Drach, since this vid is on the Delaware River, do you plan to do a video on the actions of the Royal Navy on the Delaware during the American War for Independence? I'm thinking of the explosion of HMS Augusta in 1777 in particular, when the American river fortifications were being contested.

What are some of the oddest discoveries when a ship has gone to the breakers or is being refurbished? I imagine there are quite a few "Mike was here" bits of graffiti from the original builders, but I can imagine some may have gotten a bit more creative.

I’m not sure if it’s the same thing but I used to have acrophobia really bad. While I never completely got over it, it helped to visit a friend who worked at a coal power plant on the 30th floor. The elevator (similar to the ones you’d see on construction sites) looked about as rickety as you can imagine and when you step out it’s all expanded metal for the catwalks. That lets you see straight down all the way down the ground level. Let’s just say that helped a lot.

It takes some real stones to overcome something that is not only inherently somewhat dangerous, but something that one has a phobia of. (I personally don't have phobias that I am aware of, but, as a former ski and climbing instructor, I've seen many students with such, and can appreciate just how scary they can be!)
Also, admitting to being scared can be even harder. I salute people that can do so and confront their fears, even though such may seem irrational to non-sufferers.
      Anyway, Cheers!
P.S. Actually I think I may have a (mild) phobia of riding in a vehicle with someone who I do not know in control. Cabs, small planes, etc make me tense up, and it's hard to sit still without offering unnecessary advice. Is that a phobia, or just a control thing? (Also, the number one phobia is, apparently, public speaking. I don't understand that at all!)

Hi Drach, i was on the USS RANGER at the end of her life before her 93' decommissioning. If you think what you did gave you vertigo how about this. In order to get your mast climbers certificate, you must climb up to the yard arm and walk out to both ends, then climb to the top and scratch your initials in the top. Check out pictures of the Ranger from that time frame and take measurements to see how high i had to go to get that certification. I did that while in dry dock in Long Beach CA in 89'.

Train story: I once carpooled with an air quality inspector who became famous for a similar incident. He was inspecting facilities in the port area and stopped his vehicle to check his map for direction. Unbeknownst to him, he had parked straddling the train tracks, and while consulting his map the train came along and made a low-speed, 2-3 mph, impact with his vehicle. He was not yelled at by four supervisors into a fetal position, and the last I checked was now a supervising inspector himself.

I had a similar experience. Working 3rd shift at a previous job, I stopped to check a map when a light turned on about 100 ft away. The road was so rough that I didn't realize that I had stopped on a rail crossing. I quickly stepped on the gas and got out of there. I found a rail free spot a little bit more along the road and finished checking the map. I had to go back the way I came, and the train hadn't moved. I think the crew was having a little fun with me.

Hell yeah brother you should be proud of yourself. We all know fear but only the brave can muster the courage to shake hands and walk with it.

Kudos to you Drach for making that climb. You can hear the nervousness in the laughs while you are up there.

Drach talking about heights and vertigo... I'm six minutes in and my stomach is turning. I'm gonna hit "like" now because I might not get too much farther into it.

Your tour took me back to my ship, USS Proteus AS-19, I was on her when she decommissioned in 1992. She was about the same age but with a lot more active years tending to the Polaris missile subs. She had a lot of store rooms and voids too. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Unless it’s grated steel it helps to see we’re you’re going, then stare at the floor as you walk to where you’re going. Unless it’s a clear floor, the sky walk in the Willis tower in Chicago taught me that. Focused on the phone intently to take that picture and got the hell out of there

6:01 Those pipes are boiler vents and superheater vents. Blowdowns are a different component and serve different purposes and they discharge below water line.

The things you do for us... I was lucky enough to climb as high as I could in the fire control tower of Missouri in 2012. Unfortunately the outdoor platform was closed for maintenance. But I did get to see the main director station and look through the range finder.

Vertigo can be cured! All you need to do is repeatedly expose yourself to heights - really simple in theory, but from own experience I can say it absolutely works.
Now, having an interesting reason to do so is another thing. If only you had daily access to a battleship... 😅

Thank you for doing that. that radar on top of the fire control is the Mk 13, which when the Iowa's were in service was possibly the oldest operating, in service radar anywhere.

I used to live less than a mile from the USS New Jersey in Philadelphia city proper, and one of the things I miss most about the it is this fine ship and its incredible museum. The curatorial staff is incredibly professional and the areas open to the public on the ship are absolutely immense.
