for inviting me along for the ride! www.onlinegroun...

Gotta give flight chops credit. He tries to fly any and every plane he can. Not saying it looks perfect but it sure looks fun. Never a dull moment.

I was an aircraft electrician at Otis ANGB for many years in the Air Guard and in '69 we had a C-47 that I worked on. Working on the engine wiring was pretty messy with an oil smell that you'll never forget. Our Wing Commander, Maj. General Charles Sweeney flew it a lot. FYI, Gen. Sweeney flew the B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki that ultimately led to the end of WW II. Cape Air out of Hyannis flew these for a long time with a regular schedule to Boston Logan. Love the video and the sound of the engine cranking up. Brings back a lot of good memories!

Love it! Here in Long Beach, CA, we had 2 of these beautiful machines in almost daily service... Taking off from the Long Beach airport to ferry cargo and mail to Catalina Island. They were retired just three months ago, replaced with Caravans. I'll miss the sound of those wonderful radials as they climbed out towards the island. :(

    Brings back memories
    Flew a DC3 in 65 and 66
Thirty years later as a Capt on 767 i had the opportunity to sit in a 3 again and flew it for over an hour. I was amazed how it all came back.
The 767 was a beautiful airplane butI still love the DC3

As a kid in the 1950's I remember taking trips with my parents on American Airline DC3's, specially the night I saw flames coming out of one of the engines. That was a little scary. That’s all I remember from that night flight. It’s amazing these things are still out there and flying today. I wonder how many are still in service.

I watched the video first on FlightChops. Interesting to see the same flight from your perspective. I read some history on this particular DC3. At one point it was in service for Ozark airlines. I flew on DC3s when I was a kid. One flight was with Ozark. Blows my mind that this could be the very airplane I was on. I couldn't help but laugh at the humor, albeit, a little nervous. Chops did a fine job piloting, landing included. Way to go. You two guys are something else. Great video as always Steveo !

I love the DC3. When I was in Canada going fly fishing I flew on a Buffalo Airlines DC3. I had missed my original flight out of the states so I got up a day later than my buddies. So I was the only passenger on board. They let me sit in the jump seat from preflight to postflight. I was fascinated. Since then, I have not even seen one, but if I ever get the chance, I will be on one again.

Great albeit short video. I flew in a DC-3 when they were still in service and I'll never forget the flame coming out of the exhaust as seen on a night flight! We flew from Harrisburg, PA to Pittsburgh and then boarded a Boeing 707 which was a brand new aircraft at the time. It was nonstop from Pittsburg to San Francisco with only six paying passengers on board. With so few people on board to mask the creaking and cracking sounds it made, I was afraid it was going to break up in flight! In those days the stewardess were all female and very good looking!

Interesting to watch Flight chops video of the same event. Saw you in the background so I know a video from you was coming. Can't believe that a plane taxied behind the DC 3 during run up. It puts out some wind. Amazing how this plane can float down a runway and make a landing look difficult. I remember quite a few bouncing landings sitting in the jump seat. ATP candidate would get a ration from the CFI about how old the aircraft is and to treat it gently. lol :)

Now you can fly TBM's, and other beauties, but those guys where pioneers they risked all. They died so you and I can fly the wonder planes we flight today.

Should have said... "I've seen many FlightChops videos, which is why I've never wanted to be a part of one...". :) J/K Chops..

Your "escape hatch" is the mail door where the mail was loaded.

I thought that the cockpit door was kept closed to keep terrorists out, but now I know that its so that you don't see the pilot patting the co-pilot on the back and saying good luck before the landing!

You seemed just a tad nervious Steve? Actually I don't blame you with such an antiquated aeroplane!!You all walked away from a DC3 Flightchops landing though - or was it landings? Gr8 video man.

Hey man, I hope you, your friends and family all made it through the hurricane without a problem. I love your videos! if you're ever in the PNW, give me a shout! Watching your videos and seeing the things you get to do has pushed me to chase my dream of earning a living by flying planes. You're a great inspiration of mine!

At the first wheel touchdown he should have pushed forward instantly to pin it. Once that bouncing thing gets started it can get worse at every bounce until disaster strikes. I flew those things in the 70's about 2500 hours worth. Good plane to get an ATP in. Then you have your company check airman in the right seat instead of the FAA. And it's systems are fairly simple. So the oral isn't too bad. The ATP ride can double as a type rating ride also.

Man that low right turn after take off with both of them looking a little sketchy on the throttles would have had me changing my pants after.
